Chapter 29: A Rare Illness
Bai Linglong’s gaze sharpened as she stared intently at the mysterious man, her mind racing. His behavior was suspicious, and his intentions were unclear, but as a doctor, she could not shrink back if there was truly a critical patient in need.
Taking a deep breath, she spoke firmly, “I will go with you, but let me make it clear: if I discover anything amiss or if you are hiding something from me, I will cease to treat this matter immediately.”
The mysterious man nodded quickly, stepping aside to gesture for her to proceed. He then led Bai Linglong out of the town.
As they walked, the moonlight cast a hazy glow, and the surroundings were eerily quiet, with only the sound of their footsteps echoing along the empty road.
Bai Linglong tightly gripped the medicine box, remaining vigilant, her eyes darting around to observe any movements in the shadows. After a short while, they arrived at a slightly dilapidated courtyard.
The mysterious man approached and gently knocked on the door. It creaked open with an “ee-ya” sound, and a similarly dressed young servant peeked out. Upon seeing the mysterious man, he quickly opened the door wider.
Bai Linglong followed the two men into the courtyard, noting the desolate atmosphere with no signs of life.
Her apprehension grew, and just as she was about to ask a question, the mysterious man stopped and turned to her, saying, “Miraculous Doctor, the patient is inside. Please follow me.”
Entering the dimly lit room, Bai Linglong saw a frail figure lying on the bed, his complexion as pale as paper, devoid of any color.
She quickly approached, ready to check the patient’s pulse when suddenly she heard a faint rustling sound, as if someone was lurking in the shadows.
Bai Linglong spun around and called out loudly, “What’s going on here? What are your intentions?” She snorted coldly, “If you wish to keep things confidential, there’s no need for such theatrics. If you’re truly seeking for medical help, you should be honest.”.”
At that moment, the patient on the bed stirred slightly and weakly spoke, “Miraculous Doctor, it was my insistence to come here. There are indeed circumstances I cannot disclose. I have been tormented by this illness for a long time, and despite seeking out renowned doctors, none could help. I heard of your exceptional medical skills and came to ask you to save me.”
Bai Linglong looked at the patient’s haggard face, her anger gradually subsiding. She approached and began to check his pulse carefully. The pulse was weak and erratic, with a sense of evil energy surging within.
Bai Linglong furrowed her brow, contemplating for a moment before saying, “Your condition is indeed troublesome. It is caused by prolonged exposure to evil toxins, compounded by your own qi and blood deficiency, which has led to organ failure. Healing this will not be a quick process.”
A glimmer of despair flickered in the patient’s eyes. “Is my recovery really impossible? “
Bai Linglong reassured him, “There is a way to help. I will first stabilize your condition with acupuncture, and then I will prescribe some medicines to regulate your qi and blood, detoxify, and dispel the evil toxins. If you take them on time, there might still be a glimmer of hope. However, during this process, you must truthfully disclose all the details of your symptoms and previous treatments to me without any concealment.”
The patient nodded quickly, “Absolutely. As long as you can help me recover, I will tell you everything.”
Bai Linglong took out her silver needles from the medicine box and began the acupuncture treatment.
Her technique was skilled and steady, with each needle precisely inserted at the acupoints.
As the needles pierced his skin, the patient’s complexion gradually became more relaxed, and his previously rapid breaths began to stabilize.
Once she completed the acupuncture, Bai Linglong started to write out a prescription.
As she wrote, she advised the patient on dietary restrictions and daily precautions.
The mysterious man watched from the side, secretly admiring Bai Linglong’s medical skills.
After finishing the prescription, Bai Linglong handed it to the mysterious man. “Some of the herbs on this list are quite rare. If you can’t find them, I will suggest alternatives. You should gather the herbs as soon as possible and prepare them on time. I will return tomorrow to check on the condition.”
The mysterious man took the prescription and deeply bowed to Bai Linglong. “Miraculous Doctor, we owe you so much today. Your kindness will be remembered.”
Bai Linglong waved her hand dismissively. “Let’s hold off on the thanks until the patient recovers.” With that, she turned and left the courtyard.
This illness was quite rare, and there might be hidden secrets behind it.
She decided that when she returned tomorrow, she would uncover the truth behind it all.
