After the group descended from the mountain and exited the school’s walls, they gradually approached the commercial street.
Nan Muran directly used Xiaobai and Xiaoliu’s branches to block the zombies who had been relentlessly following their scent, guiding them away from the two sides of the commercial street: “You all need to leave here.”
Si Ye, upon hearing her words, froze for a moment.
Nan Muran, feeling that she was about to exhaust herself, started to show impatience in her tone: “Why are you still stunned? Let them go.”
“Hunting Dog, pull your team back.
Eagle, Qiangzi, Chen Dong, protect the professors and withdraw from the commercial street.
Pick up the pace,” Si Ye said, noticing the strain in Nan Muran’s response. His tone grew more anxious.
In this situation, leaving these people behind would only slow them down.
Once the Li Jian Team and a few researchers had safely driven away, Nan Muran immediately retrieved her off-road vehicle from her space: “Wu Ge, start the vehicle and plan the route. Avoid the two commercial streets at the front.”
“Got it.” Jia Wu quickly got in and started the engine.
He understood that Nan Muran didn’t want the car near the front commercial streets because of the safety of the young women inside the supermarket.
By the time she sat in the car, Nan Muran felt that her last bit of mental energy had nearly been used up.
As Jia Wu stepped on the gas pedal, the off-road vehicle swiftly sped off. At the same time, Xiaoliu and Xiaobai returned to Nan Muran’s wrist.
The massive group of zombies that had been blocked by Xiaoliu and Xiaobai and had been distracted by the vehicle’s noise started to chase after the car as it moved forward.
Once the car was far enough away and the attraction of the sound faded, the zombies began aimlessly wandering the streets again.
Sitting in the backseat, Nan Muran let out a long breath, feeling completely drained, unable to even sit upright. She slumped weakly in her seat.
Si Ye reached out and held her, his voice filled with concern: “Nan Muran, what’s wrong?”
Nan Muran glanced at him with a bit of irritation: “Tired, can’t you see?”
“I’m sorry.” Si Ye apologized instinctively as he looked at Nan Muran’s exhausted appearance.
Looking at her in this state, he suddenly realized that in this apocalypse, where survival was already difficult enough, some of his views needed to change.
Seeing him silently filled with guilt, Nan Muran’s gaze turned sly: “If you let me rest for a while, it would be much more helpful than saying sorry.”
Si Ye hesitated for a moment, his eyes flickering before he finally reached out to support her, pulling her into his arms.
Nan Muran took the opportunity to find a more comfortable position, closing her eyes and muttering faintly, “Don’t make me get up, I’m really too tired.”
Not only had she exhausted all her plant-based and psychic abilities, but even Xiaoliu and Xiaobai were completely drained. This battle had truly pushed them to their limits.
This feeling of helplessness, of not being able to protect herself, was something she had never experienced since her rebirth, but she was sure it would never happen again.
After driving for several kilometers along the winding mountain road, Jia Wu finally saw Liu Jun and the others waiting by the side of the road.
“The sky is getting dark. Let’s head to the safe house ahead,” Liu Jun communicated with Jia Wu immediately, his tone respectful.
Today, everyone’s lives had been saved by Nan Muran, and they needed to find a proper opportunity to thank her.
Jia Wu glanced back at Nan Muran, who was already asleep.
He knew that taking Nan Muran away from the main group wasn’t the best choice under these circumstances, so he agreed: “You lead the way.”
The three cars lined up and drove along the winding mountain road.
Occasionally, a few scattered zombies appeared, but they weren’t a problem for Jia Wu. The special forces team up front had already handled them.
Jia Wu suddenly spoke: “Wolf, do you know? This is the first time I’ve seen Muran like this since I met her.”
Si Ye’s gaze darkened as he looked ahead at Jia Wu: “Just say it.”
“I don’t know what you and she have gone through, and I don’t care. All I want is for Muran and us to live well in this world where survival is already so hard.
She may risk her life for the things she wants to do, and we will always accompany her.
But she should never risk her life for anyone else’s saintly ideas.”
“I understand.” For the first time in twenty-six years of being used to controlling everything, Si Ye felt a sense of confusion.
Jia Wu understood the concerns in Si Ye’s heart and knew the difficulty: “Wolf, no matter who you were or what beliefs you had before,
everything has been turned upside down in this apocalypse.
It’s time to make a decision, for yourself and for the people who care about you.”
Si Ye stared at Nan Muran, who was asleep, and fell into a long silence, affected by Jia Wu’s words.
The safe house set up by the military was located at the foot of the southern mountain in the western district, within a retro-style resort villa.
There were several resorts at the base of the entire mountain range, each with its own unique style. Unfortunately, after three months of the apocalypse, what was once a charming place had now become barren.
Fortunately, the resort was located on higher ground, and the inside had already been cleared by the responsible personnel, making things a lot easier.
As the car came to a stop, Nan Muran, who had been resting against Si Ye, suddenly woke up.
She glanced at the unfamiliar environment outside, her voice filled with confusion: “Why aren’t we going back to the mid-mountain villa?”
“The commercial street is too far from the mid-mountain villa, and traveling at night is too complicated.
This is a military safe house, and it has fire coverage within a two-kilometer radius, so it will be safer here,” Si Ye explained from behind her.
Nan Muran nodded. After dark, zombies’ hearing became more sensitive.
Now that mutated zombies had started appearing and her powers were depleted, finding a safe place to stop was indeed the best option.
When it was time to assign rooms, Jia Wu directly requested a suite.
Although there were only two suites, no one expressed dissatisfaction.
Everyone knew that if it weren’t for Nan Muran’s appearance, none of them would have made it out alive today.
“Muran, you stay inside, I’ll sleep in the living room.”
“Okay.” Nan Muran nodded and quickly agreed.
The suite’s living room had a long sofa, coffee table, and cabinet.
The TV and fridge were useless, and the power system only powered the lights, which had been replaced with incandescent bulbs.
Inside, there was a bed, a cabinet, and a single sofa.
Nan Muran immediately took out sheets and blankets from her space, made up the bed, and then returned to the living room to have dinner.
“Let’s have self-heating hotpot.” Since there were many people outside and the situation was complicated, Jia Wu said.
Nan Muran nodded and took out a row of self-heating hotpots from the Lao family: “Eight different flavors.”
Jia Wu helplessly smiled, knowing she couldn’t stand even the smallest inconvenience.
He chuckled as he opened all the packaging, adding water.
He also prepared chopsticks and disposable bowls: “All done, just wait and eat.”
When the hotpot was ready, Nan Muran, too hungry to wait, ate quickly.
Her nose was sweating in the cold weather.
Jia Wu smiled and took out wet wipes from his bag, placing them next to her.
“Muran, did you notice the few researchers that the special forces protected today?”
