Chapter 36
Xue Miaoyun watched the person in front of her, jumping and shouting, and felt that there were some things she didn’t quite know.
After thinking for a moment, Xue Miaoyun decided to use another ability from her “Jiao Spirit Essence” golden finger—“Enchanting Voice.” This was a skill she had accidentally discovered before.
In the legend of mermaids, their singing could enchant people, so Xue Miaoyun decided to give it a try. To her surprise, it actually worked.
However, using this skill took a huge toll on her throat, and she had only tried it once before.
Looking around and seeing that no one was nearby, Xue Miaoyun quickly pulled Zhao Meihua into a corner.
“Tell me everything you know…”
Half an hour later, Xue Miaoyun walked out from the corner with a pale face, disregarding the pain in her throat. She immediately made her way toward the village entrance.
Along the way, people greeted her, but she didn’t respond to anyone.
Xue Miaoyun rushed to the county at top speed, bought the next train ticket at the station. Since there were no soft sleeper tickets available, she opted for a hard seat instead.
Train seats were no longer arranged for one person per seat; now, three people were squeezed into one row. Xue Miaoyun’s seat was in the middle, flanked by two middle-aged men. Glancing at her spot, she decided to stand instead.
Leaning against the train door, Xue Miaoyun felt somewhat dazed.
She hadn’t expected that there were people who had been reincarnated in this world. Zhao Meihua was one of them. When Xue Miaoyun used her enchantment skill to learn this, she was astonished. But considering her own situation, she didn’t doubt it. However, what she learned next sent a chill down her spine.
Cang Ling would die soon during a mission. How could she accept that? For a moment, she was filled with panic, and by the time she came to her senses, she had already boarded the train.
She had always thought that even though she had married Cang Ling, their feelings weren’t deep. At least, she thought she was rational and didn’t have the mindset of putting her husband above everything else, like many other women. But now, she wasn’t so sure anymore.
Hearing that Cang Ling would die, her heart became a mess, and all she could think about was seeing him again.
Leaning against the train door, Xue Miaoyun watched the scenery speed by, sighing inwardly.
“Doctor Xue, what are you doing here?”
“Mr. Zhao?” Xue Miaoyun was surprised to see the man suddenly appear in front of her. What was he doing on this train?
Zhao Wenyuan felt a surge of joy upon seeing Xue Miaoyun. Though he knew she was married and to a military man no less, seeing a woman he liked still made him happy.
“Doctor Xue, where are you headed?” Zhao Wenyuan asked with concern.
“I’m going to join the army,” Xue Miaoyun replied awkwardly.
Zhao Wenyuan’s expression didn’t change, but he asked, “Such a long journey, didn’t you get a sleeper ticket?”
“Uh, I was in a hurry to leave and didn’t get a ticket,” Xue Miaoyun explained.
Zhao Wenyuan’s smile was a little forced. “Is that so?”
“Doctor Xue, my compartment is empty. Why don’t you come and rest there for a while?”
Xue Miaoyun shook her head. “No, it’s too much trouble. I’m fine here.”
“Doctor Xue saved Binbin’s life, and our Zhao family owes you a debt of gratitude. If I let you stay here alone, my mother will definitely scold me,” Zhao Wenyuan said in a warm, polite tone, a little helpless but also pleading.
With the situation laid out like that, Xue Miaoyun couldn’t refuse anymore. “…Then, thank you, Mr. Zhao.”
She followed Zhao Wenyuan to his sleeper compartment, where he was the only one there. Xue Miaoyun, her legs a little weak from standing, decided to sit on the lower bunk.
“Thank you, Mr. Zhao.” Although Xue Miaoyun had arrived in a time of scarce resources, she hadn’t really endured much hardship. The moment she arrived, she took care of the scoundrels who had bullied her, and then she left the Song family.
After that, with the supplies from the space and her golden finger, her life was easy—she had enough to eat, and the family didn’t go hungry. So, she really hadn’t suffered. After standing for an hour, though, her legs were starting to feel sore.
Zhao Wenyuan was very polite. “Doctor Xue, no need to be so formal. Please wait for a moment…”
He said as he went out, leaving Xue Miaoyun alone in the compartment. She relaxed and began to massage her legs.
She casually looked around the compartment. It was another one for officials—clean and quiet.
Rubbing her temples, Xue Miaoyun felt exhausted. The events of the day had really drained her energy.
“Doctor Xue, drink some brown sugar water and eat something. I noticed your complexion doesn’t look too good,” Zhao Wenyuan said, placing some items on the table and offering them to her.
Xue Miaoyun wasn’t hungry and had no appetite, but since it was a kind gesture, she said, “Thank you.”
She took small sips and bites.
Zhao Wenyuan picked up a file and began reading, not disturbing her while she ate.
After she finished the brown sugar water, Xue Miaoyun stood up, intending to wash the cup.
“Let me do it. You seem tired, so take a rest for a while,” Zhao Wenyuan said as he stood up.
Xue Miaoyun looked at Zhao Wenyuan, who had already stood, and then at the cup in her hand. She wasn’t used to pushing things back and forth. “Thank you, Comrade Zhao.”
When Zhao Wenyuan returned to the compartment, he found Xue Miaoyun leaning against the lower bunk, asleep.
He sat back in his seat and picked up the file he had been reading before, but he hadn’t turned a page for a long time.
When Xue Miaoyun woke up, the sky outside the window had completely darkened.
“Ugh!” Her half body had gone numb.
“What’s wrong?” Zhao Wenyuan started to reach out but stopped himself.
At the sound of her groan, Xue Miaoyun was fully awake now.
“It’s nothing,” Xue Miaoyun said, struggling to sit up. She glanced at her watch—it was already 7:00 PM.
“I slept for so long.”
“I could see that you were really exhausted, so I didn’t wake you up. Are you hungry? I can go buy something for you,” Zhao Wenyuan said, putting down the file and pen in his hands.
Xue Miaoyun quickly declined. “I’m not hungry. Really, not at all.”
She was just a little groggy. Although she had taken a Life’s Blue pill, which had fixed her throat, the side effects of using the enchantment skill were worse than she had expected. Thankfully, she had met Zhao Wenyuan and could rest in the sleeper. If she had still been standing, she feared she might have fainted.
Seeing that she was so determined and really wasn’t hungry, Zhao Wenyuan didn’t insist. He had some biscuits with him—his mother had insisted he bring them, in case he got hungry later.
“You’re not in good health. You shouldn’t rush like this, and you definitely shouldn’t have bought a hard seat ticket. Such a long journey, you can’t handle it.” Zhao Wenyuan sounded a little unhappy. Didn’t Doctor Song say her husband was a deputy regiment commander?
Xue Miaoyun knew he was well-meaning, and he was right.
“I was impulsive, and I didn’t think about the consequences in the heat of the moment. Luckily, I met Comrade Zhao. Are you heading back to work, Mr. Zhao?” She quickly changed the subject.
“Yes, my holiday is over,” Zhao Wenyuan replied.
