Wang Rui smiled as he pushed open the door of the first greenhouse in the plantation, leading Lin Chu inside.
“After the flood, nothing is good, except for the land. The vegetable sprouts grow very quickly. In no time, we’ll be able to harvest a crop.”
The first greenhouse was planted with green vegetables, the same kind Lin Chu had exchanged for at the labor point exchange station.
The small green vegetables grew lush and vibrant on the ridge of the greenhouse, full of life and hope.
There was a man bending down, pulling weeds from the ridge. Hearing the sound, he straightened up and looked at them.
His face was covered with deep lines and beads of sweat.
“Captain Wang, you’re here!”
Seeing the man stand up, Wang Rui introduced him to Lin Chu.
“Dr. Lin, this is Zhang Laohan, who is in charge of planting.”
Lin Chu nodded, just about to greet him, when the sweaty man picked up the towel around his neck and quickly wiped his face, looking at her with surprise.
“So, this is the Dr. Lin my wife mentioned?”
Wang Rui chuckled and scolded him lightly.
“Yes, it’s her, it’s her. Zhang Laohan, calm down a bit. Don’t scare our honored guest.”
The honest man quickly clasped his hands in apology.
“Ah, I was just too excited, I heard my wife talking about a very impressive doctor who earned 45 labor points approved by the mayor. Now seeing you in person, I’m too excited. I’m really sorry, Dr. Lin, I…”
Lin Chu waved her hand to stop his further words.
“It’s fine, I don’t mind.”
“I have some questions about planting, and I wanted to ask you, Zhang Laohan.”
When Zhang Laohan heard this, the smile on his face gradually faded, and he glanced nervously at Wang Rui.
“Captain Wang, what does this mean? Are you sending a doctor to plant crops? What about the rest of us?”
Wang Rui immediately realized that he had misunderstood.
The story of Lin Chu saving Assistant Wu’s life with her miraculous skills had already spread through the base. With Mrs. Zhao’s loud mouth, the tale had become more and more exaggerated.
People were speculating about what kind of conditions the base was offering to keep Dr. Lin around.
Zhang Laohan was one of them.
Hearing Lin Chu ask about planting experience, he thought the base might want her to take over his work.
Wang Rui held back a laugh and explained.
“Dr. Lin is asking for advice on planting to grow some vegetables where she’s staying for herself, not to take your job. You can relax.”
When Zhang Laohan heard this, his smile returned, and he scratched his head awkwardly, giving Lin Chu a silly grin.
“Dr. Lin, sorry, I misunderstood.”
“Feel free to ask me anything, I’ll teach you everything I know!”
When Lin Chu heard this, she didn’t hesitate. She took him to the ridge of the field and asked him some planting questions.
At first, Zhang Laohan answered each question, but halfway through, he suddenly slapped his forehead.
“Ah, look at me, forgetting things.”
“Dr. Lin, wait a moment. I’ve recorded the latest planting experiences from the past three months in a notebook. I’ll go get it, and you can take it with you to look at.”
“Once you’ve finished, just return it to me.”
Upon hearing this, Lin Chu’s eyes lit up.
Although her memory was good, it would be even better to have written records.
She could take it back and take pictures with her phone to look at whenever needed.
Wang Rui had been waiting by the side. Hearing Zhang Laohan’s words, he chuckled.
“No need to go through all that trouble. The mayor’s office has a copy machine, one the mayor brought back from Base No. 1.”
“Zhang Laohan, go get the notebook. I’ll take it to the mayor’s office and make a copy. Dr. Lin can take the copy, and you can have your original. How about that?”
Zhang Laohan nodded repeatedly.
“That works, that works. You cultural people sure know how to handle things!”
Both Wang Rui and Lin Chu were amused by Zhang Laohan.
Zhang Laohan went to fetch his notebook.
Wang Rui was about to take Lin Chu to the farm when they heard someone calling him.
“Captain Wang! Captain Wang!”
The person’s footsteps squelched through the mud as they ran.
Out of breath, the person arrived in front of Wang Rui, panting heavily.
“Captain Wang, I finally found you.”
Wang Rui clearly recognized the person. He furrowed his brows, looking at him in confusion.
“Why the hurry? What’s going on?”
The person took a moment to catch his breath and quickly said:
“They said, they said someone fell into the water at the northwest border. You need to go check it out!”
Someone fell into the water?
As the captain of the security team, Wang Rui immediately understood that his top priority now was to save the person.
“Dr. Lin, wait here for Zhang Laohan. When he comes back with the materials, take them to the mayor’s office and wait for me.”
Lin Chu nodded. “Captain Wang, don’t worry about me. I can manage here.”
Wang Rui didn’t waste any more time. He nodded at her and followed the person, running in the direction of the incident.
Without a guide, Lin Chu decided to wander around nearby so that she could see Zhang Laohan as soon as he returned.
She noticed that the other greenhouse not far away was growing cabbage, and she decided to go take a look.
But after a few steps, she stopped.
There was movement.
Was it Zhang Laohan returning?
Lin Chu turned to look in the direction Zhang Laohan had left, but she didn’t see anyone.
But she was sure she hadn’t misheard.
Since taking the body modification pill, she had been able to hear sounds clearly from over 50 meters away.
It wasn’t Zhang Laohan…
Lin Chu thought about Wang Rui, who had just been called away, her eyes narrowing slightly.
If she listened carefully, she could hear two heavy breathing sounds.
All around her were greenhouses.
The greenhouses were made of glass, transparent on all sides, with almost no places to hide.
If someone were hiding…
Lin Chu’s gaze swept to the left front. Between two greenhouses, there was a small building that looked like an outhouse.
It wasn’t large, no more than 1.5 meters wide and 2 meters high.
That was the only blind spot in the area.
Her gaze quickly shifted to other directions.
After standing still and observing for a moment, Lin Chu decided to continue heading toward the greenhouse she had originally planned to visit.
Just as she was about to pass the small outhouse-like building, Lin Chu silently counted down in her mind.

At the moment her countdown ended, two men rushed out from behind the small building, one in front and one behind, trapping Lin Chu in the middle.
“Stupid woman, let me show you what—”
Jiang Er hadn’t finished his threat when the woman in front of him disappeared.
Immediately after, a powerful force hit the back of his head, sending his body forward uncontrollably.
“Boom—”
A dull sound rang in Jiang Er’s ears.
In just an instant, it felt like his head was about to detach from his body.
