Chapter 67
The three Xu’s returned home feeling dazed. They had just wanted to see what Zhang Chaoyang was like, but how did they end up talking about getting married?
Zhang Chaoyang’s grandmother was amazing. She subtly guided everyone to do things her way without anyone feeling offended.
“Xu Di, in the future, if you have any problems, listen to Chaoyang’s grandmother’s advice.
Mom feels that she’s not an ordinary person.”
“Mom, don’t worry. I will.
Mom, you must miss me. It’s a good thing I’m not marrying far away. I can come back often.”
Xu’s mother patted her daughter’s hand. That’s all she could think about.
When her child didn’t have a partner, she worried, afraid she wouldn’t find a good one.
Now that her child was getting married, she felt empty inside. She didn’t want her to get married so soon.
Sigh, a mother’s heart. Only when you become a mother can you understand.
Xu’s mother went back to her room to check her coupons. She had to prepare things for Xu Di’s wedding.
Cotton cloth, cotton, furniture, washbasins, mirrors…
Xu Mei had given her money directly. Xu Di was getting married nearby, so these things needed to be prepared.
Tomorrow, after work, she would have to go exchange coupons with her colleagues…
When Xu’s elder brother and his wife found out that Xu Di was getting married, they were so surprised their mouths dropped open.
“Mom, didn’t we say we would see what the guy was like? Why are you getting married already?”
Xu’s elder sister-in-law grabbed her mother-in-law’s hand, wanting her to explain. She was about to die of anxiety.
“Sigh! When we saw Zhang Chaoyang, your father and I felt he was good.
He’s tall, a spirited young man, and he looks good. His grandmother is also a good person. She genuinely likes Xu Di.
We agreed to let them be a couple. The key is that Xu Di herself is willing.
But after dinner, his grandmother started talking about their future. Chaoyang has few vacations. It’s not easy for him to come back.
If they get married now, Xu Di will have a status. She won’t be gossiped about, and it will be easier for her to take care of things, and so on. She said so much, and I thought it made sense at the time, so I agreed.
It wasn’t until we got home that I realized we hadn’t gone to discuss getting married.”
Xu’s elder sister-in-law didn’t know what to say. She never expected her younger sister to get married so quickly.
“Mom, what does the guy look like? Thick eyebrows, big eyes, a righteous face?”
Xu’s elder sister-in-law thought that Xu Di agreed to get married and wasn’t afraid of the hardship of being separated. Was it because the guy was too handsome, and Xu Di was smitten?
“He doesn’t have thick eyebrows and big eyes. He has monolids and small eyes.”
“Small eyes? How small?”
“They’re not that small. I can’t describe it. Anyway, he doesn’t give a bad impression.”
Xu’s mother couldn’t explain it either. She couldn’t describe it.
Xu’s elder sister-in-law was confused. Small eyes, but not that small. She couldn’t imagine it.
“Mom, the wedding is so rushed. What about the things?”
“Chaoyang’s grandmother said the house was newly cleaned last year. We can buy furniture at the department store.
She has coupons for the three turns and one ring. There’s a TV at home. I feel like the old lady has thought it all out and prepared everything. They came to discuss getting married.”
Xu’s mother also realized. Unfortunately, it was a done deal.
By now, the marriage application to the army probably had already been approved.
From the way Grandma Qian talked, it seemed like it could be expedited.
Forget it, stop worrying. They would get married sooner or later. Xu Di, that little girl, was happy about it.
If Xu Di knew what her mother was thinking, she would definitely retort. She didn’t. She was thinking about something else. She was calculating her ovulation period, wanting to get pregnant as soon as possible while the man was still around, a honeymoon baby.
Xu’s elder sister-in-law left her mother-in-law’s room and knocked on Xu Di’s door.
“Little Sister, Xu Di, I’m coming in.”
“Sister-in-law, come in.”
Xu Di was lying in bed, thinking about how she was about to get married. Her beloved husband wasn’t home. Her days of being carefree and alone were coming to an end.
“Xu Di, Xu Di, you’re really getting married. You just married yourself off like that?”
Xu’s elder sister-in-law looked at her younger sister lying in bed, looking quite comfortable.
“Sister-in-law, come and sit.”
Xu Di got out of bed, sat cross-legged on the bed, and made room for her sister-in-law.
Xu’s elder sister-in-law sat on the edge of the bed, staring at Xu Di for a long time.
“You little girl, you’re always smiling. You’re quite decisive.
You decided so quickly. Aren’t you afraid of regretting it later?”
“Sister-in-law, marriage and life are about being comfortable. There’s no need to regret it.”
Xu Di’s expectations for marriage and love were different. If you didn’t expect anything, you wouldn’t be disappointed.
“Little Sister, being separated, when it’s late at night and you’re lying in bed alone, aren’t you lonely?”
“Sister-in-law, when you come home from work every day, after taking care of the children and cleaning the house, do you have the energy to think about whether you’re lonely or not?”
Xu’s elder sister-in-law was stumped. When she and Dali first got married, it was quite sweet. After they had children, it seemed like they really didn’t have time to think about those things.
“What you said makes sense. Anyway, congratulations on getting married. Be a beautiful bride. As for the future, we’ll talk about it later.”
“Thank you, Sister-in-law. I accept your blessing.”
Xu Di thought about her previous life. When she was undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, her elder sister-in-law often accompanied her.
Although she was sometimes unwilling and her attitude wasn’t good, she didn’t abandon her.
In this life, Xu Di wanted to live healthily, not taking things to heart, not getting angry, and no longer being a burden to others.
“Alright, I have to go back and discuss with your brother what wedding gift to give you.”
“Thank you, Sister-in-law!”
“You’re welcome.”
Xu’s elder sister-in-law’s curiosity was satisfied. Besides, it was a done deal. All she could do was offer her sincere blessings and choose a decent wedding gift.
Xu Di was different from Xu Mei. She had spent a lot of money on Ping’an, buying him food and toys, and patiently coaxing him to play.
She remembered all of that.
Xu Di thought, she already had a lot of money, but it wasn’t legitimate. She couldn’t touch it.
The rest was her salary. She had been working for seven or eight months, and her normal salary added up to only a little over two hundred yuan.
She also occasionally bought things. Although she hadn’t spent any money, others didn’t know she hadn’t spent any money. So, her visible money couldn’t exceed two hundred yuan.
Her wedding clothes and bedding would be prepared by her mother. There wasn’t much else she needed to spend money on.
Xu Di thought, she would find time to go see Grandma Qian. Some things didn’t need to be new. She would save the money for buying a house later.
But she would wait until Zhang Chaoyang’s marriage report came through.
Xu Di knew that the political review for military marriages was very strict. Her Xu family had been poor peasants for generations, so there wouldn’t be any problems.
But to be safe, she would wait until things were more certain.
She also had to tell her grandparents. She would take Comrade Zhang Chaoyang to see them after the report was approved.
Things would happen step by step. No need to rush.
Weddings in the 1970s weren’t too complicated. They didn’t need to take wedding photos or try on dresses over and over again.
Xu Di thought about the weddings she had seen in movies and TV shows from the 1970s. Without realizing it, she fell asleep.
As for Xu’s mother, she started flipping through the coupons at home. No matter how she calculated, there weren’t enough.
She had just bought things for Xu Mei. It hadn’t even been a month, and now it was Xu Di’s turn.
How did she agree to this? What about the coupons? How would she get them?
Xu’s mother scratched her head. Tomorrow, she would mobilize everyone to exchange coupons with colleagues and relatives.
Xu Di would get married, and Little Jun was still young. She could wait a few years.
Marrying off two daughters in a row would make her wallet thinner.
Thank goodness Dali’s father had a high salary. Otherwise, she really wouldn’t be able to manage.
Marriage and weddings required real money and coupons!
