“It looks like there are quite a few coffee beans here,” Nan Muran said, looking up at the rows of coffee cans on the counter, clearly surprised.
She stepped forward, picked one up, and opened it. Her delicate brows furrowed as she quickly wrinkled her nose from the awful smell. She opened several more cans, all of which had moldy coffee beans from being soaked in water previously.
Jia Wu and Eagle exchanged a glance and sighed in indulgence, halting their movements as they observed Nan Muran, who looked disappointed.
Si Ye scanned the surroundings before opening a door to a corner storage room. Inside, there were rows of cabinets. He gestured for Jia Wu and Eagle to come over and help.
The three of them moved all the coffee beans from the storage room, carefully checked each one, and then sorted them.
In the end, they selected only the sealed coffee beans that hadn’t been damaged by the water.
They placed them all in front of Nan Muran. “We’ve checked them thoroughly. These are all fine and can be stored.”
Nan Muran smiled, her lips curving up as she effortlessly stored the entire pile of coffee beans into her space. She then looked up and saw an entire wall filled with various coffee-related items.
In the dim light, the unique coffee cups caught her attention, making her want to hold them forever.
“They’re beautiful,” she commented.
“If there’s space, you can store them too,” Si Ye said, smiling at the various mugs with different designs and patterns. For someone like Nan Muran, who studied art, these items were indeed attractive.
Nan Muran waved her hand, unhesitatingly storing the entire wall of cups, along with the cup racks, into her space.
Seeing her interest, Si Ye turned to Eagle and Jia Wu. “Shall we head up further? It’s also a good opportunity to find a way out.”
The two nodded without objection.
The third floor of the building had been a fast-food restaurant before the apocalypse. The items stored inside had all gone bad, and the foul stench made it unbearable. Needless to say, there wasn’t much to collect.
On the fourth floor, the group saw rows of comfortable massage chairs. Their eyes immediately lit up. Was this a bathhouse? Sort of, but not quite.
“Should we rest here for a while?” Eagle’s desire was clearly visible in his gaze.
“Perfect. Let’s have a meal here. Afterward, we can rest for a bit and then look for a way out,” Nan Muran suggested. She had only eaten a piece of bread in the car and was both tired and hungry, so she could imagine how the others felt.
Si Ye glanced at Jia Wu and Eagle. Seeing they had no objections, he nodded. “Alright, we’ll eat here.”
With their agreement, Nan Muran took out two camping lanterns from her space.
Seeing her actions, Si Ye and the others intuitively stepped forward, drawing the curtains around the room tightly, leaving no gaps. The space instantly became pitch-black.
Only then did Nan Muran turn on the lanterns.
The surrounding area became bright, but the outside remained unaware.
Jia Wu and Eagle worked quickly to move the tables and clean four chairs.
Nan Muran, along with Si Ye, arranged four massage chairs closer together for everyone to rest in later.
“Today has been a fruitful day, let’s order food,” she said.
Si Ye nodded. “Let’s have noodles, something simple.”
“Lanzhou beef noodles,” Eagle quickly decided, understanding Si Ye’s meaning.
“Fried noodles,” Jia Wu followed up.
“Five-in-one mixed noodles,” Si Ye looked at Nan Muran.
“I’ll have noodles with you guys, and add a vegetarian platter, a meat platter, and three stir-fried dishes,” Nan Muran quickly pulled food from her space and placed it on the table.
Eagle, eating his favorite beef noodles along with the vegetarian platter and stir-fried dishes, felt much better. “This is really happiness.”
Nan Muran, eating her five-in-one mixed noodles, smiled but didn’t speak. She hadn’t liked carbohydrates much in the past, but since the apocalypse, her taste seemed to have changed, and she had become a carb enthusiast.
After quickly eating and drinking to satisfaction, the four of them found a massage chair and lay down.
“We’ll leave in half an hour,” Si Ye said, assessing the situation. He estimated that Chen Shuhan and his group would arrive in about an hour.
To avoid a confrontation and escalating things to an irreparable point, they would need to leave quickly.
After setting an alarm, Nan Muran instructed the treant to stay alert for any movement outside.
About twenty minutes later, the treant sensed danger approaching from a distance. It quickly touched Nan Muran: “Ren Ren, there are over thirty awakened ones approaching the city.”
The news woke Nan Muran up, and she felt helpless. “Someone’s chasing us.”
The three who had pretended to nap immediately opened their eyes and quickly packed their bags.
Looking at them, Nan Muran suddenly realized that she was the only one who had actually fallen asleep from the start. After thinking for a moment, she said, “I’m not that tired, I can keep going.”
Hearing her words, the three of them smiled.
“It’s fine, we still have time to leave,” Si Ye said, reaching out to help tidy up her slightly messy hair, smiling gently.
Jia Wu handed her a bottle of water. “Wake up a bit, don’t catch a cold.”
Nan Muran knew they truly cared for her, so she didn’t pretend. She took the water and drank a sip. “The treant said there are over thirty awakened ones, they should be with Chen Shuhan.”
“We’ve dealt with a dozen or so special-type awakened ones today. The rest are just regular ones, and with the zombies below, that should be enough to occupy them.”
After packing everything, the group continued upward, climbing to the fifteenth floor.
Following the skybridge between two staircases, they reached the building across. Nan Muran then signaled Xiao Liu, Xiao Bai, and the treant to build a plant bridge for everyone in the stairwell.
Late at night, the sky above Lan City presented a strange sight—four figures walking among the tall buildings of Lan City, as if walking on flat ground.
“They really do look kind of cool,” Eagle said, looking down at the vast darkness below and feeling the cold wind cutting through, unable to resist commenting.
Xiao Liu: “I hate being stepped on by anyone other than Ren Ren and Ye Ye.”
Xiao Bai: “Me too.”
Treant: “Hypocrites.”
Nan Muran could tell the little guys weren’t happy, so she reminded Eagle, “Hurry up, we’ll be caught soon.”
Over twenty minutes after they left, Chen Shuhan and his group arrived outside Lan City, along with Old Leader Lin and reinforcements from an enhanced battalion.
“My people won’t enter the city at night,” Old Leader Lin said firmly. The reason he came was to stop this from happening, and he wouldn’t back down.
Chen Shuhan was speechless.
Ouyang Yun, who had been holding in her anger, finally exploded: “Old Leader, don’t forget what Captain Lin said in his letter. We’re working together to complete the mission assigned to us.”
Old Leader Lin snorted coldly. “This is the apocalypse. Locally, and within the military, everyone has been acting in their own interests for a long time. Besides, I haven’t received any orders from the Beijing base.
This time, I’m helping you all because of Lin Weicheng’s letter, explaining the circumstances. But all of this is not worth my people risking their lives.”
