“Ah, little girl, we finally meet. Let’s go inside,” Qi Wanru pulled Wang Qian’s hand and led her into the house, with Wang Zhenhe and Zuo Chen assisting Zuo Xiangqian inside.
As Zuo Xiangqian sat down with assistance, Wang Qian realized the extent of his poor health. He was visibly struggling even after just those few steps, and his complexion was concerning. Despite being a handsome middle-aged man, he seemed to be prematurely aging.
“Uncle, why didn’t you mention your health earlier? We could have sent you some good things. It wouldn’t have come to this state. Here, these supplements are for you. Give them a try, and if they help, I’ll send you more,” Wang Qian offered, concerned about Zuo Xiangqian’s well-being.
Accepting the items handed to her, Qi Wanru was astonished. She recognized the honey, a good product she had tried before, but the royal jelly was new to her. However, it was the two enormous ginseng roots that truly surprised her.
She was no stranger to valuable items. To her knowledge, this appeared to be wild mountain ginseng, aged for a substantial period to grow so large. It emitted a unique and fragrant aroma characteristic of aged ginseng. These two fresh ginseng roots, regardless of their specific age, seemed to hold considerable value. Considering the Wang family’s circumstances, purchasing such expensive items seemed unlikely. She wondered where they had acquired such precious items. Nonetheless, these ginseng roots were precisely what they needed. With these two ginseng roots, there was hope for Zuo Xiangqian’s condition.
“Qianqian, are these ginseng roots aged or new? Zhenhe, this gift must have cost a fortune,” she marveled at the ginseng roots, filled with delight.
“Uncle Wang, you truly are our family’s savior. My father’s health requires precisely this type of ginseng. We’ve searched high and low for aged ginseng but to no avail. This gift gives hope for my father’s recovery,” Zuo Yan expressed gratefully.
Zuo Xiangqian calmly examined the ginseng roots. “Zhenhe, I can’t accept these ginseng roots. They are too valuable. I don’t want you burdening yourself with debt for buying ginseng for me. My illness isn’t severe, and with proper care, I can recover.”
Seeing the misunderstanding, Wang Zhenhe hastened to clarify, “Brother, please don’t misunderstand. These ginseng roots were discovered by our child in the mountains. We didn’t purchase them. They are precisely what you need for your health. Regardless of their value, such precious items should be used for our own family members. To me, they would just be wasted. Please accept them and give them a try. If they indeed help cure your illness, they will have served their purpose.”
Wang Zhenhe was sincere in his insistence to Zuo Xiangqian. In his daughter’s treasure trove, there were more ginseng roots, and he feared they might go to waste if not used. Additionally, each year, she planted ginseng seeds, leaving him with doubts about finding space for all of them. It seemed more practical to use them now.
Zuo Xiangcheng held Wang Zhenhe’s hand, slightly trembling, and emotionally said, “Brother, what can an elder brother like me say in return? You’re right, we are family. Ever since my parents moved into your home, we’ve been family. I’ll accept these ginseng roots.”
Wang Qian explained the usage and storage methods of royal jelly and ginseng to Zuo Xiangqian. They stayed at the Zuo residence overnight before bidding farewell. Before leaving, they emphasized that if the ginseng roots were used up, they should be informed, as Wang Zhenhe would find a way to search for more in the mountains.
Unaware of the specifics, Zuo Xiangqian believed their mountain truly produced ginseng.
Satisfied with their property inspection, Wang Zhenhe found the factory spacious and the three residential buildings in good condition. Even if they didn’t reside there, renting them out would bring in substantial income.
After completing their tasks in the south, they returned by car. Zhang Lan’s store in the city now had an abundance of southern fruits at reasonable prices. This attracted a surge of customers, boosting sales of both fruits and electronic products.
Wang Zhenhe wholesaled the remaining fruits to small vendors, not only recouping their investment but also earning a significant profit. This success encouraged Wang Zhenhe to plan another trip to the south in the future.
With the help of Yang Nuo and others in the city, Zhang Lan and Wang Zhenhe took Mingyuan back home for a visit. They had entrusted household matters to their sister-in-law and neighbors, feeling guilty about it. They returned home with gifts, accompanied by their family.
Zhang Lan and her elder daughter were busy tidying up the house, while Mingyuan took his younger siblings to pick the remaining fruits at the back to sell in the city. Wang Qian, observant as ever, noticed Wang Mei and Wang Zhi hurrying over, looking displeased, probably just getting off a car.
As Wang Mei and her sister entered the house, Wang Zhi, holding Zhu Qiyu, began to cry uncontrollably. “Mom, why is my life so miserable? I can’t go on like this. You have to make a decision for me.”
Confused by Wang Zhi’s sudden outburst, she inspected her child but found no physical harm. Furrowing her brow, she said, “What are you crying for? Why disrupt your peaceful life? It’s common for couples to argue; it’s nothing that can’t be resolved.”
Wang Zhi, upon hearing her mother, cried even harder. “Mom, you don’t understand. It’s not just about arguments. I can’t bear this life. Do you know why I haven’t had children all these years? I’ve been deceived by Li Changhai, that scoundrel. If I stay with him, I’ll never have children. How can I continue living like this?”
Hearing her daughter’s distressing revelations, Zhu Qiyu sensed that something was amiss. Wang Zhi and Li Changhai had been married for years, and the lack of children had led her to question her daughter’s health. However, today’s revelations were shocking.
Quickly taking Wang Zhi’s hand, she said, “Sweetheart, talk to me and explain what’s going on. Weren’t you happy with this marriage initially? Why are you saying this about him now?”
Wang Mei sneered, “Mom, let me tell you. My brother-in-law had a bad reputation in the past, so to avoid trouble, he had a vasectomy, which is why my sister can’t have children. We didn’t know about this before; we learned through gossip. You better advise Wang Zhi. Decide whether she should stay in this marriage or not.”
Upon hearing this shocking revelation, Zhu Qiyu was devastated. Her beloved youngest daughter had to endure such a fate. Holding her daughter close, she began wailing, “My dear, why is your life so bitter? How could fate be so cruel? How did my precious daughter end up with such a man? How can I go on living like this?”
Overwhelmed with sorrow and anxiety, Zhu Qiyu fainted on the spot. This sudden turn of events frightened both Wang Zhi and Wang Mei. Hastily, they tried to revive her by pinching the pressure point between her eyebrows, hoping to bring her back to consciousness.
Upon returning from work, Wang Zenguo and Ma Fenqing heard crying coming from the house. Alarmed, they rushed to see what had happened. Finding their mother lying unconscious on the kang, with Wang Zhi and Wang Mei in tears, they were taken aback.
Thinking his mother had passed away with her eyes shut, Wang Zenguo started calling out to her in distress. As his mother slowly opened her eyes and saw her son tearfully embracing her, she felt a warmth in her heart. She realized her son truly cared for her, moved by his display of emotions.
“Zenguo, stop crying. I’m still here, don’t cry. Zhi, get some water for me. I feel so weak,” Zhu Qiyu, being elderly, felt drained and sweaty after her fainting spell, leaning on her eldest son’s shoulder.
“Zenguo, being in a high position, how do you plan to handle your sister’s situation?” Zhu Qiyu, sharing Wang Zhi’s situation with her eldest son, was physically exhausted, resting in her son’s embrace.
“Zenguo, that man being a eunuch… This is unacceptable. Zhi, divorce him. You won’t be able to have children with him. He’s left two heirs and continues his ways. No wonder his wife left him. What hope is there in staying with such a person?” Wang Zenguo reacted strongly upon learning the truth.
Understanding her son’s perspective, Zhu Qiyu knew it wouldn’t be easy for a woman to leave one home and enter another. Besides, their village had yet to encounter divorce. If her daughter divorced, it would be a first, potentially leading to gossip. Additionally, after divorce, finding a new partner would be challenging. She couldn’t bear the thought of her daughter marrying into a family where the husband’s previous wife had passed away.
Pondering over the situation, she glanced at her son, the father of a five-year-old child, and asked, “Zenguo, is there no other solution? If Zhi divorces, her life will be difficult. Have you thought about this?”
Wang Zenguo confidently responded, “What’s the problem? After a divorce, she can remarry. Nowadays, it’s acceptable to remarry. Besides, Zhi is independent and won’t be a burden. She won’t have trouble finding a man.”
Zhu Qiyu shook her head at her son’s simplistic view, recognizing his youthfulness. She sighed, closed her eyes, and after contemplating for a while, she asked, “Zhi, how is Li Changhai treating you now? Is he good to you?”
Not fully grasping her mother’s intention, Wang Zhi reflected on her two years of marriage. Li Changhai had treated her decently, allowing her freedom in many aspects. Despite his weakness for women, he didn’t have any other major flaws. However, the fact that he couldn’t father children was a significant concern.
“Mom, overall, he’s been good to me. He doesn’t abuse or mistreat me,” Wang Zhi replied.
Mocking from the sidelines, Wang Mei scoffed, “Little sister, Li Changhai treats you well enough. He provides for you, manages your needs, and doesn’t question your spending. Where will you find a man like him? Look at him; when has he ever argued with you like my husband does with me?”
