Su Wan couldn’t accept it just yet.

She carefully checked her pulse again.

Completely stunned.

“What is it?” Gu Huaizhi suppressed the heat still surging within him and scooped the dazed Su Wan into his arms, placing her gently on the soft couch. “I’ll have Mo Yuan summon the imperial doctor.”

Su Wan nodded blankly. A doctor couldn’t always treat herself—it was entirely possible she’d misread her own pulse, right?

Upon receiving the order, Mo Yuan galloped off toward the Liu residence.

Gu Huaizhi looked at Su Wan’s dazed, disbelieving expression and had a suspicion in his heart. He poured a cup of warm water and placed it in her hand.

“You made up the part about the child to stop me just now… and now it turns out it’s real?”

Gu Huaizhi’s gaze was deep and intense as it settled on her lower abdomen.

Su Wan held the teacup tightly, taking two sips to calm her nerves.

“I had something serious to discuss with you, and I panicked—so I used that as an excuse to stop you. I didn’t expect…”

Her fingers picked at the rim of the cup, her mind a complete mess, unable to settle on a decision. “If… if I really am pregnant, what should we do?”

They had clearly agreed to wait a few more years before having children.

Their careers were both on the rise.

Su Wan’s mind was a tangled mess. She lowered her gaze. “Maybe I misread the pulse.”

It was all too sudden, and she hadn’t yet processed the unexpected news.

Gu Huaizhi had indeed been stunned when he first heard that she might be pregnant. The shock left him momentarily frozen, but then a surge of heat and exhilarating joy rose from deep within.

Yet Su Wan’s reaction was like someone hitting the pause button—his rising emotions, his fervent blood, all seemed to freeze in place.

He remained silent for a long while before speaking hoarsely, “What do you want to do?”

Su Wan felt utterly lost. She imagined the possibility—what if she really was pregnant? Though it hadn’t been part of the plan, it was still a new life, a child that belonged to her and Gu Huaizhi. Just thinking about it stirred something strange within her—something warm, full, a mixture of joy and anticipation, tinged with a faint unease and uncertainty.

She set down the teacup, placed both hands gently on her flat, soft abdomen, and that subtle feeling washed over her again. To her own surprise, she began to feel a bit of anticipation. She didn’t want to think about anything else—just simply imagined that having a child might not be so bad after all.

Gu Huaizhi watched her expressions shift from confusion to frowning, from hesitation to joy. He reached out and gently patted her head. “Don’t be nervous. It might not be real.”

When Su Wan considered that possibility, she actually felt a flicker of disappointment.

“My medical skills… shouldn’t be that poor, right?”

She wrapped her arms around Gu Huaizhi’s waist and leaned softly against him. “I was just caught off guard. I was overwhelmed because its arrival disrupted our plans. But when you asked me what I wanted to do, I gave it serious thought—and I realized it’s not something I can’t accept. In fact… I’m really looking forward to it.”

Gu Huaizhi’s heart melted. “I’m looking forward to it too.” Yet as he touched Su Wan’s fair, delicate cheek, there was still a trace of youthful softness to her features. “As long as it doesn’t harm your health.”

Su Wan’s arms tightened around him, the corners of her lips curving upward. She thought, this felt pretty good.

“Jingyun has entered the palace now. He’s been longing to have Baozhu accompany him. If we have a child, Mother will pour more of her attention into them. It might bring her some comfort.”

Su Wan was about to check her pulse again—there was still a lingering sense of unreality in her heart.

Just then, Imperial Doctor Liu arrived.

“Commandery Princess, are you feeling unwell?” he asked as he took out the pulse pillow.

Su Wan let go of Gu Huaizhi and placed her hand on the pillow. “Please check for a peace pulse.”

Seeing her cheeks flushed and her eyes full of laughter, Imperial Doctor Liu thought she looked to be in excellent spirits—certainly not someone who was ill.

Suddenly, a thought seemed to strike him. After carefully taking her pulse, a smile spread across his face. “Congratulations to the Commandery Princess and Young Master Gu—there will soon be a new addition to the household.”

Su Wan let out a long breath and raised her brows in delight, her smile bright as she turned to Gu Huaizhi. “See? I told you! My medical skills aren’t lacking!”

Gu Huaizhi smiled as well, not exposing her bluff. “Yes, Madam Gu’s medical skills are truly exceptional.”

Imperial Doctor Liu added with a smile, “However, the Commandery Princess’s body suffered damage before. Your qi and blood are both weak—you’ll need some nourishing remedies.”

Su Wan’s smile faltered slightly. She knew it was the aftereffect of being afflicted by gu poison, followed by falling seriously ill. Her body hadn’t fully recovered yet.

“I’ll trouble you to write me a prescription to replenish my strength,” Su Wan said, glancing at the physician with a hint of embarrassment. “When it comes to treating myself, I can’t help but hesitate, afraid of harming the child. I second-guess the dosage and ingredients, and that compromises the effectiveness of the treatment.”

Imperial Doctor Liu teased her kindly, “With the Commandery Princess’s level of skill, I nearly forgot—you’re still a mortal like the rest of us.”

He picked up his brush and quickly wrote out a prescription, handing it to Su Wan. “Take a look. If anything seems inappropriate, feel free to make adjustments.”

Su Wan glanced at the prescription. “This is a very good formula. No need to make any changes.”

Imperial Doctor Liu gave her a few parting instructions, then picked up his medicine case and took his leave.

Gu Huaizhi personally walked him out.

Su Wan sat gently rubbing her belly, still finding it all a bit unbelievable.

Two quarters of an hour later, Gu Huaizhi finally returned, looking as if he had hurried back.

“Where did you go? You’ve been gone so long,” Su Wan said, scooting inward on the soft couch to make room for him.

Gu Huaizhi sat down beside her, gazing at her gentle, serene expression. His heart grew calm and settled. “I was asking Imperial Doctor Liu some questions.”

Su Wan said, “You could’ve just asked me—no one knows more about this than I do.”

Gu Huaizhi smiled without replying, his gaze soft as water.

Meeting his eyes, Su Wan leaned in and kissed him lightly on the lips. “Young Master Gu, congratulations—you’re going to be a father.”

Gu Huaizhi’s throat moved as he swallowed, then wrapped his arms around her waist. “Madam Gu, congratulations—you’re going to be a mother.”

The two of them shared a smile.

Leaning against his chest, Su Wan said, “I’ve entrusted Young Lady Cao to Young Master Xie. She’ll help me purchase land, but I need to pick a few people to accompany her. Do you have any suggestions?”

Gu Huaizhi chuckled, knowing full well she was turning to him because she didn’t have many reliable people on hand.

“You just rest. I’ll choose them for you,” Gu Huaizhi said, lifting an eyebrow. “So earlier, you interrupted me for this?”

Then, thinking again of Su Wan’s condition, Gu Huaizhi felt a bit relieved. “When do you need them?”

“First thing tomorrow morning,” Su Wan said, pushing him away and urging, “Go now, quickly!”

Gu Huaizhi: “…”

“I need people who understand medicinal herb cultivation and also have management skills.”

“Husband, I know it’s a bit difficult to find such people on short notice, but I believe in you.”

Su Wan wrapped her arms around his neck in an ingratiating hug, planted a kiss on his cheek, and shamelessly flattered him. “In my heart, you’re capable of anything—and the baby thinks so too!”

To his surprise, Gu Huaizhi found himself rather enjoying the flattery. He pinched her cheek. “Don’t run around. If you need anything, ask the people around you. I’ll be back soon.”

He already had a few candidates in mind. Before leaving, he had someone inform Mother Gu about Su Wan’s pregnancy.

Upon hearing the news, Mother Gu was so thrilled that she hurried straight to the main courtyard. From a distance, she saw Su Wan walking over.

She quickly stepped forward to support her. “Wanwan, where are you going at this hour?”
