Chapter 31: The Unlucky King of Zhennan
In the early morning light, soft rays filtered through the intricately carved window, casting a warm glow over the neatly arranged medicine shelves in the medical hall.
Bai Linglong sat on a low stool, gently caressing her slightly protruding belly, which had been growing for four to five months, patiently guiding Xiaocui in identifying herbs.
Her voice was soft yet carried the certainty of a physician. “Xiaocui, Purple Dangshen is the name of this herb. It is quite helpful in reviving blood and healing wounds.”
Xiaocui, with her round, curious eyes, examined the Purple Dangshen in her hands with a puzzled expression. “Sister, this Purple Dangshen looks quite ordinary. Is it really that miraculous?”
Bai Linglong lightly tapped Xiaocui on the head, smiling as she playfully scolded her. “Don’t underestimate it. This little Purple Dangshen can save lives in critical moments. It’s just like how you see me as a Doctor. If I weren’t here, what would you do when you face difficulties?” That being said, she couldn’t help but laugh at herself.
At that moment, a soft electronic voice suddenly echoed in Bai Linglong’s mind: “Ding dong! The system has issued a mission to save the King of Zhennan, Nangong Yan. Completing this mission will reward you with ten thousand points and a chance to draw a prize.”
Bai Linglong was momentarily taken aback, then the corners of her mouth lifted slightly, a glimmer of excitement flashing in her eyes.
She was well aware of the value of these points and the opportunity for a draw. The medicinal herbs and tools she had exchanged using the system in the past had been incredibly helpful.
If she completed this mission, she might just obtain some valuable treasures.
She murmured to herself, “This King of Zhennan is truly my ‘God of Wealth.’ I didn’t charge him last time I saved him, and now he’s back to offer me points and a chance to draw—he must be saved!”
Before Bai Linglong could think further, the tranquility of the medical hall was abruptly shattered by a series of urgent knocks at the door.
“It’s so early in the morning, who could it be?” Xiaocui set down the herbs in her hands, looking at the door with a puzzled expression.
Bai Linglong frowned slightly, a sense of unease rising within her. She slowly stood up and said, “Let’s go check; it might be an serious patient.”
Just as they reached the door, it was forcefully pushed open. A group of guards in agile attire rushed in, led by the King of Zhennan’s personal guard, An Yi a tall and stern-looking man.
He appeared anxious, and behind him, several guards were carrying the unconscious King Nangong Yan. The King’s face was pale as paper, devoid of color, and his breath was so weak it was almost undetectable.
“Miraculous Doctor, please save our Lord!” An Yi suddenly fell to his knees with a thud, his voice choked with despair and pleading.
Bai Linglong raised her eyes, instantly widening them in shock, and inwardly cursed, Oh no, What a stroke of misfortune, how did he get poisoned again? Didn’t I detoxify him already? It’s only been a few months, and here we are again! Luckily, I brought a veil with me. Luckily, he’s unconscious, or else he would recognize me.
But upon thinking of the mission issued by the system, she quickly steadied her mind and tried to make her voice sound calm. “Bring him inside.”
As she watched the unconscious King Nangong Yan being carried into the inner room, Bai Linglong inwardly contemplated, This system mission came at just the right time; it looks like I need to hurry and save him. I can’t let that ten thousand points and draw slip away. Moreover… he is, after all, the father of my child in my belly. I can’t let him just die like this; otherwise, my child will grow up without a father, and how embarrassing would that be? In modern times, I was an independent woman, and now I can’t let my child be fatherless. If that gets out, I’d be the laughingstock of the town.
