“Sister, thank you.” Liu Mei looked at Nan Muran, who had finished packing, her tone full of gratitude.
Nan Muran smiled lightly. “When I first saw you, surrounded by those five handsome men, I instinctively thought you were a wild and reckless woman. But it turns out you’ve been living in such a complicated way?”
“Complicated?” Liu Mei looked at Nan Muran, surprised.
“Right now, it’s the end of the world. Don’t measure your current situation by outdated moral standards. Look at this ancient county, it probably had a population of over 100,000, right? Where did they all go?
In the end times, staying alive is the only standard.” Nan Muran looked at Liu Mei and said, emphasizing each word.
Liu Mei looked into Nan Muran’s clear eyes and suddenly felt relieved.
All the inner turmoil and guilt she had felt for so long seemed meaningless at that moment. She felt a sudden release. “Thank you.”
Nan Muran gave her a big smile, slightly pursing her lips. “We’re leaving now.”
Watching the Xingci Squad leave, Liu Mei still wore a charming smile. “Until we meet again.”
After the figures of the five adults and one child disappeared from her view, Liu Mei turned back to the five super-powered handsome men behind her. “Alright, it’s time for us to pack up and move.”
The unchanging neon lights of the Eternal Night Hotel still shone brightly. Since the end of the world began, Liu Mei had never entered the Eternal Night Hotel with such firm steps.
Nan Muran had once said something she deeply agreed with: before the apocalypse, life was already hard enough, let alone now. From now on, she just needed to survive and live freely, no matter what form that took.
“It’s almost a three-hour drive from Guxian to Ning City. If you’re tired, you can sleep in the car,” Eagle said, driving.
Jia Wu frowned. “It’s only just past twelve.”
Since they were all exhausted yesterday, they didn’t get up until ten today. Although Liu Mei had treated them to lunch, it felt more like breakfast to them.
There was no fatigue left.
Sitting in the middle, Xiao Qi grinned but didn’t speak. He also missed his grandpa and the others, but since he knew they were safe in the base, there was no need to worry.
“Eagle, who else is at your home?” Nan Muran asked softly after thinking for a moment.
In the end times, surviving was hard. If there were only elderly people at home, the outcome might not be good.
“My parents, my older brother and his wife, and a nephew. Speaking of which, I haven’t been home in three and a half years,” Eagle replied, his tone noticeably softer when he spoke about his family.
As a soldier, protecting the country and guarding borders made it difficult to stay with family, especially for the Blood Wolves. It wasn’t unusual to be away for a year or two.
Eagle’s home was in Ning City, near Mount Ling. By 4 PM that day, they had successfully arrived at the outskirts of Ning City.
Ning City was not small, with a population of around 2.5 million.
After the apocalypse, Ning City had also fallen into decay, with the entire city engulfed in waves of zombies. Looking at the streets, crowded with aimlessly wandering zombies, everyone sighed softly.
No matter where they went these days, they always encountered massive groups of zombies, many of whom were once living people in the early days of the apocalypse. And the more zombies there were in the city, the fewer survivors there were.
Eagle, seeing the scene in front of him, fell silent, his heart racing with worry and growing unease.
Nan Muran, sitting in the back, immediately turned to Eagle. “Eagle, which direction is your home? Is there any way to bypass the city on the outer road?”
“My home is across Mount Ling. I’ll take the bypass around the city,” Eagle quickly turned the car around, changing direction.
There were still zombies roaming the bypass, but fortunately, they were scattered.
The military-grade Hummer was not only large but also powerful. As the vehicle sped past the zombies, it was smooth sailing.
When they got closer to Eagle’s home, they stopped the car at a more concealed spot.
After storing the car in Nan Muran’s space, the five of them started approaching the multi-story community where Eagle’s home was.
This was the family housing area of Ning City’s largest electromechanical factory, so it was quite large, with a total of thirty-six buildings.
The moment they entered the community, Nan Muran began to use her spiritual power to scan the entire area. After a moment, she couldn’t help but frown.
“This is strange. I don’t sense any life force.” Nan Muran said softly, glancing at Eagle.
But Eagle instantly understood what she meant by “life force.”
After a moment of daze, he didn’t hesitate and ran towards his building. He reached the front door, but he hesitated, too scared to take another step.
“You have the key to your house,” Si Ye said, noticing he wasn’t moving. He sighed lightly, reminding him.
Having been comrades for almost seven years, Si Ye knew Eagle’s feelings for his family very well. He couldn’t even imagine what Eagle would be like if something happened to his family.
Eagle took out the key from around his neck, which hadn’t been used in over three years, and gathered his courage to open the door.
The sunlight shone on the tiles of the living room, and the entire house was clean and tidy. Even the plants on the balcony were well cared for. It was clear that someone had been living here and paying attention to detail.
“Why is no one home?” Eagle sighed in relief and checked several rooms, but found no one inside.
“The door is still locked. And if we look at the situation inside, we can tell this is good news. Don’t scare yourself.” Jia Wu patted his shoulder, offering comfort.
Xiao Qi sat still for a moment, then sighed lightly. He could see the situation in the house over the next 24 hours and confirmed that there would be no change in either the condition or the number of people.
Eagle understood the situation from his reaction.
“Should we go out and look for them?
I’ll have Xiao Liu ask the surrounding plants to gather some information.” Nan Muran suggested, noticing Eagle’s confused expression.
Eagle seemed startled, surprised by Nan Muran’s suggestion. “Sister Nan, thank you.”
“Don’t be so polite with me. Let’s go downstairs,” Nan Muran said directly.
The three of them went downstairs again. There were plenty of plants in the community, and with the help of the plant mutant tree-man and Xiao Liu, they quickly gathered information.
Xiao Liu: “Ran Ran, the big tree and the little grass said that the people who survived in this community left yesterday afternoon. They went up the mountain across the street.”
Nan Muran frowned upon hearing this. It had already been over 24 hours since yesterday afternoon. If they had gone into the mountains, things were likely to end badly. “Why would they go up the mountain?”
With plant and animal mutations, and danger lurking everywhere, the mountains were far more dangerous than the city.
Tree-man: “They went to find people.”
Hearing this, Nan Muran looked towards Mount Ling. “We have to enter the mountains.”
“Enter Mount Ling?” Eagle asked, unable to believe it.
