Chapter 90: Returning Home
When Feng Yi and Jiang Liyun returned to Jiucun Town, it was August 3rd, a Friday.
They had a long journey by bus before finally arriving in Jiucun Town. Upon arrival, they first went to Liyun’s pan-fried dumpling shop.
It was evening, and Mr. and Mrs. Jiang were selling fried chicken and skewers.
Recently, they added more varieties of skewers, with the most popular being the fried pork loin.
The fried pork loin sold at the stall was actually made from chicken breast, not pork loin. When Jiang Liyun was researching various recipes, she tried making it and found it quite easy to replicate.
After marinating the chicken breast and deep-frying it, it turned out to be delicious. Not only did the children in town love it, but even the adults did too. Jiang Liyun had decided to produce this marinated pork loin in the food factory and sell it uniformly.
In their country, unlike some foreign countries where chicken breast is expensive, it’s quite cheap. Selling chicken breast alone wasn’t very profitable, but if it was marinated and sold as pork loin, it could make a good profit.
Jiang Liyun also planned to purchase a machine for producing ham sausages when they had enough money and start selling chicken sausages.
In addition to fried pork loin, Mr. and Mrs. Jiang also sold fried chicken hearts and gizzards, some directly fried and others coated in batter before frying. They were all very popular.
“Dad, Mum,” Jiang Liyun called out as she entered.
“Liyun!” Wu Xiaochun smiled when she saw Jiang Liyun, but when her gaze fell on Feng Yi, she felt a bit uncomfortable.
Feng Yi had become a college student!
That was something remarkable in the eyes of Wu Xiaochun and Mr. Jiang.
They knew Feng Yi had gone to study, but they never expected him to actually get into college.
Back when Feng Yi was staying with them, doing all sorts of chores, neither Mr. Jiang nor Wu Xiaochun saw anything wrong with it. But looking back now, they felt embarrassed.
They had actually let a college student help them with manure.
A few days ago, news of Feng Yi’s college admission spread to Qiaotou Village, causing quite a stir. In Qiaotou Village, there had been people who had moved to the city after getting into vocational schools, changing their fate. However, Feng Yi was the only one who had gotten into college.
During this time, Feng Yi was the most talked-about topic in Qiaotou Village.
“Who would’ve thought Feng Yi could actually get into college?”
“Jiang Liyun has a good eye. I was puzzled back then and couldn’t understand how she could be interested in Feng Yi. Now, thinking about it, Feng Yi is quite impressive.”
“Yeah, he’s willing to do any kind of work, and now he’s even made it to college.”
“Getting into college might not be such a good thing, right? College students have high standards; he might not appreciate Jiang Liyun anymore. Jiang Liyun shouldn’t end up empty-handed.”
“Jiang Liyun already started a company, earning more than a college student. Even if Feng Yi gets into college, he won’t surpass her.”
“You guys are worrying for no reason. He’s already different from us.”
…
Sun Jinshan recently loved chatting with people about Feng Yi: “My brother-in-law, casually studying and casually taking exams, unexpectedly got into college.”
“I was lazy with my studies back then. Otherwise, I might have also gone to college.”
“My wife almost got into college. Unfortunately, we couldn’t afford her education.”
…
But when he returned home, he dared not say these things, lest Jiang Liping suddenly decide to make him study.
Having been married to Jiang Liping for over two years, Sun Jinshan knew more about her than before they were married.
Jiang Liping wasn’t the virtuous and kind person he had imagined. She didn’t like doing chores, enjoyed taking advantage of others, and refused to suffer losses.
But Jiang Liping was good-looking!
Giving birth made Jiang Liping gain some weight, but she looked even more charming. Anyway, Sun Jinshan liked it.
As for those little faults… Well, he also didn’t like doing chores…
Sun Jinshan and Jiang Liping had their quarrels, but overall, they were doing well. The thing Sun Jinshan disliked most about Jiang Liping was how strict she was with him.
But his parents were happy about it, and Jiang Liping was strict because she cared about him. So he endured it!
Sun Jinshan knew about Jiang Liyun and Feng Yi’s return today. He lived with Jiang Liping in the town and, seeing that it was dinner time, came together with her and their daughter.
Although Sun Jinshan was already married, he still had a passion for entertainment. When Jiang Liping was pregnant, he had no expectations for the child and found it troublesome.
However, Jiang Liping always made him take care of the child. As he took care of the child, he gradually started valuing the little one more.
“Your daughter likes you the most; she always wants you to hold her.” Today, Jiang Liping used this as a reason to hand the child over to Sun Jinshan.
“My girl is closest to me.” Sun Jinshan proudly kissed his daughter’s cheek and came to Liyun’s Pan-fried Dumpling Shop, where he saw Feng Yi.
“College student, long time no see,” Sun Jinshan teased with a hint of jealousy.
“Long time, no see,” Feng Yi replied.
Although there was a hint of jealousy in Sun Jinshan’s heart, he was quite curious about college life and soon began questioning Feng Yi about various aspects of attending college.
He wouldn’t go to college himself, but his daughter might!
“His daughter is so smart! She must become a college student.”
Shortly after Sun Jinshan arrived, Jiang Lihai came with He Chunlin.
Jiang Lihai had been married to He Chunlin for almost two years. A few months ago, He Chunlin gave birth to a son. Now, she came holding her son in her arms.
Seeing He Chunlin clinging to her child, Jiang Liping rolled her eyes inwardly.
He Chunlin spoiled her brother too much; Jiang Liping thought she was a bit foolish.
Through observation, Jiang Liping discovered that the more men were made to invest, the more dependent they became. For example, when men were involved in raising their children from a young age, their attachment to the child would be deep, and they wouldn’t want to mistreat them.
But if women didn’t let men participate in raising the child, men’s feelings towards the child wouldn’t be as deep.
So, Jiang Liping found ways to make Sun Jinshan take care of the child. As a result, Sun Jinshan’s affection for the child grew stronger.
She could still slack off!
He Chunlin also didn’t approve of Jiang Liping.
She didn’t think Jiang Liping acted like a mother by letting Sun Jinshan take care of the child.
Look, Sun Jinshan is already lighting up a cigarette. What if he accidentally burns the child?
“Sun Jinshan, don’t smoke with the child around.” Jiang Liyun immediately intervened upon seeing Sun Jinshan smoking.
Sun Jinshan: “…” He accidentally forgot about it again. Jiang Liyun always nags whenever she sees him smoking.
He extinguished the cigarette, then continued boasting with Jiang Lihai.
Jiang Liyun looked at Jiang Liping and said, “Keep an eye on Sun Jinshan. Don’t let him smoke in front of the child.”
Jiang Liping agreed but didn’t take it too seriously.
At this time, there were few reports about the harmful effects of smoking on health, especially in rural areas where many men smoked. Smoking was even considered a tool for showing off among some men.
They hadn’t even considered the idea of avoiding smoking around children.
Jiang Liyun turned to Sun Jinshan and said, “Sun Jinshan, I met someone in Shanghai this time, and his child developed asthma at a young age because he smoked at home all the time.”
Sun Jinshan asked, “What’s asthma?”
Jiang Liyun had to explain it to him.
At that time, the internet wasn’t widely available, and people had very limited access to information, so their knowledge was limited.
After listening, Sun Jinshan finally realised: “I won’t smoke in front of my well-behaved daughter anymore.”
Smoking wasn’t a good thing; Sun Jinshan, still young, already had yellow teeth.
But quitting smoking wasn’t easy, especially for someone like Sun Jinshan, who always shared cigarettes with others.
Jiang Liyun didn’t say much more, and at that moment, Feng Yi spoke up: “Sister Liyun, I definitely won’t smoke in the future!”
He had already noticed that Jiang Liyun didn’t like people smoking.
In that case, he was determined to seize the opportunity to show off!
“Yeah, don’t smoke. Smoking isn’t a good thing! It shortens your lifespan,” Jiang Liyun said with a smile.
Sun Jinshan: “…” He felt targeted.
Jiang Lihai, who occasionally smoked a few cigarettes lately, asked, “ShShould he stop smoking? Not only does smoking harm children, but it also shortens their lifespan.
Jiang Lihai used to not smoke when he was poor. In the past two years, after getting married and having a child, he started smoking when he could afford it. However, he wasn’t addicted yet and thought quitting would be easy.
With everyone present, they could start the meal. Today, they would eat together at the fried dumpling shop, and tomorrow night, they would host a few tables in Bridgehead Village to invite Jiang Er Uncle, Jiang Xiao Aunt, and others for a feast. This tradition was upheld whenever someone in the village achieved something significant, and Feng Yi earning a spot in college was no exception.
However, Jiang Liyun’s return this time wasn’t just about organising the banquet. Between the renovation, renting a place, and the capital being depleted, she still owed some money.
This time, Jiang Liyun actually wanted to borrow some money. Although Sun Jinshan seemed like someone with money, in reality, he didn’t have much. Jiang Lihai was in a similar situation, so borrowing money from these two wasn’t an option.
Fortunately, in the past two years, Jiang Liyun has met some people in Nine Curves Town. Borrowing money wasn’t difficult.
Her livestock farm and fried dumpling shop were both operational. She needed the money to open a restaurant in Shanghai. She was willing to pay interest, and Laibo Cheng’s father readily lent her fifty thousand yuan.
No wonder this guy went bankrupt in his past life; he was easily persuaded to invest recklessly.
In the morning, she borrowed money, and in the afternoon, Jiang Liyun and Feng Yi returned to Bridgehead Village. Their old house, though vacant, was clean and filled with silkworms.
These silkworms belonged to Jiang Er Uncle’s family. After Jiang Er Uncle and his wife left, Jiang Er Uncle’s family borrowed this house from them to raise silkworms.
“Feng Yi, you’re a college student now.” Jiang Er Uncle wanted to say something to Feng Yi but struggled to express it. Seeing other people educate him was acceptable, but now that Feng Yi was a college student, what right did he have to lecture him?
Jiang Er Uncle turned to Jiang Liyun and said, “Liyun, Feng Yi has entered college now. You can’t let him do everything. You should treat him better. You’re a woman; you should do more household chores.”
Jiang Liyun: “…” Jiang Er Uncle, who enjoyed educating others, was really unlikable.
Feeling a bit stifled, Jiang Er Uncle turned to Jiang Liyun and said, “Liyun, now that Feng Yi has entered college, you can’t let him do everything. You should treat him better. As a woman, you should do more household chores.”
Jiang Liyun: “…” The person who likes to educate others, Jiang Er Uncle, is really unlikable.
“Second Uncle, I like doing household chores,” Feng Yi interrupted Jiang Er Uncle’s words.
Jiang Er Uncle: “…”
Jiang Er Uncle felt a bit suffocated, and the family next door, the Fengs, were infuriated.
Ever since the news of Feng Yi entering college spread in the village, almost everyone mocked them!
