Chapter 3: A Changed Person
Zhao Xiulan scrutinized the mother and daughter who were arguing back and forth.
The previous owner dared not confront them, but the current Zhao Xiulan wasn’t someone to be trifled with.
Suppressing the pain in her head, Zhao Xiulan retorted to Li Lijuan, “Bah! Li Lijuan, stop talking nonsense. When did I become a bad person? My lineage is from my father, not my mother. Our Zhao family has been poor farmers for three generations, and I am also upright and honest! And when did I ever slack off? Li Lijuan, dare you compare work points with me in front of the production team leader and see who has more? Who’s the lazy one?
“Do I have to cook for you even when I’m running a high fever? Why don’t you do it yourselves? Expecting others to serve you without lifting a finger, you’re the epitome of hedonism, the style of the big landlords. You’re the one who deserves punishment and education!”
Stunned by Zhao Xiulan’s retort, both Li Lijuan and Ma Yumei were at a loss.
Normally, Zhao Xiulan didn’t even fart, let alone talk back to them. How come her tongue was so sharp today?
Is this still the old Zhao Xiulan?
After a moment of bewilderment, Ma Yumei became even angrier and pointed at Zhao Xiulan, scolding angrily, “Alright, Zhao Xiulan, have you become tough now? How dare you talk nonsense in front of me. You lazy good-for-nothing girl, watch me deal with you!”
Before Ma Yumei’s fist could land, Zhao Xiulan coldly warned, “Aunt Mei, if you have the guts, go ahead and hit me. I don’t mind making a scene today. I’d like to ask, how do we deal with Li Lijuan pushing me into the river and attempting murder? How should we handle that? You made me sick with a fever, and now you expect me to cook for you?”
After Zhao Xiulan finished speaking, Li Lijuan’s face turned pale for a moment. “You… Zhao Xiulan, what nonsense are you talking about? When did I push you into the river? When did I attempt murder…”
In this era, murder was a serious crime that could get one thrown into prison. She was still young; she didn’t want to eat prison food.
“Li Lijuan, do you think denying it will work? I was rescued by someone who saw you push me into the river. If you try to argue, I can always report it to the authorities. There’s a witness, and I believe the law will give me a fair outcome. Attempted murder could land you in jail for decades!”
With this heavy accusation from Zhao Xiulan, Li Lijuan was even more frightened. The imposing aura emanating from Zhao Xiulan made her afraid to say anything more.
Although Ma Yumei was angry, she was also afraid that Zhao Xiulan would really cause trouble. She didn’t want her daughter to get into legal trouble and end up in jail.
In the end, she gritted her teeth, glared fiercely at Zhao Xiulan, and said, “You wretched girl, if you don’t cook, then don’t eat! Just stay in the house properly. Let’s see how long you can hold out.”
With that, Ma Yumei rushed out of the room in a flurry of anger, and Li Lijuan glanced at Zhao Xiulan before quickly following her mother out.
After the peculiar mother-daughter pair left, Zhao Xiulan, leaning on her weak body, lay back on the bed.
After sleeping for a day, when it came to eating, Zhao Xiulan felt extremely hungry.
Fortunately, there were plenty of things in the space. Even if Ma Yumei didn’t give her anything to eat, Zhao Xiulan wasn’t afraid of starving to death.
Approaching her, Zhao Xiu Zhu asked worriedly, “Sister, how are you feeling now? Is your body getting better?”
