Chapter 59
Zhang Chaoyang was sent back by his grandfather’s driver. It was late at night, and there were no buses. His arm was injured, and he couldn’t be out in the cold.
Grandma Qian was waiting for her grandson in the living room. When she heard footsteps coming from the hallway, she immediately got up to open the door.
“Grandma, you’re still awake? It’s so late.”
“It’s okay, I took a nap. How was it? Did your mother go crazy?”
“No, Grandpa called and had my parents come home.
Besides, Grandpa brought up my brother first, and my mother was at fault.”
Zhang Chaoyang thought about his brother. He didn’t know what to say about him.
He was very good at studying, skipping grades since he was young, and entering military academy at fifteen or sixteen.
He was the pride of the entire Zhang family, the eldest son and grandson, and he held a lot of weight with his grandfather.
Unfortunately, because of the issue of his partner, he was indecisive and kept going back and forth.
Back then, Grandpa had said that if he truly liked that girl, he would make the decision and let them get married.
But what happened? His mother threatened to die if he married that girl who would hold him back.
…
“How did you get back?”
“Grandpa had someone drive me back.”
“Well, they’re still somewhat sensible. They know you’re injured and can’t be out in the cold.
Alright, go to sleep. Get some rest. The day after tomorrow, go see Xu Di in your best state.”
Grandma went back to her room. She was tired.
Zhang Chaoyang lay in bed, thinking about Xu. He wondered if she would like him.
In the blink of an eye, it was the weekend.
Early in the morning at the Xu family’s house.
“Xu Di, where are you meeting?”
“At Aunt Wang’s house.”
“That’s good. Aunt Wang is reliable.”
Xu’s mother was thinking about whether she should go with her. When she heard it was at Liang’s house, she decided not to go.
“Mom, don’t worry. This time, I’ll definitely ask clearly. I’ll find out everything about his family history.”
“Haha… Second Sister, are you going on a blind date or conducting a background check?”
“You little brat, what do you know?”
“I know everything. According to Second Sister’s standards, it’ll be too hard for me to find a partner in the future.”
Xu Jun kept chattering. He had no idea what his second sister was thinking.
Xu Di dressed up, her hair in two braids, wearing black pants, a plaid shirt, and a red scarf. She happily went out.
On Zhang Chaoyang’s side, Grandma Qian got up early and spruced up her grandson.
His military uniform was ironed perfectly. She took out a new white shirt and a newly knitted sweater and had Chaoyang put them on. They were new clothes she had bought for him, just waiting for him to come back and wear them.
“Chaoyang, your leather shoes, polish them a bit. There’s shoe polish and a brush in the cabinet.”
Just before leaving, Grandma Qian noticed dirt on his shoes.
“Alright, go quickly. Men shouldn’t keep women waiting.”
“Salute!”
Zhang Chaoyang gave his grandmother a crisp salute. This young man was looking quite dapper.
“Alright, go quickly. Button up your coat. It’s still cold outside.”
“I know, Grandma. Wait for my good news.”
Zhang Chaoyang went to conquer his own territory. He must win it in one fell swoop!
When Xu Di arrived at Liang’s house, before she could knock, Aunt Wang opened the door to greet her.
“Aunt Wang, how did you know I was here?”
“Aunt Wang has a secret informant. Come in quickly. Chaoyang is already here.”
Aunt Wang pulled Xu Di into the house. In the living room, Zhang Chaoyang heard the sound and stood up to greet her.
“Chaoyang, Xu Di is here. Come and meet her.”
“Comrade Xu, hello, I’m Zhang Chaoyang.”
The man stood with his back to the light. His six-foot frame blocked the sunlight coming through the window, bathing him in a warm glow.
Xu Di also saw the legendary small eyes, monolids, full of life.
They weren’t the kind of small, monolid eyes you see on Korean assembly lines, nor were they like the small eyes of a certain Liang-surnamed star in TV dramas.
His face wasn’t the popular square face of this era, but slightly round.
The gaze beneath his monolids was firm and deep, full of unique charm.
Perhaps because he had been in the army for a long time, Comrade Zhang’s eyes were sharp, even though he was trying to control them.
“Comrade Xu, what do you think? Does my appearance pass?”
“Ahem…”
Xu Di was caught staring and felt a little embarrassed.
“Not bad, at least ninety points.”
After a brief awkwardness, Xu Di immediately adjusted her attitude.
It was a blind date. If you didn’t take a good look, what was the point of meeting?
“Thank you for your rating. I think Comrade Xu has ninety-five points.”
Zhang Chaoyang humorously replied, but it was also true.
Comrade Xu was really beautiful. It wasn’t the kind of beauty that would make you stop in your tracks, but she was very pleasing to the eye, not aggressive.
Her eyebrows were curved, her eyes were bright, her nose was a bit round, quite cute.
Her skin wasn’t like many girls who seemed to have a layer of powder on, white and ghastly.
“Thank you, I’ll take your word for it.”
Xu Di didn’t hold back. She thought she was pretty too.
Of course, compared to her sister, Xu Mei, she was still a bit lacking.
Xu Mei was fair-skinned, like her aunt and her father. Xu’s father only had a dark face; the parts of his body that weren’t exposed to the sun were very fair.
Xu Di looked like her mother. Her skin wasn’t dark, but it wasn’t that fair either.
Xu Jun was also dark, especially since he was always out and about, tanned and glowing.
“What are you two standing there for? Sit on the sofa and talk. It’s not like you’re standing on a train.”
Aunt Wang brought over tea and saw the two of them standing a meter apart, silent.
“Thank you, Aunt Wang.” Xu Di took the teacup and placed it on the coffee table.
“Comrade Zhang, are you injured? Is it serious?”
“It’s not serious, just a fracture.”
Zhang Chaoyang didn’t expect Comrade Xu to ask about his arm. He felt a little better.
“Chaoyang, Xu Di, have lunch here at Aunt Wang’s. Liang Bo and his wife took their child to his mother-in-law’s. It’s just me. You two stay and keep me company.”
“Then I’m in for a treat. I haven’t had Aunt Wang’s cooking in a long time.”
Zhang Chaoyang had eaten at Liang’s house many times. He had come back less often since he joined the army, but he often came over for meals when he was younger.
Liang Bo was two years older than him. They had played together since they were young.
“Aunt Wang, I’ll help you cook later.”
Xu Di didn’t refuse. Whether it worked out or not, her relationship with Aunt Wang’s family wouldn’t be affected.
“No need. You two talk. Get to know each other well. Aunt Wang can handle it herself.”
Xu Di didn’t insist on going to the kitchen. Her mission today was to go on a blind date.
Aunt Wang went to the kitchen, leaving the two of them to chat.
“Comrade Xu, what do you think of me? Don’t you dislike me?”
“Comrade Zhang, you’re joking. How could I dislike you? We just met.”
“Some people just don’t have any chemistry. At first glance, they’ll feel disgusted.”
Zhang Chaoyang was very satisfied with Comrade Xu, both in terms of appearance and personality.
People are visual creatures. Everyone likes good-looking people, and he was no exception.
From Comrade Xu’s expression just now, she was satisfied with his appearance. He caught a glimpse of the light in her eyes, although it was quickly concealed.
Xu Di thought, Comrade Zhang’s observation skills and sensitivity were extraordinary. She had to be careful in the future and not reveal her true thoughts.
“Comrade Zhang, I have a good impression of you. That’s the truth.
As you said, there’s chemistry between people.”
Xu Di was very satisfied with Zhang Chaoyang’s appearance. She thought that guys with small eyes and monolids were very charming.
“I feel the same way about Comrade Xu. I feel comfortable and at ease.”
The two of them met for the first time, and they both had a good impression of each other.
