Chapter 8 Congratulations

The waiter felt a little embarrassed and quickly laughed, “Congratulations! To marry such a beautiful wife, it’s truly enviable.”

Luo Jiaojiao’s eyes flashed with joy at his words. It seemed he did approve of her; she had been worrying too much.

She looked at Leng Mohan happily and softly asked, “Didn’t we order too much? What if we can’t finish it all?”

Leng Mohan glanced at her and said calmly, “It’s okay. If you like it, eat more. If you can’t finish it, we can take it home.”

Luo Jiaojiao immediately put aside her worries and smiled happily.

Leng Mohan handed over the two cleaned lunch boxes, gesturing for Luo Jiaojiao to find a seat. He turned and walked towards the cashier to pay.

Luo Jiaojiao took the lunch boxes, understanding now. She had been puzzled by the new lunch boxes Leng Mohan had brought, but now all her doubts were gone. He had prepared them to pack the leftovers.

Looking around, Luo Jiaojiao finally chose a brightly lit seat. This spot was not only comfortable but also allowed her to admire the outside world through the window. However, the street scene was rather monotonous and didn’t add much to her mood.

“The dishes will be served soon. You don’t have to wait for all the dishes to arrive before you start eating. Just eat whatever comes first,” Leng Mohan came over and softly said to Luo Jiaojiao.

Luo Jiaojiao smiled and nodded, “Okay, I understand.”

Indeed, it wasn’t long before the dishes were served one by one.

Having only eaten bread yesterday and this morning, Luo Jiaojiao was eager to taste the steaming hot dishes.

Leng Mohan also noticed the anticipation and joy in her eyes, and he secretly rejoiced that his decision to bring her here for dinner was correct.

Leng Mohan first served Luo Jiaojiao a bowl of steaming hot chicken soup, gently placing it in front of her and carefully reminding her, “It’s hot. Wait until it cools down before you drink it.”

Luo Jiaojiao nodded eagerly; her gaze was already drawn to the braised pork on the table. It looked so tempting and mouthwatering.

She waited for Leng Mohan to start eating before she began. Every bite of the food was delicious, especially the piece of half-fatty, half-lean braised pork. It was tender and melt-in-your-mouth, leaving a lingering aftertaste.

Seeing Luo Jiaojiao eating so happily, Leng Mohan couldn’t help but start feeding her.

He wasn’t actually very hungry, as it wasn’t officially mealtime yet. He had just seen her eating noodles in the car, and a strange warmth filled his heart. At this moment, he just wanted to watch her enjoy the food contentedly, enjoying this simple and pure happiness.

Luo Jiaojiao lowered her eyelids slightly, a little shy, and softly said, “Brother Leng, you should eat yourself. I can get the dishes myself.”

Leng Mohan seemed not to hear, still persistently putting dishes into her bowl, “I’m not hungry yet. You eat more.”

Seeing this, Luo Jiaojiao couldn’t insist anymore and could only silently accept his kindness. At first, she was a little uncomfortable, but as time went on, she gradually relaxed and wholeheartedly immersed herself in the delicious food.

When the food in her bowl was about to form a small mountain, Luo Jiaojiao finally couldn’t help but stop him, “Brother Leng, really, no need. I’m full.”

She looked up at Leng Mohan, her eyes filled with gratitude and helplessness, “Just let me finish what’s in my bowl.”

Luo Jiaojiao was so engrossed in enjoying the food that the towering pile of rice and dishes before her became a bit overwhelming.

She secretly glanced at Leng Mohan, hesitating whether to confess that she was almost full.

Facing Leng Mohan’s deep gaze, she gritted her teeth and decided to continue the battle.

Leng Mohan observed Luo Jiaojiao’s reaction from the side. He had thought she would take the initiative to say she was full, but he didn’t expect her to choose to silently endure it.

He recalled his previous enthusiasm, constantly serving her dishes, and felt a little self-blame.

He waited, hoping she would say, “I can’t eat anymore,” but Luo Jiaojiao seemed to prefer to persevere rather than say it. Was she worried he would scold her?

Leng Mohan sighed softly, gently grasped Luo Jiaojiao’s hand, shook his head slightly, and gently but firmly persuaded, “Okay, don’t eat anymore. You’ll feel sick if you eat any more.”

Luo Jiaojiao blinked her bright eyes, looking at Leng Mohan innocently. Having grown up under the care of her grandparents, she knew that every grain of rice was hard-earned and absolutely couldn’t be wasted.

“But, Brother Leng, we can’t waste food,” Luo Jiaojiao’s voice held a hint of persistence and stubbornness, as if she was defending a deeply held belief.

Although Luo Jiaohui and his wife doted on her, Luo Jiaojiao didn’t become spoiled as a result. On the contrary, she developed many good habits from a young age, including not wasting food.

Luo Jiaojiao knew she couldn’t waste food carelessly. Therefore, even though Leng Mohan had dissuaded her, a determined light still shone in her bright eyes.

Leng Mohan hadn’t expected this reason. Although she was pampered, her character was excellent. It was simply that she had a good nature.

He reached out, gently took the bowl from Luo Jiaojiao’s hand, his tone calm yet with an undeniable firmness, “Give it to me.” With that, he buried his head and ate, saying nothing more.

Luo Jiaojiao’s eyes widened as she looked at the man in front of her. He didn’t hesitate to eat the food she had left.

“If you’re worried about wasting it, if I can’t finish it, I can take it home and eat it later,” Luo Jiaojiao understood the frugality of soldiers, knowing that wasting food was shameful in their eyes, but she absolutely didn’t want him to be troubled by this small matter.

Leng Mohan looked up and said casually, “It’s not a hardship. Don’t mention your leftover food. Before, to survive, I even ate tree bark.”

Luo Jiaojiao looked at him in shock, her eyes full of heartache, and tears welled up. She couldn’t hold back the tears rolling down her cheeks.

Leng Mohan was also troubled when he saw this. He put down the bowl and gently wiped away her tears with his fingers. However, his hands were full of calluses, and even with the gentlest touch, he still rubbed her face red.

“Okay, don’t cry. That’s all in the past. Now I’m doing well, and my salary is not low. If you want to eat meat, I can satisfy you anytime,” Leng Mohan was a little surprised. He hadn’t expected her to cry because of hearing about him eating tree bark.

“I’m doing well now, and not just me, you won’t suffer any hardship either. I’ll only eat your leftovers; I won’t touch anyone else’s.” Leng Mohan looked at the crying girl and said helplessly, “Okay, don’t cry, or else others will think I’m bullying you.”
