The End of the World Scavenger: I Win by Turning Waste into Treasure Chapter 8: An Acquaintance?

Soon, her pupils contracted slightly, her lips pressed into a straight line as she fixed her gaze on one of the men.

The man, surrounded by others, had a face identical to the one of the criminal from the disfiguring rape and murder case she handled a year ago.

Lin Chu couldn’t help but wonder if the reason she was randomly selected by the system to enter the infinite apocalypse was connected to this man. Could it be that this criminal, who should have been executed, had been pulled into the infinite apocalypse by the system before his execution?

And to cover up the disappearance of a person, did the authorities have to publicly announce that the death sentence had been carried out?

Various possibilities flashed quickly through Lin Chu’s mind.

Meanwhile, the men noticed the short, skinny, and panicked figure who had returned alone. They furrowed their brows.

The short man staggered toward them, then suddenly knelt.

The man in the center stepped forward, frowning as he sized him up, then grabbed him by the collar and lifted him up.

Comparing his size to the fat, tall man in Lin Chu’s backpack, this man was equally formidable, with muscles even more solid than the one Lin Chu had witnessed a year ago during the live body sample collection. He appeared much stronger now.

The short man was lifted like a chicken, unable to resist at all.

Perhaps concerned about attracting zombies, the man’s voice was soft.

The short man trembled uncontrollably, as though shaking off chaff, and his words were so faint they could only be heard by the man in front of him.

Although Lin Chu had learned lip reading from an old officer at the police station, the angle made it difficult for her to catch the full conversation.

From what she could gather, it seemed the man didn’t want to return to the convenience store to save the fat man. They had more important tasks to handle.

It seemed… it was related to the mission given by the system.

Were they, like her, also mission takers?

While Lin Chu’s mind raced through a thousand thoughts, the short man was released and watched by a few of the others as they turned and headed towards the underground parking garage entrance.

Though she was eager to follow them and learn more about what was going on, there were too many of them, and they appeared to be desperate outlaws.

Moreover, they were armed—some with baseball bats for defense, others with large battle axes gleaming under the moonlight.

Charging ahead would be like throwing an egg at a stone.

For now, finding the right supplies and going back to dissect zombies to complete her daily tasks and accumulate points was Lin Chu’s most important mission. As for the rest, she would deal with it later.

Watching them head underground, Lin Chu turned and headed west.

She had glanced at the road signs when she arrived. Following the short man, she had moved from Building 3 to the southwest side of Building 4.

Now, she needed to reach the warehouse in Building 8, which was conveniently located to the west of Building 4.

After the experience at the convenience store, scavenging, and battling, it was now 4 a.m.

The sky was faintly lightening in the distance, and Lin Chu knew she didn’t have much time left.

According to her plan before leaving, she didn’t want to be wandering outside after dawn. Zombies were more active at that time and more likely to detect any movements.

With this thought in mind, she quickened her pace.

Perhaps because the group had been lingering near Building 4, they had already cleared the nearby zombies. On her route to Building 8, only a few scattered zombies remained near the entrance.

Lin Chu made quick work of the zombies blocking the door and cautiously stood outside the shattered glass doors to check inside.

This pharmaceutical tech park had been built in the style of a typical tech park, with buildings of similar height and layout. The first floor of Building 8 was a lobby, not much different from the first floor of Building 6, a spacious hall.

However, to facilitate the transportation of goods, the first floor of Building 8 wasn’t tiled, and there was a long slope at the entrance. The decor was simple.

Inside the lobby, there were many handcarts for transporting goods and several empty boxes scattered on the ground.

Lin Chu speculated that these empty boxes were left by people familiar with the area who came to retrieve items during the official retreat after the outbreak of zombies.

The footprints and bloodstains on the floor had long since dried, as though no one had been here for a long time.

There weren’t many zombies wandering inside, and clearly, those who had come to collect goods had already cleaned up.

Lin Chu walked inside, carrying her bone club. She picked up some scattered medicine on the floor and tossed it into her backpack.

She wasn’t concerned about the type of medicine or whether it was expired for now.

After dispatching two wandering zombies, she finally saw the floor directory at the freight elevator entrance on the right side of the lobby.

Building 8 had a total of 10 floors.

The first floor was for unloading goods and receiving visitors.

Floors 2-6 were used for storing ordinary medicines, with each floor dedicated to drugs produced by different enterprises in the park.

Floors 7-8 were sterile rooms, containing several sterile rooms for storing medical equipment that needed to be kept sterile. Lin Chu’s beloved dissection tools were most likely stored on these two floors.

The 9th floor was for electrostatic discharge prevention equipment, which specialized in storing electronic medical devices.

The 10th floor was for laboratories.

Lin Chu planned to head straight to the 8th floor to look for her dissection tools and then work her way down to stock up on medicine.

As long as one was alive, the possibility of falling ill remained. In addition to food and water, medicine was essential for survival. With such a large pharmaceutical warehouse in front of her, Lin Chu would be doing herself a disservice if she didn’t stockpile some medicines.

The tech park had long since lost power, so Lin Chu would have to use the fire escape to reach the upper floors.

She looked at the fire door of the escape route, gripping her bone club tightly.

She knew that fire safety was generally stricter in regulated locations, especially in pharmaceutical enterprises. To ensure the safety of drugs and medical equipment, regular checks on fire facilities were mandatory.

The fire doors were made of special materials, heavier than ordinary doors, and unless there had been a large zombie chase, the fire escape would usually be safe.

Lin Chu cautiously approached, crouched down, and observed through the gap under the door.

Then, she extended her left hand, already covered in sweat and blood, and gripped the door handle.

Before opening the door, Lin Chu mentally ran through her escape route one more time.

Once she confirmed it was safe, she held her breath and pushed the door open a crack.

A faint sound echoed before her.

The noise wasn’t loud, but in the stillness of the night, with the unknown lurking behind the door, Lin Chu’s heart jumped to her throat.
