Chapter 47: The Rabbits
Luo Jiaojiao had never kept pets before. She thought little rabbits were the cutest, and they would even “get close” to her.
But somehow, all the rabbits suddenly started running towards a pillar and colliding with it.
Luo Jiaojiao was shocked speechless and screamed.
Leng Mohan heard her cry and hurried over, only to find that Luo Jiaojiao had only one little white rabbit left in her hands, while the other five large rabbits lay on the ground. Leng Mohan was also dumbfounded. He looked at Luo Jiaojiao, wanting to know what had happened.
“I don’t know where these rabbits came from. They seemed to have come from a small hole in the backyard. They were playing nicely with me at first, but suddenly they started running into the pillar. I don’t know what happened. They looked so cute, their fur was soft and fluffy, like a warm ball of cotton. Their eyes were round and bright, making me want to touch them.”
“I reached out and gently stroked their ears. Their ears were very soft, feeling like silk. The little rabbits were very well-behaved; they lay motionless in my arms, enjoying my touch.”
“But suddenly, they started jumping around wildly. I don’t know what happened, and then I saw them running into the pillar.”
“I don’t know why they suddenly did this. Did I do something wrong?”
Luo Jiaojiao fearfully tugged at Leng Mohan’s clothes, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Her body trembled uncontrollably, like a frightened bird. Leng Mohan sensed her fear and gently patted her hand to comfort her.
Luo Jiaojiao’s fingers tightly gripped Leng Mohan’s clothes, refusing to let go. Her eyes were filled with helplessness and fear, as if she were facing a terrifying demon. Seeing her like this, Leng Mohan felt sympathy and pity.
He walked to the rabbits lying on the ground, bent down, and carefully examined their bodies. He saw that the rabbits were all dead, and there were no other wounds on their bodies.
The only injury was from the impact. Leng Mohan was filled with doubt and disbelief.
“They voluntarily killed themselves to provide you with meat,” Leng Mohan said to Luo Jiaojiao. His voice was soft, but filled with disbelief.
Hearing this, Luo Jiaojiao looked at Leng Mohan incredulously, her tears even stopping in surprise. Was that what he meant? Did the rabbits commit suicide to provide her with meat?
Luo Jiaojiao’s heart was filled with shock and doubt. She didn’t understand why these rabbits would voluntarily kill themselves, nor why they would choose to give her meat. She looked at Leng Mohan, hoping he could give her an answer.
Seeing her expression, Leng Mohan felt fear and sadness. He didn’t know how to explain all this to her, nor how to make her accept this fact. He could only silently watch her, hoping she would gradually understand everything.
Luo Jiaojiao’s tears started flowing again. She didn’t know how to face this fact, nor how to face these rabbits. She felt a pang of regret in her heart. If she hadn’t been there, would the rabbits still be alive?
Seeing her like this, Leng Mohan felt suspicious. He walked up to her and gently hugged her. He hoped his embrace would give her some warmth and comfort, making her no longer so afraid and helpless.
Luo Jiaojiao cried in Leng Mohan’s arms, her body trembling uncontrollably. Leng Mohan gently patted her back to comfort her. He didn’t know how to explain it to her, but the rabbits had indeed died voluntarily.
“Mohan, what’s going on? The rabbits just appeared?” Wang Li, who had followed them, also looked astonished.
Leng Mohan shrugged, “It seems so. The rabbits came on their own. It was probably quiet here before, and they had a nest here. The sound of us cleaning scared them, causing them to have a stress response and run into the pillar.”
Leng Mohan felt it wasn’t that simple, but didn’t say anything more. It might have something to do with Luo Jiaojiao, but she herself didn’t know.
“We have rabbits to eat!” Wang Li exclaimed excitedly, striding over and picking up the rabbits. Counting them carefully, there were five, all large rabbits.
Mu Bai found it strange. Although rabbits are timid, they wouldn’t be so timid as to commit suicide by running into a wall at the sound of something. Under normal circumstances, wouldn’t they run away? He remembered what Mohan had just said, that the rabbits committed suicide to provide meat. The only person here just now was Luo Jiaojiao. Could it all be her doing?
Mu Bai looked at Mohan, and Mohan’s gaze met his. Mu Bai smiled and left to help clean up in the front room.
He knew that if this matter wouldn’t harm Mohan or the army, he wouldn’t meddle. Leng Mohan looked at Mu Bai’s back, knowing he wouldn’t interfere.
Leng Mohan looked at Luo Jiaojiao, thinking she must have a secret, but since she didn’t want to say it, he wouldn’t ask. She would tell him when she was ready. As long as she didn’t do anything illegal or harmful, he would protect her.
“Want to eat rabbit?” Leng Mohan looked up at Luo Jiaojiao. “Roasted rabbit.” His eyes held a hint of expectation, as if waiting for her answer.
Luo Jiaojiao’s heart tightened. She thought of the rabbits she had been playing with just now. They were so cute, with soft fur and bright eyes.
But now, this rabbit had suddenly killed itself. Looking at the rabbit’s corpse, she felt sadness and helplessness. She couldn’t accept this fact, nor could she accept Leng Mohan’s suggestion of eating roasted rabbit.
“No, I don’t want to eat it,” Luo Jiaojiao shook her head, her voice choked with emotion. Her eyes were red, as if she might cry at any moment.
“I didn’t want to eat them. I just saw that they were really rabbits, and thought of spicy rabbit, I didn’t mean to eat them, and then they just died,” Luo Jiaojiao felt that this was her good luck. She looked back to make sure no one saw this scene, then looked at Leng Mohan and said.
Leng Mohan raised his eyebrows and asked Luo Jiaojiao, “Good luck?”
Luo Jiaojiao nodded, “Yes, but only my grandparents know about it. I only told you. My grandparents said not to let others know about my good luck, otherwise, it would attract unwanted attention.”
“I don’t know when I discovered it, it was Grandpa who discovered it first. He thought my luck was exceptionally good, but he worried that I would be taken advantage of by someone with ulterior motives, so he told me not to tell anyone,” Luo Jiaojiao explained to Leng Mohan.
Leng Mohan looked at Luo Jiaojiao, a hint of imperceptible indulgence flashing in his eyes. He knew that Luo Jiaojiao’s grandparents were protecting her, not wanting her to be harmed. But he also knew that if Luo Jiaojiao’s luck was really that good, Luo Jiaohui wouldn’t easily let Luo Jiaojiao go.
“Your grandparents love you very much. They don’t want you to be hurt,” Leng Mohan said.
“I love my grandparents too. They are the closest people to me,” Luo Jiaojiao said, “But I don’t think my luck is a bad thing. Before, when Luo Meihui targeted me, she suffered the consequences. I wasn’t harmed at all.”
“Okay, don’t think too much about it. These rabbits were almost at the end of their lives anyway. Even if they hadn’t died here today, they would have died soon. Don’t be too sad. If you don’t want to eat them, I’ll have the cleaning crew take them away later. It’s not a waste; they died a worthwhile death.”
“It’s the survival of the fittest. Don’t worry too much. Rabbit is delicious. I’ll make some for you later. Don’t be sad. I’ll take you to wash your face. You’re crying like a little kitten.”
Leng Mohan’s hands were also dirty. He had just touched her face, and her face was even dirtier, looking quite comical.
“Mm.” Luo Jiaojiao put down the little rabbit in her hand and stroked its fur. “Little rabbit, leave this place quickly. Don’t come back here again. Find a dense patch of grass to hide in and don’t get caught by anyone.”
Luo Jiaojiao said to the little rabbit.
As if it could understand Luo Jiaojiao’s words, the little rabbit ran back into the small hole.
