Chapter 12: Have You Forgotten What Method She Used to Marry You?
Upon hearing this, Madam Song looked at Jiang Wan with a troubled expression. “Wan Wan.”
She clearly wanted to give Jiang Wan a chance to explain, but this made Shen Qian furious. She never expected that, in just a single day, Jiang Wan had already gained Madam Song’s trust!
“Mother, Zhi grass can indeed stop bleeding.”
Jiang Wan gave Shen Qian a half-smiling glance. “I never knew you understood me so well. You even know whether or not I’ve read medical books at home.”
“You…”
Shen Qian’s face turned red from anger. “Sister-in-law, I’m doing this for you and Big Brother. After all, some medicines cannot be taken recklessly. If something happens to Big Brother, you’ll regret it too late!”
She reprimanded Jiang Wan sternly, as though Jiang Wan was some malicious woman. Immediately, Song Jiuchi and Song Jiuli gave Jiang Wan accusatory glares.
Jiang Wan ignored her and instead turned to look directly at Song Jiuyuan. “Husband, do you trust me?”
The medicine was for Song Jiuyuan. She didn’t care whether others trusted her, but if Song Jiuyuan didn’t trust her, then it was pointless.
Song Jiuyuan met Jiang Wan’s indifferent gaze and suddenly understood her thoughts. He then spoke softly:
“I trust you.”
“Big Brother, have you forgotten what method she used to marry you?”
Song Jiuli was nearly enraged to death. Someone like Jiang Wan didn’t deserve her Big Brother!
If it hadn’t been for her insistence, they would never have been exiled like this. Shen Qian’s words had still managed to get through to Song Jiuli’s heart.
“Don’t bring up the past.”
Mentioning the past made Song Jiuyuan’s face darken, clearly recalling a bad memory, causing a heavy feeling in his chest.
Song Jiuli opened her mouth as if to say something but was abruptly interrupted by a loud scream.
Ah!
All attention was immediately drawn to the source of the scream. Jiang Wan jogged over and saw a government officer lying on the ground, his body in front of a snake that had been chopped in half.
He had clearly been bitten by the snake, and the others were too frightened to approach, fearing they too might be bitten. Another officer, Old Zhang, urgently shouted:
“Chief, Little Deng was bitten by a venomous snake!”
Ren Bang, who was walking ahead, still needed some time to reach them. Jiang Wan, holding the Zhi grass, knelt down quickly and said anxiously:
“I have studied medicine. I can help him.”
Saying this, she tore off a small piece of cloth from her rough homespun clothing and swiftly tied it around Little Deng’s bitten leg to prevent the toxin from spreading.
Seeing her skilled movements, Old Zhang let out a relieved sigh and discreetly made way for Jiang Wan. After all, as someone who had been exiled, she shouldn’t dare to play tricks.
Jiang Wan poured some water from her water pouch onto the bite wound. The water had been mixed with spring water, and soon, the blood flowing from the wound turned from black to red.
She then quickly crushed the Zhi grass and applied it to the wound, before wrapping it up with more cloth.
Just as she finished, Ren Bang finally arrived. Shen Qian, with a quick glance, immediately shouted:
“Sir, my sister-in-law is very strong-willed. Although she doesn’t know much about medicine, she’s acting out of good intentions. If something happens to this officer, please don’t blame her.”
Her words were tinged with sarcasm, and Jiang Wan felt her fists clench.
To make matters worse, Madam Song added fuel to the fire. “Jiang Wan, you shouldn’t joke with someone’s life just to make a name for yourself.”
“Shut up!”
Jiang Wan gritted her teeth, barely restraining herself from striking her, but Ren Bang was present.
“What have you done?”
Instead of blaming Jiang Wan as Shen Qian had expected, Ren Bang crouched down and untied the bandages on Little Deng’s leg. Jiang Wan explained:
“I first tied his leg to stop the poison from spreading, then cleaned the wound with water, and applied Zhi grass. If we give him some Zhi grass orally later, he should be fine.”
At that moment, Ren Bang saw the treatment Jiang Wan had given, and a hint of admiration appeared in his eyes. He was well-versed in urgent medical procedures from years of traveling this road, and he could tell that Jiang Wan had done everything correctly.
“Chief, am I… going to die?”
Little Deng was a rookie, the first time traveling this route. He was young and now felt faint, terrified out of his wits.
Ren Bang patted his shoulder and grinned brightly. “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine. This young lady handled it well.”
His words, which essentially approved of Jiang Wan’s treatment, stunned everyone.
“So she really knows medicine.”
“Too bad. No matter how skilled she is, she’s still going to be exiled with us.”
“Sigh, having a skill is better than nothing. Look, she helped the officer, and these officers will surely show her more leniency.”
“…”
“Thank you!”
Little Deng quickly thanked Jiang Wan, his eyes reddening in sincerity. It turned out even the tough government officers could have sensitive moments.
Shen Qian was so angry she broke her own fingernail, and Madam Song’s expression twisted in frustration. She wished Little Deng would suffer so that Ren Bang would beat Jiang Wan to death.
“When did Jiang Wan learn medicine?”
Old Madam Song gritted her teeth and asked Madam Song.
Madam Song answered coldly, “I don’t know.”
Though she said that, her heart was filled with joy. It seemed her Yuanyuan was saved!
Jiang Wan smiled modestly at Little Deng. “It’s no trouble. I originally planned to pick some for my husband, but I never expected it would help you.”
She said this intentionally, so that later, when treating Song Jiuyuan, she could do so openly.
Indeed, after helping Little Deng, Ren Bang’s attitude towards Jiang Wan became a little more friendly. “Well, when you’re resting, you can apply medicine to your husband.”
This allowed her to treat Song Jiuyuan without fear of anyone questioning her. Madam Song’s eyes welled up with tears, overcome with emotion.
Even Song Jiuli and Song Jiuchi were pleased, and their attitudes toward Jiang Wan softened slightly.
But Old Madam Song and the second and third branches were furious. They had just separated the family, and now Jiang Wan had won favor with the officers, making them seethe with anger.
Sure enough, during the afternoon rest, Jiang Wan handed the Zhi grass to Song Jiuchi to apply the medicine to Song Jiuyuan.
Although Song Jiuchi had a rebellious nature, he knew how to repay kindness. He awkwardly said to Jiang Wan:
“Thank you, Jiang Wan.”
“No need to thank me.”
Jiang Wan waved her hand. She was helping repay the original owner’s debts. Once Song Jiuyuan recovered, she could leave without any psychological burden.
While helping Song Jiuyuan with the medicine, Song Jiuchi sneered. “Even if you helped my Big Brother, you can’t erase the foolish things you did in the past.”
That’s right, the original owner had done many foolish things to marry Song Jiuyuan. Aside from drugging him, she had climbed over walls and publicly chased after him to confess her feelings.
This was the original owner’s dark history, not Jiang Wan’s, so she was completely unconcerned.
“I was young and didn’t understand. I won’t do it again in the future.”
Her words made everyone fall silent. Yes, from now on, they were all exiles. None of them had the right to be willful anymore.
“Jiang Jie, thank you for helping me. Here’s a gift for you.”
Little Deng suddenly appeared. Since he had been bitten by the snake and couldn’t move, he had been sitting in the ox cart all morning. Now, feeling much better, he brought a roasted chicken to Jiang Wan as a thank you gift.
