Chapter 13: The Marriage Agreement 1
Zeng Sibai looked at the three people in front of him. If he couldn’t fight them, he’d just avoid them.
However, before leaving, Zeng Sibai accused, “You’re not even a man! You stole my fiancée. You’re not a gentleman at all.”
Gu Tang also chimed in, “I didn’t expect you to be such a person, stealing someone else’s fiancée and still acting so arrogantly.”
Gu Leyou, seeing them wrongly accuse Lu Yan, clenched her fists. She angrily looked at the two of them and said, “Stop talking nonsense! It was you two who blocked my way. He helped me out, and you’re blaming him? How is that fair?”
Lu Yan wasn’t going to let them off easily either. He raised his fist, preparing to face off with them.
These two were clearly the type to be afraid of force. Seeing that Lu Yan was serious, they fled in fear.
Gu Leyou and the others exchanged looks and smiled. These two were really ridiculous.
Xu Qingshan had been observing the herbs in Gu Leyou’s basket with suspicion. He tentatively asked, “Miss, do you know medicine? How come you have so many herbs?”
Gu Leyou was momentarily at a loss for how to answer.
Lu Yan, noticing her hesitation, stepped in to help. “This young lady likes reading medical books. She’s just gathering herbs as the books instructed. What’s wrong with that? Besides, these herbs won’t harm anyone. Why are you so worried?”
Xu Qingshan gave an awkward smile. “I was just curious. How could such a young girl know so much about herbs? I’m just asking, is there really a need to be so defensive? And now everyone in the village knows you’ll be his fiancée soon.”
Upon hearing this, Gu Leyou’s face turned red with embarrassment. She quickly took a few steps forward, and Lu Yan and Xu Qingshan hurriedly jogged to catch up and protect her.
Gu Leyou noticed they were nearing the road leading to her house, so she turned to them and said, “You two go back. I’m almost home. I can manage from here. Thank you for protecting me today. I’ll visit Xiao Yao when I have time.”
Lu Yan nodded in acknowledgment.
They then parted ways.
After watching them leave, Gu Leyou turned and headed towards her home.
When she arrived home and was about to enter the gate, she overheard the voice of Grandma Gu. She immediately sensed something was wrong.
“You’re late! This girl hasn’t come back yet. Could it be true what your sister-in-law said? She’s really gone to that hunter’s house? Have you no shame?”
As soon as Grandma Gu finished speaking, Gu Leyou pushed open the courtyard door and entered.
Grandma Gu jumped in surprise and immediately scolded, “You devil girl, you scared me half to death!”
Gu Leyou ignored her and put down her basket. As she walked inside, she called out, “Dad, Mom, little brother, I’m back.”
When Lin Shi heard her daughter’s voice, she rushed out and hugged her, her eyes red with emotion.
“Daughter, you’re finally back! I’ve been so worried! Where did you go? Could it be true, like they said, that you went to that hunter’s house?”
“No, I was just looking for some herbs. Last time, my little brother was accidentally injured. I was afraid his wound hadn’t fully healed, so I went to find some herbs to apply,” Gu Leyou explained.
Grandma Gu, seeing that her granddaughter was ignoring her, got even angrier.
She shouted loudly in the yard.
“You, Second Branch’s family, don’t take me seriously. Come out and explain yourselves!”
Gu Hai Xiong was the most afraid of his mother. He had no choice but to face her wrath.
He lowered his head and let her scold him.
“You unfilial son! And now even a little girl dares to ignore me, completely out of control!”
Lin Shi mumbled under her breath.
“Old lady, you’re the one who said those harsh words. That’s why the girl ignored you. How can you call yourself a senior and speak like that to a junior?”
Gu Hai Xiong, standing beside his wife, heard every word clearly. He quickly signaled to his wife to stop, knowing that if his mother heard her, it would only bring trouble. His mother’s persistence was something they all knew too well.
Sure enough, when Grandma Gu heard her daughter-in-law muttering, she assumed she was complaining about her. She immediately turned to Lin Shi, her face stern, and asked coldly, “Second Branch’s wife, what are you saying? Speak up! Let everyone hear.”
Lin Shi wisely lowered her head, silent.
Gu Leyou took the opportunity to ask Grandma Gu, “Grandma, you said last time you’d pick an auspicious date for my marriage. Have you found a date? When am I marrying Lu Yan?”
When reminded, Grandma Gu remembered that she hadn’t picked a date yet. She had promised the village chief in front of everyone yesterday that she would marry off this girl soon, and couldn’t delay any further.
She huffed and said, “I’ll deal with you later,” and stormed off.
After Grandma Gu left, Gu Hai Xiong’s family finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Because Grandma Gu was very difficult to deal with, and she must have been stirred up by Big Sister Yang.
From the start, the first branch of the family had been hoping to see them fall into trouble.
During dinner, Gu Hai Xiong once again brought up the topic of the marriage.
He furrowed his brow and asked his daughter, “Daughter, we were hoping your grandmother would forget about setting a date for your marriage. Why did you remind her? Don’t you really want to marry that hunter?”
“Dad, Mom, I’m not stupid. I can’t just rush into a marriage. Grandma will definitely make a big fuss. The neighbors will gossip, and if the village chief gets involved, it’ll cause us trouble again,” Gu Leyou explained.
Gu Leyou’s brother, Gu Le Shu, added, “Yeah, Dad, I think sister is right. You know Grandma’s temper. If she catches something to complain about, she won’t let up for days and nights. Besides, actions speak louder than words. You promised to marry her off to that hunter. You can’t back out now.”
Gu Hai Xiong felt his pride hurt from being lectured by his son. He quickly regained his authority as a father and scolded, “Mind your own business! This is none of your concern. Don’t interfere.”
Gu Le Shu was frustrated and about to argue back, but a glance from Gu Leyou silenced him. He quietly ate his meal.
