After Fu Qingze left, Lin You took two broccolis from the freezer.
She locked the breakfast shop door and went upstairs.
If what Fu Qingze said was correct, and these vegetables could indeed jump faster, then she would pick two and try training them at home.
So, before going to bed, Lin You sat on the sofa and trained the broccoli to jump quickly from the coffee table.
However, she wasn’t sure if her control power was too weak, but the broccoli was always slow.
It seemed to take a long time just to hear the command.
This wasn’t going to work.
There was no way she could escape the task of moving vegetables.
Lin You became a bit anxious and decided to look around at home, finding a long, soft stick.
Then, she pulled a feather from a shuttlecock and tied it to the end of the stick, creating a vegetable-poking stick.
Back in the living room, Lin You sat back on the sofa, swinging the vegetable-poking stick in front of the broccoli to guide its direction.
“Come here, jump onto the sofa, speed up…” Lin You kept muttering.
But the broccoli seemed deaf, still moving only after a few minutes, and after a few more minutes, it finally gathered all its strength to jump.
But the result was still not as expected.
It seemed the broccoli, besides being deaf, was also a bit directionally challenged.
She told it to jump onto the sofa, but it kept jumping in random directions.
It knocked a tissue off the coffee table, then headed toward the TV…
Luckily, Lin You rushed over in time, preventing it from crashing into the appliances.
After practicing for about an hour, the broccoli still didn’t make any progress.
Lin You sighed in helplessness.
Forget it, if the big one won’t listen, I’ll try the small one.
She put the larger broccoli in a bag and took out the smaller one.
“You just stay here, get ready, and start!”
Lin You gave the jumping command, standing in front of the TV to protect the expensive electronics.
The small broccoli took quite a while before it finally “poofed” and jumped up from the table.
But it didn’t jump off the table. Instead, it jumped half a meter upwards, then fell down again.
Lin You was really disappointed.
After training a few more times, the result was still the same.
It seemed that although the vegetables’ individual situations were slightly different, they still couldn’t fully understand the commands.
Not only were their reactions slow, but they also couldn’t jump in the direction you wanted.
This meant that tomorrow, she still couldn’t rely on the vegetables to jump out on their own and would have to move them herself.
Thinking about her already aching waist, Lin You was worried about delaying tomorrow’s tasks, so she quickly brought over a foot-soaking bucket and a waist massager.
Soaking her feet in hot water to relieve fatigue.
Massaging her waist to ease the soreness.
Lin You lay on the sofa, and with the comfortable massage music, she fell asleep.
It wasn’t until the alarm went off after the massage was finished that she drowsily sat up.
She emptied the water from the foot soak bucket, put the massager away, stretched lazily, and felt much more relaxed.
Lin You shuffled back to the bedroom.
She covered herself with the quilt, and soon, she fell asleep again.
.
The next morning, before the alarm went off, Tong Lan’s phone call came first.
Lin You reached out from under the covers, grabbed the phone, and answered it. She heard the other side’s excited voice:
“Hey, you’re not still sleeping, are you? I’m already at the breakfast shop door!”
Lin You was startled.
So early?
She quickly threw on her clothes and went to wash up, saying, “So early? Did you take some kind of energizing shot?”
Tong Lan, stomping her feet in the cold wind, said:
“I don’t know how to cook, so I was worried I’d slow you down. Last night, I watched all kinds of cooking videos at home, and once I started, I couldn’t stop! Those dishes looked easy to make, but the final products were so delicious and colorful, I really want to try them!”
Lin You, with a toothbrush in her mouth, replied, “Okay, find a place with less wind to wait for me. I’ll finish washing up and come down to find you. Or you can come up and sit at my place first.”
Tong Lan shook her head, “I won’t go up; I’ll wait for you to come down!”
After hanging up, Lin You hurriedly spat out the foam, rinsed her mouth, and quickly washed her face.
Then, she put on a windproof coat and tied a wool scarf, quickly running downstairs.
Tong Lan was waiting at the door of the breakfast shop.
Lin You opened the door and took out the ingredients she had prepared yesterday.
“I’ll teach you how to make wontons first this morning, and I’ll also show you how to make pancakes; both are very simple. In the afternoon, a reporter will come, and I won’t have time to help. After that, I’ll start moving the vegetables from the freezer, and if any customers come to buy food, you’ll pretty much be in charge of cooking on your own,” Lin You instructed.
Tong Lan, curious, asked, “A reporter? Are they coming to interview you? Why would a reporter come here?”
Lin You explained everything about the breakfast shop to her.
Tong Lan, unable to hide her shock, was stunned for a long time.
“You’re so… amazing!” Tong Lan’s face was filled with excitement. “So my leg injury wasn’t healed by medicine; it was actually because I ate your vegetables…”
While they were talking, Lin You didn’t forget to take out the wonton filling she had prepared yesterday from the freezer on the far right.
This was the most important task for today, so she quickly said,
“The pork and corn filling is all mixed. You just need to take a wonton wrapper and put the filling inside.”
She then took out a stack of wonton wrappers, sprinkled some flour on the counter, and placed the wrappers on it. “Try it out.”
Tong Lan grabbed the apron hanging by the wall, tied up her hair, and rolled up her sleeves, ready to try: “Okay, I’ll give it a shot; it doesn’t look hard!”
She took the wonton wrapper that Lin You handed over, scooped a piece of meat with a small spoon, placed it inside the wrapper, and pressed it tightly.
Up until this point, everything looked fine, and Lin You nodded in satisfaction.
“Unlike dumplings, you need to fold the two corners of the wonton wrapper. Yes, pinch this part tightly, use your fingers to press it together, and apply some force…” Lin You guided Tong Lan step by step.
Tong Lan seemed to be doing everything correctly.
But when she let go of her hands, the result was quite different.
When Tong Lan applied force to seal the wonton, she directly deformed it.
Now, the wonton placed on the counter looked like a moth with its fur fried.
Lin You froze for a moment, then quickly encouraged her: “Don’t say, it’s quite cute.”
Tong Lan looked at the strange shape, clearly dissatisfied: “No, I’ll redo it. This one looks too ugly, I’ll just cook it and have it for breakfast.”
Lin You stepped in, showing her how to do it herself.
The small wonton wrapper seemed very obedient in her hands. After adding the filling, she folded the two corners, rolled, and pinched it, creating a beautiful little ingot shape.
Because the filling was full, it looked plump and very pretty.
Tong Lan couldn’t help but exclaim: “This thing looks simple, but why is it so hard to wrap up…”
Lin You nodded: “Craftsmanship needs practice. This is your first time making wontons, and it’s normal to get this shape. Just practice more in the future, and you’ll get better.”
Tong Lan replied with a “Mm”: “Don’t worry, I’m sure I can do it.”
After showing her once, Lin You left her to practice on her own.
Tong Lan practiced with enthusiasm.
Lin You thought back to before she left her previous job, when she was overwhelmed with multiple projects and feeling stressed. It felt like a lifetime ago.
The Tong Lan in front of her seemed so far removed from that stress.
Her face was filled with the excitement of trying her hand at cooking.
And after the excitement wore off, what remained was the careful and precise process of pinching wontons.
When one is immersed in something calming, it’s always healing.
Watching a wonton come to life from nothing and take on a beautiful shape gave a sense of accomplishment.
Although Tong Lan’s hands were still unsteady, and most of the wontons she made were misshapen, she was gradually able to wrap a few that were up to standard.
She placed the properly shaped ones together, looked at them from all sides, and said:
“I learn pretty quickly, right? These can be cooked for customers later.”
Lin You leaned over and took a quick look: “Not bad, but for now, you don’t need to practice these anymore. Before opening, we need to learn how to make pancakes.”
When Tong Lan heard this, her smile deepened.
She was a pancake enthusiast. When she used to go to work, she always saw a few small stands selling pancakes along the way.
The one she frequently bought from, the old lady was always very enthusiastic, adding extra eggs, followed by a generous amount of sauce and lettuce.
However, she wasn’t sure if it was because the old lady had gotten older, but she hadn’t been able to buy the same delicious pancake the last few years when passing by.
Tong Lan still remembered that pancake.
Now, the thought of being able to learn how to make pancakes herself made her even more excited.
“That’s great, I definitely have to try this, I’m going to make the best pancakes in the entire southern district of Ancheng.”
She said this as she took the spoon from Lin You to stir the batter.
This batter was made from mung bean flour, which was more nutritious than regular white flour.
Lin You observed her actions and said, “Yes, just like that, stir in one direction and the batter will be smoother.”
Then she bent down to get a bowl of eggs from beneath the counter and placed them on the table. “But your goal can be even bigger. Making the best pancakes in the southern district isn’t enough, let’s set a smaller goal first—to make the best pancakes in all of Ancheng…”
