Hm?
Lin Chu was caught completely off guard by the sudden question and was stunned for a moment.
Then, she laughed.
She had always followed one principle: as long as she had no morals, no one could morally blackmail her.
She turned around to face Nurse Bai directly.
Lin Chu wasn’t particularly tall.
She stood at only 165 cm—just average height.
But when her phoenix eyes narrowed, they always carried a powerful pressure that made people forget her actual height.
At that moment, the nurse standing in front of her—who was taller than her—suddenly felt as though she were a whole head shorter under Lin Chu’s intense presence.
“Nurse Bai, since you’re so selfless, why didn’t you volunteer earlier?”
Lin Chu spoke slowly and evenly, with no hint of emotion in her tone, but the hairs on Nurse Bai’s arms stood up involuntarily.
Her eyes flickered as she tried to defend herself, “If I had the ability, I would’ve…”
She didn’t get to finish. Lin Chu raised a finger and pressed it gently in the air.
“Shh—”
“If you don’t have the ability, then don’t point fingers in front of me.”
With that, Lin Chu didn’t spare her another glance. She turned and walked out.
Just as she reached the door, she almost bumped into a round-faced nurse with a confused look on her face.
Lin Chu nodded at her.
The nurse, still in a daze, reflexively nodded back, then stood there dumbfounded as she watched Lin Chu’s figure disappear down the corridor.
When she stepped into the ward, she saw Nurse Bai staring directly at the door with a dark expression, biting her lip.
The round-faced nurse jumped in fright.
“Sister Bai, what’s wrong?”
She had overheard the conversation between Nurse Bai and Doctor Lin outside the door and didn’t think Doctor Lin said anything wrong…
Bai Wei snapped out of it and gave her a cold look.
“The shift’s over. Why are you back?”
The round-faced nurse pointed at the table. “I… I forgot my watch. Just came back to get it.”
She quickly grabbed the watch and hurried out like she was fleeing, still politely calling back:
“Sister Bai, I’m heading off. If you get overwhelmed, just call me.”
Too scary. Way too scary.
Sister Bai was always careful and responsible with her work, but who knew she’d be so terrifying when angry? She even offended Doctor Lin, the one Captain Wang had his eyes on for recruitment.
She wished she hadn’t seen any of it.
She was going back to get some proper rest. Maybe she was hallucinating from staying up all night.
The round-faced nurse slapped her own head and left.
Bai Wei finally looked away and turned to the window.
There, Lin Chu was holding a work point ledger, heading into the supplies exchange office.
Lin Chu…
Bai Wei’s lips moved several times, silently repeating the name, before letting out a mocking smile.
It had been a long time since she last heard that name.
…
Lin Chu was in a great mood.
After a night of work and using some antibiotics, she earned 5 jin of rice, 5 cans of meat, and 45 work points.
Originally, Wang Rui was supposed to accompany her to exchange goods.
But since he had patrol duty that morning, he showed her where the exchange office was before leaving.
So Lin Chu came on her own.
Seeing a new face, the auntie at the counter gave her a few curious glances.
“Miss, what do you want to exchange?”
Lin Chu looked at the price list behind the auntie.
Just as the round-faced nurse had said—1 egg cost 1 work point.
“Auntie, are these eggs fertilized?”
Hens can lay eggs without being fertilized, but only fertilized eggs could hatch chicks.
The auntie immediately nodded.
“Of course! These eggs, thank goodness for my old man and the others at the farm—they pamper those chickens every day with food and care…”
She was clearly someone who liked to chat.
From her chatter, Lin Chu learned that the egg supply at the base had only recently stabilized.
Because of the floods, most livestock were lost. The base’s original 5 hens and 1 rooster were borrowed from Base 1.
Only recently had the newly raised hens matured enough to brood. Egg production was finally up.
Still, they were limited to 100 eggs per day.
Lin Chu had arrived early. The eggs hadn’t sold out yet, so she asked for 20, then looked at the rest of the goods.
The auntie was surprised and reminded her:
“Miss, 20 eggs cost 20 work points…”
This girl looked unfamiliar—how could she have that many points?
But the work point ledger Lin Chu handed over left her speechless.
It was stamped with Mayor Li’s seal: 45 points in total.
Even she and her husband, who both worked at the base, barely earned that much in a whole month.
The auntie, now a bit flustered, asked Lin Chu to wait and went to get someone.
Lin Chu didn’t mind. She knew the woman was just being cautious in case the ledger was forged.
So while waiting, she carefully studied the list of goods available for exchange.
Scallions were great—plant them and they regrow endlessly. Exchange!
Fresh greens—low stock in her inventory. Exchange!
Potatoes could be chopped and planted to grow more. Potato self-sufficiency. Exchange!
Flour had been consumed a lot lately. Low reserves. Exchange!
Sneakers were essential in the apocalypse—running and fighting wore them out quickly. She used to rely on system gifts, parcel looting, or neighbors’ shoe cabinets. Now she could pick her size—must exchange!
Lin Chu quickly decided how to spend all 45 points.
Meanwhile, Aunt Zhao had brought over Wang Rui from his patrol.
“Auntie Zhao, this is Doctor Lin—she saved Assistant Wu’s life last night. Her points were specially approved by Mayor Li. No need to worry—just give her what she wants.”
With Wang Rui’s confirmation, Aunt Zhao no longer hesitated. She fetched everything Lin Chu asked for.
Soon, the counter was piled with goods.
Lin Chu tried on the shoes to confirm—they were a perfect fit.
She had spent exactly 45 points.
Wang Rui, who had been standing aside since being called over, scratched his head watching Lin Chu spend it all in one go.
From the look of it, she wanted a clean break and didn’t plan to stay involved with the base for long.
Then again, capable people tended to be like that—proud and independent.
It only made Wang Rui respect her more.
But Mayor Li had also asked him to find a way to recruit her to the base…
Now that was going to be tricky.
