Chen Feng stepped onto a chair and reached into the Gold House to retrieve Jinbei.
Jinbei seemed incredibly eager, its tiny body warm to the touch and trembling in Chen Feng’s palm.
Chen Feng chuckled, “Don’t worry, Bei. You’ll get to play with your brothers soon.” Placing it on Chu Siyu’s little chest, she introduced, “This is big brother Chu Siyu.”
Jinbei was thrilled, emitting a soft glow, and its tiny mouth seemed to lean in for a kiss on Siyu’s cheek. Delighted, Chen Feng then placed Jinbei on Chu Siming’s chest, introducing, “He is second brother Chu Siming.”
Jinbei spread its little wings wider than before, about a finger’s width, seemingly caressing Siming with its wings.
After playing for about an hour, Chen Feng felt it was almost time for feeding. After nursing, it would be time to change diapers, and Mama Li along with the two nursemaid attending to the brothers should enter the bedroom. The two children had refused to drink milk from the wet nurse after Chen Feng nursed them, prompting the wet nurse to be replaced with two experienced mothers.
As Chen Feng prepared to leave, the Golden Swallow, reluctant to part, tearfully pleaded, “Mommy, I haven’t played enough yet.”
Chen Feng explained, “If they come in and find us gone, it won’t look good. Be good, Mommy will come back to play with you later.”
“Then come back after feeding them.” Golden Swallow compromised.
Shaking her head, Chen Feng declined, “It’s late, Mommy needs to sleep. Don’t worry, Mommy will find a way to spend more time with you.” Increasing their exposure to the space energy would be beneficial for the children.
Unable to persuade Chen Feng, the Golden Swallow relented, saying, “It’s the first time I’ve met my two little brothers, I want to give them a gift.”
With that, he flew into the Gold House and emerged with two large-sized green swallow nests in his beak.
Chen Feng was pleasantly surprised by Golden Swallow’s generosity this time. After the children consumed the nests, known for their immune-boosting properties, their health would be greatly enhanced.
Curious, she asked, “Can they eat at this age?”
The Golden Swallow reassured, “Don’t worry, it’s easier for them to digest than Mommy’s milk.”
Chen Feng dipped the green swallow nests in her handkerchief and carefully placed them in her pouch to feed the children later.
She exited the space with the bed and children. Soon, Mama Li and her assistants arrived. Chen Feng lit a lamp and proceeded to feed little Yu first, followed by little Ming.
Despite the fragrant aroma filling the bedroom, Mama Li and the others didn’t suspect a thing, assuming that the scent was from the incense.
Mama Li even commented, “The Madam is truly blessed. Other households have an unpleasant smell, but Madam’s room always smells so fragrant, like a garden.”
Chu Lingxuan became busy again, often returning home late. Chen Feng took Yu and Ming into the space daily, either in the evening or during the afternoon break, for varying durations.
The two boys were growing robustly, with bright white teeth and rosy lips, rarely crying, and very endearing.
On the first day of the twelfth month, the two brothers turned one month old.
Early that morning, Chen Feng bathed and dressed in a light yellow embroidered rose silk jacket with fur trim and a long skirt of crimson flower-patterned silk. She adorned herself with a golden phoenix hairpin and a gold-threaded forehead ornament with dangling butterfly flowers.
Tranquility, harmony, and splendor blended naturally on her.
As she admired herself in the mirror, Chen Feng experienced a moment of surreal clarity. This was the most beautiful mother, and it was her.
While reveling in the moment, Chen Feng noticed Chu Lingxuan in the mirror.
His eyes gleamed with a smile as he gently touched her shoulder and said, “Feng…”
He trailed off, and Chen Feng reached out to hold his large hand, smiling back at his reflection. She then quickly composed herself and remarked, “I forgive you this time, but don’t keep turning your back on me in the future.”
Since the previous night, Chu Lingxuan had been visibly somber.
Given the lively banquet for Three-days old, they decided to keep the one-month celebration relatively low-key. They invited a select few well-connected families from Dingzhou Prefecture, including the Chen, Fu, Liu, Qin, and Chen Ye families, along with a few relatives.
However, Chen Ming and his wife wouldn’t attend. Mrs. Wang had already sent over the children’s clothes and two small gold locks. Chen Feng guessed that Chen Mingvdidn’t want to see Chen Shiying and didn’t want Mrs. Wang to see him either.
Mrs. Wang had once hinted to Chen Feng that when she gave birth, Chen Shiying and Mrs. Wang cried together under the window, which displeased Chen Ming.
Chen Feng suspected that whatever upset Chen Ming might have been due to physical contact between Mrs. Wang and Chen Shiying in their distress. While they may not have been openly weeping, they likely comforted each other in sorrow. In ancient times, Chen Ming’s discontent would have been understandable in such a situation.
In fact, Chen Shiying had been summoned to the capital by the Emperor the day before. It was rumored that the document he presented gleamed with significance, delighting the Emperor and the court officials. After the New Year, he would likely assume an important position in the capital, possibly becoming the Deputy Minister of Public Works overseeing land development. Third Master Chu had already heard this news and relayed it to Chen Feng.
To support her father’s promotion, Chen Feng had prepared seeds for “Dingzhou wheat”, “Dingzhou rice”, and “Dingzhou corn”. She intended to send these to him for assistance when needed.
The Yongning Marquis’s residence in the capital wouldn’t be sending anyone but had already sent gifts in advance. Gifts had also arrived from the Ninth Prince and Prince Rui Mansion. Princess Rong Zhao had returned home from the temple, restricting Marquis Chu’s freedom. As Second Master Chu was busy with state affairs, Chen Feng had a strained relationship with his second wife. Their absence was understandable. Third Madam Chu didn’t come, likely due to matters she couldn’t leave behind in the capital. Chu Hua had planned to come but suddenly wrote a letter a few days ago, announcing her pregnancy.
They had expected representatives from the Lou Family but were surprised when only gifts arrived the previous evening.
With none of their in-laws’ relatives present, Chen Feng felt somewhat embarrassed.
It turned out that the Lou family used to attend events for Chu Hanyan’s birthdays. However, since Chen Feng married into the Chu family, they had stopped coming for such celebrations. They didn’t even attend the one-month celebration for the two brothers.
Chu Lingxuan, though he didn’t express it, felt deeply disappointed and remorseful, feeling he let Chen Feng down and made her uncomfortable.
During their sleep the previous night, Chu Lingxuan had been silent, lost in thought with his back turned the entire night.
Upon hearing Chen Feng’s complaint, Chu Lingxuan paused, realizing he had indeed turned his back on his wife all night. He responded, “Oh, I didn’t realize… I won’t do it again in the future.”
Chen Feng provocatively remarked, “Do you regret marrying me? Or perhaps you should have married your cousin. That way, your grandmother, uncle, and aunt wouldn’t be angry with you.”
