Chapter 28: The Mysterious Person

Upon hearing the commotion, Bai Linglong immediately set down her pen, which she had been using to record prescriptions, and quickly made her way to the entrance of the medical hall.

There, she saw a young woman with disheveled hair and tear-streaked cheeks, cradling a pale, weak little boy in her arms.

The crowd automatically parted to make way for her as Bai Linglong ushered the woman and the child into the medical hall.

The woman was in tears, “Miraculous Doctor, please save my younger brother! He’s had a high fever since yesterday, and nothing seems to help. He keeps talking nonsense!”

Bai Linglong simultaneously comforted the woman and instructed her to lay the child down on the examination table. She reached out to feel the little boy’s forehead, which was burning with fever, then examined his eyelids before carefully checking his pulse.

The pulse was erratic and weak, causing Bai Linglong to furrow her brow. She thought to herself that the child’s symptoms were quite puzzling and not merely a case of common cold or fever.

After a thorough examination, Bai Linglong solemnly addressed the girl, “Miss, your younger brother is suffering from a rare infection of heat toxins, compounded by his frail constitution, which has resulted in a severe condition. This heat toxin is rampaging through his body and has already affected his organs. But don’t worry; I will find a way to treat him.”

Fear and worry filled the young woman’s eyes. “Miraculous Doctor, he’s still so young! You must save him. We are poor and might not be able to pay much for the consultation, but I’m willing to do anything as long as he gets better.”

Bai Linglong gently patted the young woman’s shoulder. “Don’t worry about the consultation fee right now; saving your younger brother is the priority.” With that, she quickly turned and rummaged through her medicine box for the necessary herbs.

While searching, she instructed Doctor Zhang, “Doctor Zhang, please prepare some herbs to clear heat and cool the blood, following the method I taught you. Be quick.”

Doctor Zhang immediately complied and hurried off.

Bai Linglong then took out her silver needles and began to administer acupuncture to the little boy.

Her technique was skilled, with each needle precisely targeting the acupoints, attempting to alleviate the heat toxins within the little boy.

During the procedure, the child occasionally let out painful whimpers, while the young woman held her younger brother’s hand tightly, tears streaming down on her face.

Half an hour later, Doctor Zhang rushed back, carrying a bowl of the prepared herbal decoction.

Bai Linglong carefully took the medicine and gently fed it to the little boy.

As she administered the medicine, she softly encouraged him, “Little friend, drink this medicine, and you will get better.” Though the little boy was somewhat dazed, he instinctively cooperated, managing to swallow the herbal concoction with great effort.

After administering the medicine, Bai Linglong stayed by the little boy’s side, monitoring him for a while. Gradually, his high fever subsided, and his breathing became more stable. Only then did she finally relax.

She turned to the young woman and said, “For now, your younger brother’s condition has stabilized but he will need further treatment and medication. I will prescribe a few more medicines for him; you should give them to him on time. He should rest a lot these days, and his diet should be light.”

The young woman nodded repeatedly, expressing her gratitude. “Miraculous Doctor, we are eternally grateful for your kindness. Once my younger brother is better, we will properly thank you.”

Bai Linglong smiled, saying, “Don’t worry about it; it’s my duty. Take your younger brother home first, and if anything happens, you can come back to me anytime.”

The young woman thanked her profusely and left the medical hall with her younger brother in her arms. After seeing them off, Bai Linglong, feeling exhausted, began to clean up the medical hall.

Doctor Zhang came over, looking up to her with admiration. “Master, you saved so many people today and showed such care for the poor patients. You truly embody the spirit of a benevolent physician.”

Bai Linglong smiled, “It’s what we doctors are meant to do. By the way, I’ve finished seeing all ten of the patients today. It’s getting late; you should go home and get some rest too.”

After Doctor Zhang left, Bai Linglong was about to close the door to the medical hall when she noticed a figure lurking at the corner of the street.

The person, seeing that she had noticed him, hesitated for a moment before slowly approaching.

As he drew closer, she saw that he was a mysterious man dressed in a black robe, his head lowered, his hat brim pulled low.

The man spoke in a low voice, “Miraculous Doctot, I’ve been looking for you. I have a task that requires your skills. The reward will be generous; if you agree, I can give you anything you want.”

Bai Linglong looked at him with caution, “Who are you? Where are you from? Why haven’t you arrived earlier in the day?”

The mysterious man paused, “This is a really important topic, and I cannot reveal too much for now. Miraculous Doctor, please rest assured. As long as you come with me, you will know when we arrive.”
