Chapter 6: Why Can’t She Learn to Fight Back?
Yun Nian’an heard the old lady Yun’s voice outside the door and quickly replied, “Grandma, I’m coming.”
She quickly changed her clothes and opened the door. The old lady Yun saw her granddaughter change her clothes and smiled.
She thought that her granddaughter must not like that outfit. Now that her granddaughter was awake, she was decisive.
“My precious baby, go wash your hands, it’s time to eat.
Our precious baby suffered a lot today, I’ll give you some good food to make up for it, you have your favorite egg custard.”
The Yun family’s food was always bad, all the grain in the house was locked in the old lady Yun’s room.
No one in the family could eat eggs, only Yun Nian’an could eat some occasionally.
Yun Nian’an didn’t hesitate and nodded, she skipped towards the well.
The old lady Yun smiled behind her. Now her granddaughter was finally not silly and stupid anymore.
After washing her hands and face, she followed the old lady Yun to the main hall.
The family members in the main hall looked at Yun Nian’an, each of them wanting to say something but stopping themselves.
They wanted to ask Yun Nian’an if she was really completely awake and wouldn’t become stupid again.
They dared not say anything in front of the old lady Yun, otherwise, she would really beat them.
The old lady Yun looked at her granddaughter and quickly put a small bowl of egg custard in front of Yun Nian’an.
She scooped some out and gave it to her grandsons.
The daughters-in-law didn’t get angry when they saw this, they were used to it.
Yun Nian’an didn’t hesitate, she was really hungry.
She planned to eat her fill and then go back to her room to check the space.
She quickly finished eating and looked at the old lady Yun, “Grandma, your egg custard is so delicious, it’s so good that I almost swallowed my tongue.”
As soon as she said this, everyone in the house looked at Yun Nian’an, and the little ones were happy.
“Sister, are you really not stupid anymore?”
The old lady Yun heard Yun Qingyu say this and kicked him under the table, “What are you talking about? When was your sister ever stupid?
You can’t even shut your mouth when you’re eating, eat if you want to! If you don’t want to, get out.”
Yun Qingyu heard his grandmother say this and pouted. His grandmother always favored his sister the most, but who could blame her, his sister had been silly and stupid for so many years?
The old lady Yun looked at her granddaughter, now awake, and she was overjoyed.
But she also felt a pang of heartache. Other families’ best daughters were raised on delicacies and wore silk and satin.
But her granddaughter was happy with just a little egg custard. She felt sorry for the little girl.
If it hadn’t been for the little girl’s persistent crying and clinging to the family… she would have been like the hunters in the neighboring village, dead or injured!
It was because of this incident and the old Taoist priest saying that Yun Nian’an was a lucky star, that she would bring endless good fortune to the old Yun family after she woke up.
The old man Yun and the old lady Yun didn’t care whether the old Taoist priest was telling the truth or not. Just because of that coincidence, they already treated little Yun Nian’an as a lucky star.
Especially after she became silly and stupid, the old lady Yun thought that the little girl had given her good fortune to the family, so she became silly and stupid.
At that time, the village head of the neighboring village organized people to go hunting in the mountains, and her youngest son happened to be good friends with the village head’s son in the neighboring village.
This was the only time they made an exception and asked Yun Lao Si to speak up, asking the men of the Yun family to go hunting in the mountains. After all, in times of famine, people couldn’t eat or wear warm clothes.
If they could really go hunting with the neighboring village and catch some prey, it would also change the family’s situation.
Who would have thought that on the day they were about to leave, little Yun Nian’an cried non-stop. No matter who tried to step out of the door, her loud cries were like she was about to die.
The whole family could only stay at home with little Nian’an. It was because of this delay that they missed the hunting trip to the neighboring village.
As a result, the men who went hunting that time either died or were injured, none of them came back whole.
The old lady Yun was always superstitious. She thought that Yun Nian’an was always well-behaved, but that day, no matter who stepped out of the house, she cried non-stop, her voice was particularly loud.
This prevented a tragic fate for the family. So even if she had to let her grandsons starve, she couldn’t let her precious granddaughter starve.
After Yun Nian’an put down her chopsticks, she went to her room to rest.
The next morning, when Yun Nian’an woke up, she felt dizzy, her whole body ached and she was weak.
After she got out of bed, Yun Qingyu came to Yun Nian’an’s bedside, “Sister, you’re awake, get up quickly! How about I take you out to play?”
Yun Nian’an nodded, “Okay, you go out first and close the door for me, I’ll come out when I’m dressed.”
Yun Qingyu quickly nodded and ran out the door.
Ye Chuhe saw her son come out and twisted his ear, “Your sister is so old, why are you running to your sister’s room early in the morning? Aren’t you ashamed?”
Yun Qingyu heard his mother say this and looked stubborn, “She’s my sister, what’s wrong with me going to call her up?”
Ye Chuhe heard her son say this and tapped his head, “Even a child knows to avoid suspicion, you’re already twelve.”
Yun Qingyu pouted, “I used to help my sister get dressed, why can’t I go call her up now?”
Yun Lao San heard his son say this and snorted from the side, “Is your sister the same as before? Quickly go wash your hands and face, it’s time to eat.”
…
At the Liu family’s house next door, early in the morning, Liu Daya’s thin little hands were chopping firewood in the courtyard.
Liu Zhaodi came out of her room and saw her older sister working diligently. She couldn’t help but sneer.
Her older sister got up before dawn to work, and she only went to bed after everyone else was asleep.
She was thin and weak, and although she was fourteen years old, she wasn’t as tall as the girls in the village who were eleven or twelve.
Liu Zhaodi looked at the calluses on her hands, her eyes dark and unclear.
Just then, Liu Cuifang saw Liu Zhaodi come out and remembered that this money-losing thing had caused her to lose one tael of silver yesterday, and she was even scolded in such a way that she lost face.
Seeing that she was only getting up now, she was furious.
She picked up a broom from the side and hit Liu Zhaodi hard.
“You money-losing thing! What time is it? Have you fed the chickens? Have you cut the grass?
Look at your older sister, she gets up before dawn to cook for the whole family, and she’s still chopping firewood. You’re such a useless slut.”
Liu Zhaodi saw the broom about to fall on her, so she kicked Liu Cuifang’s knee.
“You old hag, you know my older sister does a lot, are you all dead? Do we two little girls have to do everything?”
Then she went to Liu Daya and grabbed her hand, “You useless thing, you’re fourteen now! Why can’t you learn to fight back?”
