The location where the zombies had gathered was just beyond the range of her investigation, so she couldn’t figure out the reason for their gathering.
“It’s out of my perception range. We’ll need to head east for two more blocks,” Nan Muran said as she looked at the others and began walking in the direction where the zombies were gathering.
“What’s going on?” Si Ye noticed something was wrong after seeing Nan Muran’s reaction.
“All the zombies on the three streets to the east are gathering in one place. This is highly unusual,” Nan Muran replied, her gaze darkening as she looked at Si Ye. “It could be dangerous.”
“It’s okay. I’ll go with you,” Si Ye said, immediately following her.
After walking two blocks east, they arrived at a supermarket beneath a building with people on the upper floors.
All the zombies in the vicinity had already left, and even the group’s presence couldn’t attract their attention anymore.
Nan Muran focused intently on investigating the reason behind the sudden gathering of the zombies.
The gathering spot was the library on a university campus.
Surrounding the entire library in different directions were five level-two zombies, emitting the unique signals that zombies use to call each other.
This call caused the zombies within a three-kilometer radius of the library to frantically converge on that location.
At the core of the area was a fully equipped 12-person special forces team.
They were armed with firearms, launching a full counterattack while protecting five individuals of different ages who appeared to be researchers.
The reason they didn’t hear any gunshots was that the weapons were equipped with silencers.
It seemed the military had already realized that zombies were sensitive to sound. If they encountered regular zombies, this method would work without issue and was quite clever.
However, they had unfortunately run into five level-two zombies, who had slightly developed intelligence and were much more agile, making such tactics ineffective.
On the third floor of the supermarket, the man on lookout saw Nan Muran and the others suddenly appear below and his face changed drastically. “Boss, there are soldiers outside.”
The group of people who had been enjoying their game of mahjong immediately put down their tiles, their faces turning grim.
Faced with the military, such a formidable force, they couldn’t help but feel some fear. “Soldiers?”
“Yes, six soldiers, one of them’s a woman,” a slightly heavier man walked to the window, opened the blinds, and frowned as he looked at the situation below.
Hearing the men’s conversation outside, the girl locked in the storage room with a dazed look in her eyes seemed to have found hope.
Military personnel had arrived. Could this mean they were going to be rescued?
The man who had awakened his powers also hurried to the window.
After clearly seeing the situation outside, he quickly turned around and told the man by the warehouse door, “Watch them carefully and don’t make any noise.”
He understood that, although he had awakened his powers and could easily deal with five or six regular people, the ones outside were clearly not ordinary. They looked much stronger than regular soldiers, exuding a tremendous pressure.
There were six of them in total, which made him feel like they were a special forces team.
Facing them, even his group of ten or so people probably wouldn’t stand a chance.
“Help…!” A girl with a ponytail, realizing that this was their only chance to be saved, stood up and screamed, rushing toward the window.
Another girl immediately followed, shouting for help as well. Faced with their only hope for survival, they couldn’t back down.
A man with power abilities quickly approached the warehouse and swung his hand full force at the girl.
The girl was hit, her head spinning, her face swelling up instantly, and blood began to trickle from the corner of her mouth.
The other man, taking advantage of the situation, kicked her into the warehouse, then slapped the man guarding the door. “Damn it, you useless fool, you couldn’t even watch a woman.”
The man who was slapped could only apologize with a bow while hurriedly closing the warehouse door.
The man who had slapped the girl began to beat the two girls who were begging for help inside the warehouse. “Damn, you’re asking for it.”
After being repeatedly struck, the two girls collapsed onto the ground, unable to control themselves.
The man continued kicking them viciously.
The other girls were terrified and huddled together, crying as they clung to each other.
The five girls could only watch helplessly as the two girls who had cried for help were beaten, too afraid to move for fear of drawing attention to themselves.
Only when the two girls were too injured to make a sound did the man spit and stop.
“I heard a woman’s cries for help,” said Qiangzi, his hearing always the sharpest.
Nan Muran glanced at the supermarket. “On the third floor of the supermarket, there are sixteen men with homemade weapons. They’re holding seven girls captive.
The cries you heard were from two of those girls.”
“What?” Chen Dong’s face changed immediately, and his first instinct was to rush upstairs to rescue them.
However, Nan Muran continued, “About 400 meters ahead, in the university’s library, there’s a special forces team of twelve people, protecting several researchers.
They’re surrounded by five level-two zombies. The zombies in the area gathered there because of a mutated zombie’s call.”
Eagle and Wang Qiang, upon hearing Nan Muran’s explanation, looked at Si Ye in unison. “Captain.”
Nan Muran remained silent because she understood that they wanted to go rescue the people. “The zombies surrounding the area are no fewer than a thousand. Your current abilities can barely handle two level-two zombies.
But there are five level-two zombies over there, along with over a thousand regular zombies.”
“Then we have to save them,” Chen Dong said without hesitation.
“Can you help us? Tell us more about the situation in the library,” Si Ye looked at Nan Muran, waiting for her decision.
In this situation, he couldn’t selfishly ask her to join them, but he also couldn’t just watch his comrades be trapped without doing anything.
Nan Muran looked at him quietly for a while. “Okay, I’ll help you save them.”
She then took out paper and a pen from her backpack and sketched out the situation in the library and its layout.
“Level-two zombies are noticeably faster, so be careful. Don’t get hurt.” She handed the sketch to Si Ye and gave him a serious warning.
“Nan Jie, you…” Chen Dong was visibly stunned upon hearing Nan Muran’s words. Was this their way of parting?
Nan Muran looked at Si Ye. “This backup bag has enough weapons. Wu Ge and I will wait here. If you can return safely, we’ll all go back together.
If you can’t return, Wu Ge and I will leave on our own.”
“Ran Ran…” Even Jia Wu, who was nearby, was stunned.
Si Ye, however, just smiled and took the backpack from her, his tone as usual. “Okay.”
Eagle looked at the calm Nan Muran, his gaze turning complex.
He realized that he couldn’t understand Nan Muran, who was not that old, and he had no idea what she was thinking.
