Chapter 43 Let Me Go
Qin Gang hummed a little tune as he walked home from the state-run hotel. After selling his motorcycle, he decided not to even ride his bicycle anymore, lest people find out he’d sold his motorcycle to raise money.
However, in four or five days, the funds would be back, and he could buy a new motorcycle. For business, appearances were important. He had planned to make a big show of buying it, not only to impress his business partners, but also Gu Yunchi.
As for Zhao Lan, he had long forgotten her. At the time, he’d been looking for something new. Zhao Lan was far superior to Gu Yunchi in terms of dress, style, and charm. Besides, he wanted a son, and he couldn’t let Gu Yunchi have one openly. Having a child with Zhao Lan would be the same; he had plenty of money to support another lover and child.
If Jiang Yiyi hadn’t exposed his intentions, Zhao Lan wouldn’t have been suspicious. After the girl was discovered, he would have found a way to have her get an abortion. But Zhao Lan was now wary; whenever he mentioned going to the hospital for a checkup, she would make a fuss. At the time, he was too busy raising money to worry about it.
A few days ago, his business stabilized. He made an excuse to go to the hospital to check on the baby, and Zhao Lan believed him and went with him. When they learned it was a girl, how could he possibly keep it? He immediately bought pregnancy-sustaining and abortion pills from the hospital and switched the packaging.
That day, he deliberately slipped away, and in the past two days, he hadn’t even thought about going to the hospital. With money, what kind of woman couldn’t he find? Even if Zhao Lan wanted to return to him, he wouldn’t have her.
“Qin Gang?”
Qin Gang subconsciously responded, but before he could turn around, he received a heavy blow to the back of his head.
…
When Qin Gang woke up, he saw a chair and a man sitting on it. The man was twenty-five or six years old, casual, unruly, and his gaze seemed to tear Qin Gang apart piece by piece.
Five or six men in black, about the same age as him, stood nearby. They were strong and clearly not ordinary people.
He instinctively felt danger and struggled to back away. “What…what do you want?”
The man didn’t speak, just gestured, and two men immediately stepped forward to restrain him. The man slowly stood up, walked in front of him, and punched him in the abdomen. Qin Gang cried out in pain, but before the sound could escape, his mouth was covered.
Another punch, and Qin Gang’s body twisted in pain.
Then another punch, and another. Each punch landed in the same spot until Qin Gang’s blood spattered on the man’s face, and he stopped.
The two men holding Qin Gang released him, and he collapsed on the ground like a puddle of mud.
The man reached out, and someone handed him a scalpel. The man squatted down and gestured at Qin Gang’s body. “Tell me, should I remove your kidneys first or your heart?”
“Spare me, spare me!”
Qin Gang trembled and crawled backward in terror.
This was the man who had caused his younger sister so much suffering. Zhao Qin wanted to tear Qin Gang to pieces, but he couldn’t take a life.
“Twenty thousand. Gather it within three days, and someone will contact you. If you can’t…”
The man gestured with the scalpel on his body, “I’ll take your body parts one by one.”
…
In the hospital, her son’s condition gradually stabilized, and Zhang Mei’s anxious heart gradually calmed down. She held her daughter fearfully, touched her son’s head, and tears streamed down her face.
When the Zhang family had kicked them out, they hadn’t even given her a penny of her husband’s death benefits. She had never hated them so much. As long as her two children were by her side, she could endure any hardship.
But now, she wished she could cut the Zhang family into a thousand pieces.
Seeing her cry, her little girl pouted and wanted to cry too, but her little mouth was swollen, and every movement caused her pain, distorting her whole face.
“Mom, it hurts!”
Perhaps sensing that the danger had passed, the little girl uttered her first complaint in days. Zhang Mei didn’t even bother to wipe her tears and quickly comforted her daughter. “Mom will blow on it, and it won’t hurt anymore, Ya Ya.”
This scene was heartbreaking.
Jiang Yiyi’s eyes were moist. She left the ward, closed the door, and sat next to Gu Yunze.
Gu Yunze put his arm around her back, gently hugging her and letting her lean on his shoulder.
Zhao Jin came out of the ward and saw this scene. The two were intimate, seemingly husband and wife.
Her uncle said that Gu Yunze’s wife had signed the surgery form and paid the money, allowing his younger sister to have surgery in time. The Zhao family had to repay this kindness.
He went to find a nurse and asked about the relationship between Gu Yunze, the woman, and the people in the ward.
The nurse didn’t know.
Zhao Jin originally intended to pay all the hospital fees if the people in the ward were Gu Yunze’s family, as a partial repayment of the favor. But now that the nurse didn’t know, he didn’t rashly pay the money.
After thinking for a moment, Zhao Jin walked towards the couple. Before he got close, he heard Jiang Yiyi say, “You accompany Sister Zhang Mei to report this to the police later; I’ll stay here with the children.”
“Okay.”
Report to the police?
Thinking of the woman following Gu Yunze, holding the little girl whose face was swollen from being beaten, he knew something had to be done.
“I can help you with this.”
He said.
As he spoke, he had already walked up to them.
Jiang Yiyi looked at him questioningly.
“He’s Zhao Lan’s older brother.”
Gu Yunze said.
Zhao Lan’s older brother?
Jiang Yiyi looked at Zhao Jin. His aura was not inferior to Gu Yunze’s, but he had a more refined demeanor than Gu Yunze, which was not something an ordinary family would possess. Zhao Lan, with such a good family background, became Qin Gang’s mistress—was she crazy?
“How can you help?”
Gu Yunze stood up, blocking Jiang Yiyi’s view of Zhao Jin.
Zhang Mei’s matter had to be resolved from the root, otherwise, she would continue to be harassed by the Zhang family. He didn’t have that many connections, but the man in front of him might have. Even if he didn’t, Zhao Lan’s uncle did. That man carried the authority of a high-ranking official and had a private car, indicating a high position.
“Can you tell me what happened first?”
Gu Yunze said to Jiang Yiyi, “Go in and see if Sister Zhang Mei has calmed down?”
It was best to hear it from the person involved.
Jiang Yiyi went in and soon opened the ward door, gesturing for the two to come in as well.
A frail boy lay on the bed, his age unclear, his face flushed, and an IV drip in his hand. Next to him was the woman he had seen, holding the little girl. When she saw him, the little girl seemed scared and hugged the woman tightly.
“Sister Zhang Mei, tell this comrade what happened in detail, starting from when you were kicked out of your home. Keep it brief.”
Jiang Yiyi said.
Zhang Mei didn’t know what the man did, but since Jiang Yiyi asked her to speak, she did.
…
After listening to Zhang Mei, Zhao Jin said, “Leave this to me.”
He went to his uncle’s house.
His aunt stayed at the hospital to take care of Zhao Lan; only his uncle was at home.
“Uncle, I have something to tell you.”
Zhao Jin recounted everything Zhang Mei had said to Jiang Zhe, almost word for word. After listening, Jiang Zhe’s face was very grim.
He had been the county magistrate for two years and believed he had governed Qingping County well, but he never expected such a thing to happen.
He picked up the phone and made a call.
