Chapter 5: Just Wait
When Zhao Lun spoke, although he cried from the pain with a runny nose and tears streaming down, he still felt indignant. He thought that the baby panda was a wild animal and not raised by the Chen Feng family, so what was wrong with him coming to catch it?
After thinking it over, he cleverly suggested, “How about this? I’ll give you fifty thousand, we split it half and half.”
When he saw the stunned looks on Chen Feng and the soldiers’ faces, Zhao Lun started to panic. “I can’t give any more, don’t be too greedy.”
Hearing such whimpering words and seeing the pain that brought tears to his eyes, Chen Feng didn’t know what to say for a while.
This guy really acted like a total rascal.
He totally failed to understand the seriousness of the situation!
Chen Feng waved his hand and said, “Take him to the police station, let the officers teach him some laws. This guy slipped through the cracks of nine years of compulsory education.”
Zhao Lun protested, “I finished third grade!”
Chen Feng chuckled, “So you still missed six years, right? Want to make up those lessons in jail?”
Zhao Lun held his head and groaned from the pain but didn’t dare talk back.
Although he didn’t study much and didn’t know the law, he was still full of himself, yet he wasn’t truly stupid. The yard was full of soldiers, people he absolutely couldn’t mess with. He just tried to bribe them, even brought out fifty thousand to show sincerity, but Chen Feng and his crew didn’t budge at all.
In his mind, he was still muttering that these soldiers were fools. If he could earn fifty thousand a day, each of them could get at least ten thousand.
Refusing easy money—such bastards!
Then, as if he suddenly thought of something, this guy said shamelessly, “Just you wait, my Brother Qiang will definitely take care of you all. I’m doing this for him.”
“You’ve heard of Brother Qiang, right? Who doesn’t know him in all of Yinjian Town?”
“He runs a big restaurant in the city!”
“That baby panda was personally requested by him. I already agreed to deliver it to him tomorrow.”
Chen Feng’s eyelids twitched involuntarily, and the soldiers all struggled to hold back their laughter, showing all kinds of odd expressions. A hulking young man, built like a human bear, kicked Zhao Lun’s butt. “Aren’t you good at being honest and seeking leniency?”
Just like picking up a chick, he grabbed Zhao Lun and walked him to the village entrance, where police officers already waited.
But what puzzled the police was that the village dogs made no sound at all. They didn’t notice the presence or actions of a stranger.
Thrown into the police car, Zhao Lun still grumbled, “The electric bike I stole from the repair shop is still in the bamboo forest.”
Looking at the guy who’d just been taught a lesson this afternoon, his face fully bandaged, the officers were speechless. Now they’d at least have to keep him detained for ten days or half a month.
The officer driving shook his head as he looked at this guy. “Rotten mud won’t stick to a wall.”
The police car started up and soon vanished into the night in the mountains.
When the rooster’s crow rang out in the village, calls echoed one after another. In the mountain valleys, faint mists like gauze drifted slowly before dawn.
Occasional barks sounded from the dogs, and as the sky brightened, smoke began to rise from the village chimneys.
Birds started their noisy chorus, and at that moment, Chen Feng woke Little Linglong with a gentle shake.
“My little darling, my smart cutie, sleeping early and waking early keeps you healthy.”
“Didn’t you want to learn? Daddy will start teaching you today.”
“But first, we have to make breakfast.”
With a warm, damp towel in hand, he placed it over Linglong’s rosy little face. The sleepy little cutie perked right up after a gentle rub.
With Daddy’s help, she put on a cream-colored cartoon-printed short-sleeve set and pink sneakers, then swung her arms and legs and followed Chen Feng out beneath the eaves to brush her teeth.
She even copied Chen Feng by drinking water, tilting her head back to gargle, and then spat the water into the gutter under the eaves.
Her milky cuteness melted Chen Feng’s heart.
After setting her cup and toothbrush away, the little girl took Daddy’s hand and said in her soft voice, “Ah pa~ I wanna~ go~ potty~”
Well, nature calls!
When everything was done, the sunrise, golden as an egg yolk, peeked over the horizon, spreading soft orange-red light over the trees, rooftops, and ground.
Little Silly ran out from the bamboo garden in the yard, where a small cluster of golden bamboo grew. He treated that as his little den.
When Little Silly appeared, Linglong drank her milk even faster.
When the baby panda came up to her, she burped, handed the empty bottle to Little Silly to hold, and said with a childish voice, “Silly~ Silly~ finished~ the milk~”
Chen Feng suddenly wanted to laugh—his little girl was clearly afraid Silly would try to steal her milk.
He gently cradled his daughter in his arms and smiled. “Linglong, Little Silly is your good friend. Good friends need to learn to share.”
“Why don’t you mix up some milk powder for Little Silly?”
“Daddy just showed you how to make it. Remember?”
Seeing the hopeful look from Little Silly, and her handsome daddy smiling at her, the little girl licked her lips and answered in her milky voice, “Mix~ milk~”
Swinging her little arms and legs, she wobbled off toward the kitchen, looking so adorable that Chen Feng found it irresistible.
Chen Feng followed by her side, watching as she picked up a stool and stood at the countertop. Mimicking his earlier actions, she opened the can of milk powder, scooped out a spoonful, and poured it into a small stainless-steel bowl Dad handed her. Then she set it under the water dispenser and pressed the switch.
Filtered well water heated by the dispenser flowed into the small bowl.
Exactly two hundred milliliters.
She clumsily stirred it with a spoon, and once all the formula dissolved, the little girl even tasted some herself and grinned from ear to ear.
Carefully, she climbed down from the stool and tiptoed over to set the small bowl on the ground.
Linglong called her little friend, “Silly~ come drink milk~”
Little Silly ran over excitedly, rubbed up against Little Linglong, and stuck out his soft little tongue to drink greedily.
Squatting beside Little Silly, Little Linglong reached out with her tender white hands, gently stroking Little Silly. Looking up at her daddy, her face shone with a brilliant smile, like a little angel aglow.
Chen Feng gave her a thumbs-up. “Our little darling is amazing!”
The little baby stood up cautiously, kicked her legs, and babbled, “Ah~ pa~”
Chen Feng laughed at her adorable appearance. “All right, let’s work out. If you learn, you can beat up bad guys.”
Hand in hand with his little one, Chen Feng took her to the yard and taught her the military boxing forms.
The milky-voiced little girl copied him with great effort, shouting “Ah pa, Ah pa” as she practiced, which made her grandparents burst into laughter.
Early in the morning, joy filled the courtyard.
After practicing with his little girl for half an hour, the smell of breakfast came flooding out of the kitchen. The little one sniffed the aroma and called out in her sweet voice, “Eat~ lunch~”
Her cheeks flushed as sweat soaked her back.
Yi Qinghua wiped her down with a warm towel. Then she handed Linglong a bottle filled with warm water, which the little girl hugged and quickly drained, letting out a long sigh of relief. “Ha~”
Afterwards, Grandma carried her obediently to the high chair. Seeing today’s breakfast, she clapped her small hands excitedly. “Yummy~”
Even though she still spoke unclearly, she already expressed what she wanted.
Egg custard, chicken and potato patties, carrot juice.
The little one finished off the custard first, grabbed the meat patty with both hands like a little hamster, and after she finished, she drained the carrot juice and licked her lips, completely satisfied.
After breakfast, the sunlight already grew scorching.
The birds’ singing turned weak, but the cicadas got even noisier.
After playing with Little Silly under the shade for a while, the little one soon flopped down for a nap, hugging Little Silly like a pillow.
Chen Feng tiptoed over to capture this amusing scene with a photo.
He snapped his fingers lightly and the heat in the air started to drift away, making the whole courtyard much more pleasant.
At that moment, Yi Qinghua beckoned to Chen Feng and said in a soft voice, “Carry the little one into the house to sleep. Let’s have a talk.”
Chen Feng walked over to his mother and sat in a yellow rosewood armchair. The unique and refreshing scent quietly filled his nose. He smiled and said, “Let her and Little Silly sleep there.”
Mother nodded. “Fine, so tell us, what are your plans for the future?”
“And, I already told Caiwei. She will come over in a few days. Whatever needs to be done, has to be settled.”
Chen Feng laughed, “Before coming home, I wanted to find a wife. Now that I even have a child, I’ll focus on family. I’ll be a stay-at-home dad.”
Yi Qinghua sounded a bit dissatisfied. “You won’t go job hunting, want to be a freeloader?”
Chen Dachang sat under the big osmanthus tree, looked up at the scattered golden flower buds, and commented from the side, “Other people want to freeload but don’t have the chance.”
Mother glared at him fiercely. “Old fool, shut your mouth!”
“You’re wishing that ‘other person’ was you, right? Always had so many sneaky ideas!”
Chen Feng watched his parents and grinned, “Just worried that Lu Caiwei won’t let me freeload. What do you think—can she?”
Mother scolded him bitterly, “Little Wei is the CEO of a multinational corporation. Hmph, you should count yourself lucky she even likes you.”
“If you don’t work hard and keep acting so sloppy, one day Little Wei will just dump you.”
“A grown man who can’t even provide for his family—who would like that?”
“When she gets back, I’ll tell her myself—send you to work as her bodyguard. Didn’t you always claim you were the best at fighting?”
Chen Feng raised an eyebrow. “Be a bodyguard?”
Mother thought for a moment very seriously, then said sternly, “Exactly. So my daughter-in-law won’t get bullied outside. She’s your daughter’s mother—if you don’t protect her, who will?”
“That’s settled!”
Chen Feng pouted, “I want to be a stay-at-home dad. The baby’s mother is never home, so as her father, I have to give Linglong a complete childhood.”
“Please, if you go on like this, will my sweet granddaughter have to get up and cook breakfast for you and take care of you every day?”
“It’s just like in those short videos—you’re running on your own kid’s CPU.” Mother sneered in contempt and didn’t give this war god even a scrap of dignity.
Chen Feng scratched his head and laughed awkwardly, embarrassed that his mother could see through him so easily.
Fortunately, Linglong didn’t realize it at all, and she seemed to love it!
He knew he must raise his daughter to be an independent, self-reliant child—full of confidence and strength!
