Chapter 19: I Am Just That Malicious
“Can’t help.”
Song Jiuyuan directly shut his eyes, presenting a clear image of refusing to engage. This infuriated Old Madam Song to the point that she almost cursed Song Dainzi.
But Song Dainzi turned her back without a word, clearly uninterested in conversing with her. Old Madam Song could only shake with anger, pointing at Jiang Wan.
“Jiang Wan, they all share the Song surname! Breaking bones is still connected by tendons. If you just stand by and do nothing, you’re truly malicious!”
“Jiang Wan, it was my fault before, I shouldn’t have targeted you. Please, save my husband!”
Shen Qian’s eyes flickered, and no matter what, she had to make the officials despise Jiang Wan. She needed to turn the entire Song family against her.
She had just married into the Song family, and to say she had deep feelings for Song Chen would be a lie. She just couldn’t stand Jiang Wan’s arrogant and aloof demeanor.
Jiang Wan sneered, “Yes, that’s right, I’m just that malicious. I can’t help!”
She patted her clothes, stood up, and said to Little Deng, “I’m going to freshen up. You guys continue, don’t mind me.”
It would be best if they beat him even harder; she would be very happy to see it.
At this point, the sky was just beginning to lighten, and Song Chen and Second Song were covered in blood. Song Jiuyuan wasn’t as badly hurt, but he wasn’t in much better shape either.
After speaking, she seemed like an outsider as she moved towards a nearby stream to freshen up.
The sight made the Song family members angry to the point of spitting blood, while Ren Bang continued to swing the whip, but he didn’t use full force.
“Next time anyone tries to run, this will be their fate!”
The whip in his hand snapped, and Ren Bang revealed a cruel smile, scaring everyone around.
All of them had been exiled to a desolate place. Who didn’t have a little hope left?
But the officials weren’t easy to deal with; they ensured the exiled ones couldn’t get enough food and kept tormenting them. Even if they wanted to escape, they wouldn’t have the strength.
“Chen’er!”
Second Song cried out, rushing to support her son. Shen Qian also helped lift Song Chen, pretending to care for him.
Seeing the wounds on both their bodies, Second Song almost fainted from crying. Old Madam Song looked at Song Dainzi with an expression full of blame.
These people never seemed to realize their own mistakes; they were always blaming others.
When Jiang Wan returned after freshening up, she saw the Song family pushing blame onto each other, arguing in frustration.
She pretended not to notice, expertly setting up a pot over the fire, tossing a few sweet potatoes into it. Jiang Wan added some wild vegetables into the pot.
On the other side, Second Song trembled as she checked the wounds on her husband and son. Her eyes were almost swollen from crying. “What should we do? We can’t buy medicine in this wilderness.”
Shen Qian’s eyes darted, and she whispered, “Mother, I saw Jiuchu rubbing medicine on Big Brother earlier. Perhaps it was Jiang Wan who bought it.”
Old Madam Song and Second Song both froze, simultaneously recalling the scene from that night when Song Jiuyuan had a fever and Song Dainzi had begged them for help.
Anyone would hold a grudge in such a situation, and they were probably unwilling to help.
“Mother, my husband and father are in this state. We can’t afford to gamble. Even with money, we can’t buy it.”
Shen Qian was now penniless, and the thought of it made her angry. Why was Jiang Wan able to live so well?
“Mother, I can’t just watch Chen’er die in pain.”
Second Song’s gaze softened as she looked at Song Chen, afraid that Old Madam Song wouldn’t lower her pride. She even called out, “Aunt, please!”
Old Madam Song’s expression softened slightly. For the sake of her son and grandson, she had to swallow her pride.
So, when Jiang Wan had finished preparing a simple breakfast—roasted sweet potatoes with wild vegetable soup—Old Madam Song walked over.
Seeing Jiang Wan eating the roasted sweet potato with relish, Old Madam Song couldn’t help but swallow, her stomach growling from hunger. Since her son and grandson had been beaten, their porridge had not yet been served.
At this point, she was quite hungry, but even so, Jiang Wan and Song Jiuyuan acted as though they didn’t notice, continuing to eat without a word.
The only person who seemed to be affected was Song Jiuli, who was holding the porridge from the queue. “Grandmother, have you eaten?”
“Not yet.”
Old Madam Song waited for them to invite her, but there was no invitation. Not even Song Dainzi, the daughter-in-law, spoke up.
Old Madam Song felt embarrassed and sternly glanced at Song Dainzi. “Come over here. I have something to say to you.”
“Mother!”
Song Jiuchu called out. When his older brother had been coldly ignored during his fever, his heart had grown cold.
The young boy now only wanted to protect his family.
Song Dainzi smiled and shook her head. “Don’t worry, Mother will be back soon.”
Song Dainzi had always been gentle, and she had been the most competent head of the household. Even now, she carried herself with grace.
Jiang Wan watched as she followed Old Madam Song to one side. While eating her sweet potato, she kept an eye on the situation, ready to help if necessary.
“Second Brother and Chen’er are hurt. Can you bring some medicine from Jiuyuan?”
Old Madam Song still thought it was as it had been before and ordered Song Dainzi with authority. Song Dainzi laughed in disbelief and refused outright.
“The medicine was picked by Wanwan. I can’t make that decision.”
Now, Song Dainzi was acting as though she completely listened to Jiang Wan. This infuriated Old Madam Song.
“She’s your daughter-in-law. Does she dare not listen to you?”
“She doesn’t even listen to Grandmother, so what can a mother-in-law do?”
Song Dainzi’s sarcasm was not lost on Old Madam Song, but for the sake of her son and grandson, she had no choice but to swallow her anger and soften her attitude.
“I know you’re angry about Jiuyuan’s situation, but think about it. Your family has no strong man to rely on now. The Second and Third Branch still have their men. We need to support each other if we are to make it to the desolate lands, don’t we?”
“It’s only us supporting them, right?”
Song Dainzi remained unmoved. “The medicine isn’t mine. I can’t make that decision. I also need to mend Jiuyuan’s clothes, so I’m busy.”
She turned and returned to Song Jiuyuan’s side, taking the needle and thread Jiang Wan had gathered, quietly mending his clothes, completely ignoring Old Madam Song.
Old Madam Song was so angry she felt dizzy, and her eyes grew more sorrowful. This scene was caught by Song Jiuli, who looked at the bent figure of Old Madam Song and couldn’t help but ask Song Dainzi.
“Mother, what did Grandmother want?”
Hearing her call her “Grandmother” so tenderly, Song Dainzi felt a pang in her heart and bitterly pulled at her lips.
“She wants the medicine for your older brother.”
“What?!!”
Song Jiuchu exploded immediately, “How can this be? There’s barely enough medicine for Big Brother. What will happen if they take it?”
He was speechless at this shameless request. The once kind grandmother had turned into someone like this?
Song Jiuchu doubted his entire existence, and Song Jiuli widened her eyes, stammering.
“Mother, can we pick more herbs? It seems like Second Uncle and Second Brother are hurt pretty badly.”
She remembered how kind Grandmother had been to her in the past, and her heart ached. However, she didn’t want to think badly of Grandmother.
Since Jiang Wan knew herbs, they could gather more.
“Then go pick them yourself.”
Song Jiuyuan’s voice was cold. He had thought his sister was just a bit naïve, but now it seemed she was naïve in more ways than one!
