Having some business experience under her belt, Lin Xi’s mind had been influenced by her husband. She didn’t consider Wang Qian’s actions to be mere playfulness. She acknowledged the girl’s talent, “Qian Qian, since you say so, I’ll join you in the purchase. When my husband returns, we’ll assess the situation together. Once we have a location in mind, we’ll send you a telegram. I have a phone number here; write it down for future contact. However, let’s not inform our family members for now. I’m still unsure about contacting them.”
Wang Qian nodded in agreement. Lin Xi knew there was a knot in her heart that she couldn’t untangle, so she decided to wait and let time work its magic, hoping she would eventually find peace.
Lin Xi had no doubt that Wang Qian would have the means to repay her in the future. Taking her goods up North to sell would surely yield profits. She believed in Wang Qian’s intellect and foresaw potential success beyond just making a bit of money on the side.
Their conversations evolved into more mature discussions as Lin Xi treated Wang Qian like an adult, fostering a strong connection between them.
The following day, after purchasing spare parts with Wang Zhenhe, Lin Xi accompanied the father and daughter to enjoy two days of sightseeing in Guangzhou, buying gifts to take back home.
As they boarded the train, Lin Xi handed them a bag, instructing them to open it after the train departed. Wang Qian couldn’t help but smile when she saw the thoughtful contents—a variety of food and clothing items for the family, along with exquisite mechanical wristwatches, each tailored to suit the recipients’ tastes. This thoughtful gesture left an impression on Wang Qian.
Reflecting on the generosity, Wang Zhenhe muttered to himself, “We owe her big this time. Qian Qian, how do we repay such kindness?”
Wang Qian chuckled, “Dad, don’t worry. Just accept it gratefully. I’ll repay this kindness. If she listens to me, I’ll ensure she becomes prosperous.”
If Lin Xi were to invest in more properties, it could lead to substantial wealth in the future, surpassing the value of the wristwatches by far.
Upon their return home, the Chinese New Year was fast approaching, and Zhang Lan and the three children were eagerly anticipating their arrival.
“Mom, we’re back!” Wang Qian called out as they reached the doorstep.
Hearing her voice, Zhang Lan and the children rushed out. “Finally, you’re back! We were worried you wouldn’t make it before the New Year. Come inside quickly, it’s cold out here.”
Helping with the bags, Wang Qian and Wang Zhenhe hurried inside. The family gathered around the kang as they discussed their journey south. Wang Zhenhe presented the gifts he had brought, unveiling each one. When Mingyuan saw the watch meant for him, his eyes widened in amazement. “Wow, Dad, you’ve struck it rich! This is quite expensive but so beautiful. I love it.”
Displaying each watch, Wang Zhenhe chuckled, “Son, I can barely keep up with all this wealth. This is a gift from your Aunt Xiu li.”
Upon hearing Xiu Li’s name, everyone paused to listen as Wang Zhenhe explained Xiu Li’s involvement and requested they keep it confidential.
“It’s best not to spread the word. Xiu Li prefers to keep her affairs private. We were fortunate to have met Xiu Li; otherwise, we wouldn’t have secured such good prices for our merchandise,” Wang Zhenhe emphasized.
Seeing the watches on their father/Uncle and sister’s wrists, Mingyuan and his siblings/cousins instantly took a liking to them. “Bro, after the New Year, let’s head into the city to sell goods. With Yang Nuo and the others, we can make some good money this time,” Mingyuan suggested enthusiastically.
The family unanimously agreed on the goal of earning money. Zhang Lan gifted her daughter and son with the watches, feeling a twinge of regret. “These watches look great. Xuan, Mingcheng, last time you went to college, I couldn’t buy you watches. Thanks to Aunt Xiu Li, this makes up for my shortfall. With these watches, you can easily keep track of time.”
Mingyuan, delighted with his own watch, examined it under the light with glee. After satisfying his excitement, he took it off and handed it to Zhang Lan. “Mom, please keep mine and my sister’s watches safe. Give them to us when we enter university. No one in our class wears watches; it’s better not to draw attention. Just give me an electronic watch for now.”
Wang Zhenhe and Zhang Lan looked at their son with approval, realizing that their child had matured and understood the importance of making the right decisions.
Wang Zhenhe tousled his son’s short hair and had everyone try on the clothes Lin Xi had bought. The sizes were just right and fit everyone well.
Zhang Lan prepared hot water for her daughter and herself to bathe. While accompanying her daughter for a bath, Wang Qian brought up the idea of buying a house in the South. Zhang Lan, recognizing her daughter’s tendency to be adventurous, didn’t have strong feelings about it. However, she acknowledged that so far, everything Wang Qian had done seemed to have a rationale behind it.
“Qian Qian, go ahead and buy the house. Saving money is also a good idea. We can sell it in the future if needed. The property won’t go anywhere. This time, handle the house purchase in your name. It’s best for our family members to have separate ownership. Having everything under your father’s name isn’t ideal. Eventually, it will all be yours, so there’s no need for extra procedures. As for your brother and sister, once our family’s situation improves, I’ll find ways to help them too,” Zhang Lan advised Wang Qian.
Although Wang Qian didn’t say much in response to her mother, she had already made up her mind. She was determined to share her wealth with her siblings once she succeeded.
After washing her daughter, Zhang Lan helped her get dressed before coming out. Wang Zhenhe then bathed with his son, and Mingyuan helped scrub his father’s back.
Once the three children were asleep(Mingyuan and his 2 cousins), Wang Zhenhe and Zhang Lan entered the space with their daughter. They relaxed on the comfortable bed, feeling a sense of contentment. Zhang Lan attended to the plants inside, while Wang Qian continued to tinker with her antique items.
After satisfying their curiosity, they left the space and chose to sleep inside for the night.
The next morning, Wang Qian awoke to her mother calling her, promptly getting up to guide both of them out.
In the morning, Zhang Lan sent Mingyuan and Wang Qian to deliver some food brought back from the South to their siblings and the elderly at the old wang couple at home.
Even though Zhang Lan avoided facing Zhu Qiyu, she was generous when it came to providing them with food. Wang Qian admired her mother for this quality, recognizing that she lacked the same level of generosity.
When delivering the items, Wang Qian and Mingyuan had agreed not to mention they had been to Guangzhou, simply stating the gifts were from friends in the South. Initially, Zhang Lan and the others found it amusing, but later realized the necessity of discretion. Some matters should be kept low-key to avoid misinterpretation, preventing others from assuming they had earned a lot of money.
Upon their return, the family prepared to slaughter the pig they had been waiting to butcher. Wang Zhenhe instructed Mingyuan to inform Yang Mingxuan and Cong Wei to bring their families over for a meal the following Sunday, as they could clean the intestines the day before.
The skilled butcher efficiently slaughtered the pig, and Wang Juan arrived with her daughter to assist. The sisters rarely had the opportunity to sit down and chat, so they took advantage of this moment to catch up, chatting about various matters as they worked.
Observing the cheerful trio, Wang Juan and Zhang Lan shared a smile.
“Sister, someone has introduced a potential match for our Mingshan. I’ve met the girl and found her to be nice. Her family has a good reputation. Your older brother even inquired about them. When the time comes, I’ll ask you to have a look as well. As the aunt, you can help oversee things. I might have misjudged someone previously,” Wang Juan mentioned to Zhang Lan.
Wang Juan was also concerned about the marriages in the family due to the mischievous nature of her two younger daughters. Therefore, she emphasized the importance of thoroughly understanding the background of potential spouses. She was determined not to agree to a union if the prospective partner’s family background was questionable, as she feared inviting trouble into the family.
During lunchtime, Zhang Lan invited Wang Deshan and Wang Zhenhai, for a meal, demonstrating a gesture of goodwill regardless of the quantity.
The next day, Mingyuan arrived with Cong Yang’s family, traveling in a large truck. Despite their rosy cheeks from the cold, everyone was excited.
“Aunt, we’re here again,” they greeted Zhang Lan.
As Cong Fei and Yang Jian got off the truck, they sweetly called out, and Zhang Lan welcomed them warmly, ushering everyone inside to warm up.
“You two, were you eagerly anticipating Aunt’s pig slaughtering event? If your uncle hadn’t delayed us, we would have called you over earlier. Hurry up and come sit on the kang,” Zhang Lan remarked.
After warming up on the kang, Ge Yun and Zhao Ru began assisting with tasks. Having experience in rural areas, they had no trouble cooking. The women gathered in the kitchen, engaged in lively conversations.
Wang Zhenhe, Yang Mingxuan, and Cong Wei sat on the kang, sipping tea and discussing their experiences from their trip down South.
Xiaoyue and Xiaomei, having warmed up on the kang, wanted to join in, but were persuaded by Wang Qian and her sister to stay put. The three women below were already bustling about, and adding more hands would only cause chaos. Zhang Lan had already made all the necessary preparations, ready for the next step of cooking the blood sausages.
“Grandpa, how have you been feeling lately?” asked Xiaoyue.
When the patriarch of the Cong family saw Wang Qian, he was delighted despite having few teeth left. “Girl, that honey you got me has given me strength. I can move around, take care of myself. I’ve been drinking it regularly. If there are any good remedies in the future, think of your grandpa. I want to live long enough to see my great-grandchild born.”
While the old man’s wish was heartfelt, Wang Qian wasn’t sure if her honey could fulfill his desire.
As the children warmed up on the kang, they couldn’t sit still and insisted on going outside to play. Zhang Lan didn’t stop them, and Mingyuan took the kids to the river to play with ice sleds. Cong Fei and Yang Jian had seen this before but never had the chance to try it. They were eager to seize the opportunity this time.
