Chapter 12: After going out for a few days, she brought a man back?
Ye Hong clutched the two packets of pig-breeding medicine in her basket, feeling much more at ease. Once this was done, her daughter wouldn’t have to worry about going to the countryside. And she could join the army and live in a big house! After her daughter had a child, she would also join the army to help with the baby and enjoy her life! Ye Hong returned to the compound, full of joy.
It was dinner time, everyone was busy cooking, no one noticed her unusual behavior. “Mom!” Li Tiantian waited at their door, seeing Ye Hong rush over, her lips trembling slightly, “Mom, something happened!” “Something big!” Ye Hong was still immersed in the joy of imagining her future, scolding, “What happened?” “Don’t make a fuss over nothing, what is it…” Before she finished, she heard Li Tiantian say, “Brother Chunfeng and that Su woman eloped!” “Eloped?” Ye Hong was so surprised her mouth could fit an egg. She ran home, and sure enough, they were gone. Why? Was her plan about to fall apart?
Li Tiantian continued to complain, “Brother Chunfeng even called his unit before he left, it seems he’s applying for marriage!” “Mom, do I have no hope?” Tears welled up in her eyes. Ye Hong was puzzled. She couldn’t understand one thing: they could just get married, why elope? “Do you know where they went?”
Li Tiantian shook her head, “No!” “Anyway, they left together!” “They’ve been gone for a whole day!” “I heard someone say they went to catch a train.” Ye Hong suddenly slapped her forehead, “They must have gone to Su Nan’s hometown.” You need your household registration book to get married, and ordinary people wouldn’t carry it with them, that must be it.
Li Tiantian stomped her feet anxiously, “Mom, what am I going to do?” “I can’t just watch that woman marry in, and then I have to keep sleeping in the living room?” She had only slept there one night, and her back and waist ached until now. She didn’t want to sleep in the living room anymore. Ye Hong comforted her, “The marriage application won’t be approved so quickly.” “As long as they haven’t gotten their marriage certificate, you still have a chance.” They would have to wait until they returned.
Ye Hong thought of something and rushed back to the room, found Song Tongzhou’s household registration book, carefully examined it, and remembered that Song Chunfeng’s household registration had long been moved. Great, she lost another tool to control him. Ye Hong clearly started to panic. She put away the household registration book and absentmindedly went to the kitchen to cook. Seeing no one in the living room, Song Chunxiao quietly found the household registration book and hid it in Song Chunfeng’s wardrobe.
With the household registration book hidden, she wouldn’t have to worry about the mother and daughter scheming against her. … The train slowly arrived at the station. Su Nan looked out and saw several stalls selling things outside, with thick white smoke rising from them. “Comrade Su, sit here, I’ll go buy something.
” Song Chunfeng said, and got up to walk down the long train car. Once he left, Su Nan had to watch their luggage, her plan to stock up on food had to be postponed. Just as the train was about to start, Song Chunfeng returned with a bag of corn and a bag of sesame cakes. “Comrade Su, eat it while it’s hot, I’ll go get you some hot water.” Song Chunfeng handed the food to Su Nan and went to get water with his army water bottle. Su Nan was a little uncomfortable being taken care of, staring at the food in a daze.
She hadn’t been so thoughtfully cared for in a long time. “Thief!” “Catch the thief!” Before Su Nan could react, she felt someone grab her by the throat. This carriage was almost full, why would a desperate thief choose to target her? Su Nan thought she must be incredibly unlucky. “Don’t move!” “If you come closer, I’ll… I’ll kill her!” A sharp knife was pressed against Su Nan’s neck, almost cutting her delicate skin.
“Get up and get off with me!” the thief ordered. Su Nan’s life was in someone else’s hands, so she could only obey, put down her things, and slowly stood up. “Get out of the way!” The thief forcefully made his way, a suffocating atmosphere filled the carriage. As they approached the door, Su Nan saw Song Chunfeng hiding in the crowd, comforting her with his eyes, telling her not to be afraid. Su Nan gave a reassuring wink.
Before the thief pushed her off the train, she forcefully hit her head backward, grabbing the knife pressed against her neck with one hand. “Ah!” A scream came from behind, followed by a crisp “crack.” Just hearing it, one could feel the pain.
When Su Nan steadied herself and turned around, she saw the thief being lifted up like a chicken by Song Chunfeng. The thief’s hand holding the knife was hanging limply, probably broken. “Comrade Su, are you alright?” Song Chunfeng worriedly asked. “I’m fine.” It seemed the thief was the one in trouble now. Su Nan quickly sized him up. He looked presentable, but a bit short, how did he become a robber? Two train attendants came and scolded him, taking him away, “For a drumstick, was it necessary?” Su Nan then realized her neck was oily, probably from the drumstick, it was disgusting.
Back in her seat, she quickly took out her handkerchief and wiped her neck clean with some hot water. Song Chunfeng returned with news about the thief, “The boy was hungry for several days, couldn’t resist the smell of the drumstick, and reached out to steal it when no one was looking…” Su Nan felt a lingering fear. It seemed she couldn’t eat too well outside, otherwise, she might be targeted.
Fortunately, the rest of the journey was smooth. Su Nan’s hometown was in the Red Flag Brigade under the Zhengyang Commune. After three days of train travel, they needed to take a half-day minibus to the commune, then a two-hour ox cart to the brigade. “Comrade Song, that’s my home ahead.” Song Chunfeng looked up and saw several mud houses in the distance. It seemed mostly mud houses or half-mud houses here. Just as Su Nan’s stepmother was cursing in the yard, she saw Su Nan return and immediately pointed at her, scolding, “You dead girl!”
“Where have you been these days?” She thought Su Nan had run away, thankfully she had taken precautions and hidden the household registration book. Otherwise, her son’s bride price would be gone. When she saw a tall and strong man behind Su Nan, her eyes widened, “You went out for a few days and brought a man back?”
She subconsciously began to weigh whether this man had money or Su Nan’s fiancé’s family had money.
