Chen Feng’s body tensed as she suddenly felt herself being lifted off the ground, cradled horizontally in Chu Lingxuan’s arms, prompting a startled “Oh” to escape her lips.
In her mind, she heard the excited voice of the Golden Swallow once again, “Is Mommy dangling in the air, carried by Daddy Chu? Wow, it’s going to be a grand performance! I can’t wait for it… so exciting!”
Chen Feng silently recited, using the little one’s voice as the background music of “I do”, determined not to let it disrupt her emotions.
They had requested water twice during the night, and by the time they woke up, it was early morning. Mrs. Li had called them several times, so they reluctantly got up.
While only the old Marquis was the direct elder of the main house in the Marquis’s residence, and they didn’t strictly adhere to morning and evening rituals, it was still considered embarrassing for the new bride to sleep in late.
After breakfast, they began preparing to return to Chen Feng’s family home. Third Madam had already sent the gift list for the bride’s family to Bamboo Pavilion, and upon inspection, Chen Feng found it quite generous, leaving her very pleased.
Perhaps their minds and bodies were completely fused together, not only understanding each other better but also changing the way they interacted. Chu Lingxuan seemed different today.
His intense gaze made her feel extremely embarrassed, as he continued to display affection openly, not knowing when to hold back. Not only did he hold her hand firmly, but he also stole kisses when the maids weren’t looking…
This left the two maids blushing, and Mrs. Li couldn’t hide her amusement.
In a hushed tone, Mrs. Li whispered to her, “Young Madam is so fortunate, Young Master has her at heart completely. If Young Madam wants to keep Young Master’s heart for longer, take advantage and have a few more children.”
The seemingly well-intentioned words from Mrs. Li left Chen Feng feeling irritated. What did she mean by “keep Young Master’s heart for longer”? Shouldn’t it be for eternity? Besides, how many men truly remain devoted forever, not just in ancient times but even in modern times?
Considering she had the Golden Swallow and the Eleventh Prince (Dabao), even these two treasures she had found, perhaps finding a man for eternity wasn’t entirely impossible…
Upon arriving at the Chen residence, they were greeted at the door by Chen Yulan and the Chen family elder who had carried her into the bridal sedan chair. It seemed that Chen Yu wasn’t there, leaving Chen Feng slightly disappointed.
Approaching them, Chen Yulan bowed to Chu Lingxuan and said, “Brother-in-law, please.”
Chu Lingxuan reciprocated the greeting with a fist salute and exchanged pleasantries with the Chen family elder.
Speaking softly, Chen Yulan told Chen Feng, “Elder sister, Father shed tears when you left, and I’m finding it hard to let go as well.”
Smiling, Chen Feng tousled his hair affectionately and replied, “I’ll miss you all too.”
The newlyweds proceeded to the main hall, where they paid their respects to Chen Shiying and his wife.
Later, Chen Shiying led the men, including two Chen family members and several relatives from the Jiang family, to the front courtyard.
The women invited sisters from the Jiang family to accompany them, having met before and getting along pleasantly, much more so than with the Second Branch of the Chu family. Chen Yuqing and Chen Yuxia even held hands, expressing their reluctance to part.
Midway through, Mrs. Jiang called Chen Feng into another room and asked in a hushed tone, “How is your husband treating you? Are the other members of the Chu family treating you well?”
Chen Feng nodded and replied, “He’s treating me well. Mister Chu, my husband is very kind to me, and the people in the Marquis’s residence are also good, especially Third Aunt, she takes great care of me.”
Mrs. Jiang smiled genuinely and said, “That puts our minds at ease…”
She then mentioned that they would be returning to Dingzhou Prefecture the next day, with Chen Shiying heading to the yamen and Chen Yulan resuming his studies, expressing concern for the household as the old lady and Chen Yuhui were still at home.
Upon hearing they would be leaving the next day, Chen Feng felt a sense of sadness, her eyes welling up with tears.
Mrs. Jiang held her hand and reassured her, “You’ll only be staying for about ten more days. With your husband and Princess Changhua supporting you, you can overcome any challenges. Your father has heard about the incident at the Golden Hall involving the Marquis’s wife, Princess Rong Zhao may cause some trouble when you visit her. Endure it, a little loss of face is nothing compared to a peaceful life in the countryside…”
Her words came from the heart.
Chen Feng nodded. Over the past few days, she had been trying to avoid thinking about Princess Rong Zhao. People like princesses were truly the most unpredictable creatures.
Chen Feng also mentioned that Third Madam would accompany her to the princess’s residence, which further reassured Mrs. Jiang. Smiling, Mrs. Jiang said, “Your father has been worried about this matter, but now that you’ll have many people to protect you, he can set his mind at ease.”
At noon, Chen Shiying led the men back to the main hall’s west wing for lunch, with the men dining in the east wing and the women in the west wing. Though the voices were muffled, they could tell that the men were encouraging Chu Lingxuan to drink.
After lunch and a brief rest, Chen Feng and Chu Lingxuan bid farewell and headed back home.
Before they left, Chen Shiying reminded Chen Feng, “When you return to Dingzhou Prefecture, make sure to visit your family home. Your father wants to have a chat with you.”
With the large gathering that day, he felt it wasn’t the right time to have a lengthy conversation with his daughter.
Since her marriage, Chen Feng seemed to have a stronger emotional bond with Chen Shiying and even Mrs. Jiang. She nodded in acknowledgment.
Having consumed a bit too much alcohol, Chu Lingxuan opted not to ride his horse and instead joined Chen Feng in her carriage, while Autumn and the others rode in another carriage.
As he held Chen Feng’s hand, Chu Lingxuan suggested, “Once things settle down in a couple of days, we’ll invite your uncle Shi’s Family, and Yang Mingyuan’s family for a meal. Let’s go to Hongyun Hotpot Restaurant and explore the bustling prosperity of the capital.”
Uncomfortable with the idea of being carried in a sedan chair, Chen Feng had expressed her discomfort to Chu Lingxuan several times.
Chu Lingxuan reassured her, “It’s normal for your in-laws to arrange things this way. Although you’re not familiar with the Chen family elder, there is still a blood relationship. They might be hesitant to acknowledge your relationship from the bottom of their hearts, but it’s understandable.”
Upon hearing Chu Lingxuan’s words, Chen Feng raised an eyebrow, smiling broadly, and said, “I do miss them a bit now.”
After laughing, her brows furrowed, and she sighed, “I have to go to the princess’s residence tomorrow. I don’t want to go at all.”
“I don’t want to go either.” Chu Lingxuan whispered to her. “But we have to go, it’s a necessary step. Endure it for a little while. With my father and Third Aunt by your side, I’ll also try to bring Prince Rui along. That woman may talk a lot, but she won’t be able to harm you.” Seeing Chen Feng puzzled, he added with a smile, “Prince Rui is the title of the Seventh Prince Li Zeyin.”
Chen Feng chuckled. That guy owed her a big favor, he should help her out.
Upon their return, Chu Lingxuan was called to the front courtyard by the Marquis.
After freshening up, Chen Feng expressed her desire to rest, dismissing the servants and securing the door behind them.
Mrs. Li was puzzled, but Autumn explained, “Young Madam always rested this way before her wedding, she doesn’t like to be disturbed.”
Chen Feng climbed into bed, drew the curtains, and entered her space directly.
The Golden Swallow was lying on the ground, with wings spread out, a flushed face, a slightly open mouth, a trembling pink tongue, and even the short fur on his head standing on end.
