Apocalypse: Living the Good Life Deep in the Mountains Chapter 43: I Am His Partner

The woman thrown onto the ground glared at Nan Muran’s retreating figure, wishing she could kill her.

She had seen everything clearly inside the room. If it hadn’t been for Nan Muran blocking those soldiers, her husband wouldn’t have been bitten by a zombie.

Suddenly, her hand touched a flower shovel behind her. Evil surged within her, and her grip on the shovel tightened. Without hesitation, she charged at Nan Muran, “You should die…”

Everyone nearby gasped in shock, watching as the shovel flew toward the back of Nan Muran’s head. In such a situation, they couldn’t react fast enough to save her.

“Ranchan, kick backward!” shouted the anxious Jiawu from the other side.

Nan Muran instinctively kicked backward.

The woman holding the shovel was sent flying. If it weren’t for the wall nearby, she might not have stopped.

The pain in her abdomen almost caused the woman to faint.

After regaining her senses, she started to scream loudly, hoping to attract more attention: “The soldiers are going to kill people…”

The leading sergeant immediately furrowed his brows, clearly annoyed. “Big sister, stop shouting. We just saved you. How could we kill you?”

“Yeah, are you even reasonable?” A younger soldier felt genuinely wronged.

“You catch her! I saw it with my own eyes. She intentionally delayed our rescue, causing my husband’s death. This is murder!” The woman angrily pointed at Nan Muran.

Since she couldn’t take revenge by killing her, catching her would work too.

Her unreasonable behavior left the soldiers stunned. Catch her? Were they still living in the pre-apocalypse world? Moreover, Nan Muran hadn’t done anything wrong.

“Soldiers won’t take the side of ordinary people…” The woman cried again, seeing that they were still unmoved.

Nan Muran glanced at the soldiers standing awkwardly by the side and suddenly said in a calm voice, “Everyone, stop trying to persuade her. Go back to your vehicles.”

“Let her cry here. It will be perfect for the zombies tracking the scent to come by and serve as their appetizer.”

The woman was terrified upon hearing Nan Muran’s words. She was so stunned that she couldn’t catch her breath and began coughing violently. Blood started to stain the corner of her mouth from the internal injuries.

“This is the apocalypse, not a time when you can act as you please through moral manipulation.”

Nan Muran looked at the woman coldly, a short knife appearing in her hand at just the right moment. “I’ll give you two choices: either go home now and behave, or I’ll help you end your life and relieve you of all your pain.”

The woman, seeing Nan Muran’s frosty gaze and the gleaming silver knife, began to tremble uncontrollably. She immediately crawled home, slamming the door shut behind her.

The soldiers were left dumbfounded, watching her actions. That was it?

But didn’t she forget there was someone else in the house, who was about to mutate?

“Uh, thank you,” the leading sergeant said to Nan Muran, somewhat embarrassed.

On the other side, hearing the commotion, Chen Jianguo and Guo Fei rushed out of the house.

“Ranchan, are you hurt?” Guo Fei immediately rushed over to Nan Muran, his tone full of concern.

The surrounding soldiers looked at him in bewilderment. Big brother, what are you joking about? Someone who could kick a person so far—what could possibly happen to her?

“I’m fine. Fei-ge, are you done talking?” Nan Muran noticed the strange expressions on everyone around her and quickly changed the topic.

“Yeah, mostly. There are still some details to discuss.”

“Then, Chen…”

“Colonel.” Chen Jianguo quickly corrected her. He was concerned that she might call him “comrade.” That wouldn’t be a big problem, but it felt strange given the current situation.

Nan Muran motioned for Chen Jianguo to step a bit farther away from the crowd. “Colonel, can I ask you about someone?”

“I can’t be sure, but you can ask. I’ll help as much as I can,” Chen Jianguo said, having developed a bit of fondness for Nan Muran since he had been talking so comfortably with Guo Fei.

As long as it wasn’t against regulations, he wouldn’t hide anything from her.

Nan Muran looked at Chen Jianguo, feeling suddenly nervous. “Do you know Si Ye?”

Upon hearing the name Si Ye from this pretty young girl, Chen Jianguo’s pupils clearly contracted, his surprise evident.

He was the commander of the Blood Wolf Special Warfare Brigade, and the head of the Wolf Pack team, led by Si Ye, was his prized asset. But how could this young girl possibly know him?

“You know him, right?” Nan Muran was a psychic.

Even though Chen Jianguo remained calm, he couldn’t escape her sharp perception.

Looking at the excited expression on the girl’s face, Chen Jianguo felt some reluctance in telling her the truth. “Can I ask you a question first?”

“Go ahead.”

“How do you know Si Ye?” This was an important matter to Chen Jianguo.

The existence of the Wolf Pack team was a top military secret. Every member was a weapon of utmost secrecy. This young girl shouldn’t know about them.

Without hesitation, Nan Muran answered, “I’m his partner.” This was the story she had decided on before approaching Chen Jianguo.

“What?” Chen Jianguo was no longer calm. Since when did that cold and indifferent kid have a partner? Was he deceiving the organization?

“Yeah, I’m his partner. We’ve only just started dating. With the situation now, I’m worried about him.”

“Colonel, could you take me to see him?” Nan Muran spoke in a rush, her tone filled with expectation.

“You’ve just started dating?” Chen Jianguo was even more confused now.

The head of the Wolf Pack team hadn’t had any leave for over a year. How could they have started dating?

Nan Muran nodded, feeling guilty. “We met online.”

“Online dating?” The normally composed, iron-willed general seemed completely stunned.

“Yeah, we haven’t met in person yet.” Nan Muran continued fabricating the story.

Chen Jianguo nodded. “Really? That guy, online dating?”

“What’s wrong with young people dating online?” Nan Muran muttered.

Chen Jianguo thought for a moment and nodded. Indeed, if it weren’t for online dating, that gloomy kid would probably have remained single his whole life.

Looking at the expectant expression on Nan Muran’s face, Chen Jianguo couldn’t help but admit that they made a good match.

Unfortunately, with a sigh of regret, he said, “I can’t take you to see him.”

“Why? Is it because of his identity? Don’t worry, I understand the rules and know the need for confidentiality,” Nan Muran said anxiously.

“Si Ye is an orphan. If you say you’re his partner, I’ll consider you his family.”

“Kid, what I’m about to tell you might be hard to bear.”

The tone of Chen Jianguo became heavy. “The Wolf Pack team has been out of contact since today, exactly one month ago.”

Nan Muran was immediately stunned. “Out of contact for a month?”

“Yes. In the second month of the apocalypse, the Wolf Pack team, along with nine other teams, left the Wolf Den to carry out a mission. The others all returned before the end of the month, but the Wolf Pack team… they completely lost contact.”

“Although I firmly believe they’re still alive, there’s no news of them at the Wolf Den,” Chen Jianguo said, his tone filled with pain. He cared deeply for Si Ye and the team.

“Where did they lose contact?” Nan Muran’s voice trembled slightly.

“Mount Cui.”

Nan Muran stared at Chen Jianguo, feeling as if she had fallen into an ice cave. “Four people… lost contact at Mount Cui exactly one month ago?”
