The End of the World Scavenger: I Win by Turning Waste into Treasure Chapter 70: The Flooded World (25)

When Lin Chu rubbed her face and sat up in bed, the innkeeper called out to her from outside her room:

“Miss, someone is knocking at the door.”

Lin Chu had left the door’s noise-blocking feature on so she could avoid being caught off guard by any sudden disturbances.

Now that she heard someone knocking, she naturally needed to go and check.

She didn’t change her clothes, just put on a pair of shoes and walked out of the shelter.

Peering through the peephole of the original security door, she saw Wang Rui, dressed in a white T-shirt, standing at her door.

After knocking for a while without anyone answering, the neighbors next door had opened their doors to check what was going on.

Seeing Lin Chu in her hospital gown, she felt it wasn’t the best time to answer the door, so she called out:

“Captain Wang, please wait a moment. I’ll change clothes and come right out.”

Upon hearing her voice, Wang Rui’s previously anxious expression relaxed slightly.

“Doctor Lin, no rush. Take your time.”

Knowing it was Wang Rui, Lin Chu’s urgency dissipated. She returned to the shelter, quickly tidied herself up, changed into clean sportswear, and left the shelter.

The innkeeper, Xiao Er, was still with her and was arranged in the bedroom.

Confirming that Xiao Er wouldn’t be seen by Wang Rui, she finally opened the door.

Wang Rui was now standing outside, chatting casually with an elderly neighbor from the opposite door.

When Lin Chu opened the door, Wang Rui immediately stood up straight, and the neighbor stopped chatting.

“Doctor Lin, sorry to disturb your rest.”

Seeing Lin Chu, Wang Rui first apologized.

Lin Chu waved her hand, signaling that it was fine.

It was already past 5 PM.

She had slept for seven hours, which was enough.

“What brings you here to see me?”

“Doctor Liu has something he wants me to pass along. I’m not sure if it’s a good time for you to hear it…”

Wang Rui glanced at the elderly neighbor beside him, then at Lin Chu’s room behind her.

Lin Chu immediately understood his meaning.

Doctor Liu likely wanted to convey something that others shouldn’t hear, and Wang Rui wanted to speak with her privately.

After assessing the situation and confirming she could handle it, Lin Chu moved aside.

“If you don’t mind, Captain Wang, please come in and we can talk.”

Wang Rui knew that Lin Chu was quite cautious, so the fact that she invited him in was already a significant gesture.

He quickly thanked her and hesitated when he noticed his dirty shoes.

Lin Chu, however, said:

“Just come in.”

She usually wore her outdoor shoes in the shelter, so it didn’t matter if the house got dirty.

Wang Rui carefully stepped inside.

The door closed behind him.

Before opening the door, Lin Chu had already closed the doors to the three bedrooms, cutting off any prying eyes.

The house’s original fabric sofa had long been ruined by the flood. Only a few solid wood dining chairs were still usable.

Lin Chu pulled one of the dining chairs out and offered it to Wang Rui, then sat down opposite him.

Wang Rui didn’t glance around unnecessarily; he sat where Lin Chu indicated and fixed his clear eyes on her.

“Doctor Lin, this time when Doctor Liu went to Base 1, he made a big discovery.”

Lin Chu raised an eyebrow, not responding immediately, waiting for him to continue.

Wang Rui paused for a moment, then a faint mocking smile appeared on his lips.

“In the past, the supplies dropped by the government were managed by Assistant Wu’s two cousins, Jiang Da and Jiang Er.”

“Assistant Wu had been working closely with Mayor Li even before the outbreak, a trusted assistant for many years.”

“After the outbreak, he brought his cousins along to handle things.”

“Though everyone didn’t particularly like Jiang Da and Jiang Er, Assistant Wu was a decent guy, so there were no objections.”

“Who would’ve thought, those two are so ungrateful!”

As he spoke further, Wang Rui’s initial sarcasm turned to a gnashing of teeth.

After a few seconds, he realized he was speaking about this to Lin Chu and quickly adjusted his emotions.

“After you warned me last time, I spoke with Mayor Li, and the mayor said they would wait until Assistant Wu recovered and then slowly investigate the matter.”

“But this time, when Doctor Liu went to Base 1, we finally learned the real quantity of supplies that the base has been sending us.”

Lin Chu understood at this point.

They had been kept in the dark by Jiang Da and Jiang Er, and now that Doctor Liu had visited Base 1, they had uncovered the truth behind the supplies they had been receiving.

As for whether Assistant Wu was involved…

That was still unclear.

“How do you plan to handle it?”

At Lin Chu’s question, a trace of determination appeared on Wang Rui’s face.

“Today, the government dropped new supplies.”

“Previously, Assistant Wu was responsible for these, but now that he’s injured, Jiang Da and Jiang Er are afraid of losing their meal ticket, so they’ve already gone to Mayor Li.”

“The mayor’s position is to let them handle it.”

“We’ll catch them red-handed if we can.”

Hearing his plan, Lin Chu nodded.

If it were her, she would’ve done the same.

Catching them in the act, with evidence, there would be no room for Jiang Da and Jiang Er to argue.

Wang Rui still looked somewhat gloomy after discussing the brothers.

“Captain Wang, you didn’t come just for Jiang Da and Jiang Er, did you?”

Lin Chu’s voice snapped Wang Rui out of his reverie.

He looked at her in surprise.

“Doctor Lin, you’re really something. I did come for something else. How did you guess?”

Lin Chu smiled without speaking.

If it were just about Jiang Da and Jiang Er, it wouldn’t warrant a special visit from Wang Rui.

There must be something more important.

Wang Rui, seeing that Lin Chu wasn’t saying anything, didn’t press the issue. Instead, he took an envelope from his pocket and handed it to her.

“This is some information Doctor Liu brought back from Base 1. He asked me to give it to you.”

Upon hearing that it was information from Base 1, Lin Chu was momentarily stunned.

She hadn’t agreed to join their base, so how could they just give her such confidential information?

Noticing her hesitation, Wang Rui, a smart man, quickly guessed what she was thinking.

“Don’t worry, this information is because you treated Assistant Wu. Doctor Liu specifically told me to give it to you.”

Related to Assistant Wu?

That meant it was related to the big fish.

With that thought, Lin Chu stopped hesitating, reached out, and took the envelope, opening it in front of Wang Rui.

Inside, there were a few photos and several pages of paper.

Seeing the contents of the photos, even Lin Chu, who had seen much, couldn’t help but widen her eyes in surprise.
