The Cold-Faced Officer and His Chic Military Wife Made a Fortune in the 1980s Chapter 13

Chapter 13: Yes, Yes, Yes! You’re Right

“Uncle San went out of town and can’t come back for now. Just stay happily at my place.”

“I’ll take you to the hospital later.” Gu Congshuang coaxed Yi Yun like a child.

Yi Yun nodded. Ye Bei drove Gu Congshuang and Yi Yun to the hospital.

Since it was a small four-seater car, Gu Qinshan, Li Yuqin, and Gu Congli had to watch them leave.

Gu Congli’s eyes sparkled; he was completely captivated by Ye Bei’s car.

“Brother-in-law’s driving the latest Lada! Look at the taillights, so pretty! The lines of the car are so smooth.”

“It’s not official yet! Don’t call him brother-in-law. Remember how you treated your sister before,” Li Yuqin worried.

“We’re family now, Mom. You have to be nice to my sister, or Brother-in-law won’t let me drive his car. I want to drive now!”

Li Yuqin and Gu Qinshan exchanged glances, deciding to treat Gu Congshuang better.

They left the hospital in the evening. Yi Yun, exhausted, rested in the back seat. Ye Bei thoughtfully covered her with a military green blanket.

A pale crescent moon hung in the sky.

The test results weren’t ideal. The doctor sighed as they left, “In the later stages of this disease, she might forget you, even become incontinent. Family members must be patient and caring.”

Gu Congshuang looked back at her grandmother, sleeping soundly, a childlike smile on her lips. What was she dreaming about?

Gu Congshuang felt a pang of pain. If she hadn’t transmigrated, she might not have had the chance to care for her grandmother. But the situation in the book was terrible.

The feeling of being forgotten by loved ones was unbearable.

Fortunately, Grandma was still alive; that was the greatest comfort.

Gu Congshuang leaned against the car window. The car drove through the mountains, the silvery moonlight outlining her solitary figure against the deep blue sky.

She wanted to say something to Ye Bei, but didn’t know how to express her feelings.

Ye Bei gripped the steering wheel, his eyes focused on the road.

“I know what you want to say. Like I said before, I’ll fully support you. Don’t worry.”

His low, magnetic voice reached her.

Gu Congshuang looked up at him. His face was as resolute as ever, like an old friend she’d known for decades, not someone she’d only met twice.

“Why are you so good to me?”

“Don’t you remember? When we first met, you grabbed my hand and said I was your boyfriend?”

“Now, even if you want to run away, you can’t.”

Guilt washed over her. She only wanted to earn money and leave, using the confession as an opportunity.

She had lied to him, but he seemed to be taking it seriously.

It felt surreal.

The next morning, Grandma prepared breakfast again, but she forgot to turn off the stove. The porridge was burnt to a crisp.

Li Yuqin lost her temper, “She’s really senile.”

Grandma Yi Yun, like a scolded child, cowered, unable to respond.

Li Yuqin was about to scold her again when she saw Gu Congshuang approaching, her face cold and menacing, like she was about to fight.

Remembering yesterday’s events, Li Yuqin quickly covered her mouth.

“Oh, such a small thing, why would you do it yourself? I’ll make breakfast.”

Li Yuqin was lazy, but she dared not provoke Gu Congshuang. If Gu Congshuang refused to marry, the loss would be huge.

Her senile mother-in-law would be going to Seagull Island with Gu Congshuang soon. Taking care of her for a few days wasn’t a big deal, and they’d get a room in the ancestral home.

Li Yuqin’s anger vanished.

“Grandma, you don’t have to do such hard work. My mother loves making breakfast for us. Mom, am I right?” Gu Congshuang asked with a forced smile.

Li Yuqin mumbled, “Yes, yes, yes! You’re right.”

“When is Ye Bei coming to formally propose?”

“Tomorrow. He was supposed to come yesterday, but this happened. He’s coming tomorrow with his parents and is buying gifts now.”

Li Yuqin’s eyes lit up, and she happily went to make breakfast.

After breakfast, Gu Congshuang, worried about Yi Yun staying home alone, had her sit in the back seat with Gu Congli to drive passengers.

Gu Congli was unhappy; it affected their business.

Gu Congshuang had anticipated this and gave him a cold stare.

For Brother-in-law’s car, I’ll endure!

For my own car, I’ll endure!

For future riches, I’ll endure, endure, endure!

Gu Congli gritted his teeth, closed the car door, and drove to the airport.

Business was better than the previous two days. Passengers were initially hesitant about Yi Yun being in the back, but after hearing the story, they were sympathetic.

They even praised Gu Congshuang’s kindness and gave extra tips, making Gu Congli happy. He started asking about the car’s features.

“I’m busy now. I’ll teach you later.”

“But it’s the third day. If you don’t teach me, I’ll have to return the car to the factory.”

“Okay, after I drop off the next passenger, I’ll explain everything.”

Gu Congshuang deliberately delayed. Gu Congli waited impatiently.

He couldn’t drive and needed driving lessons, which cost thousands, unaffordable for their family.

A man in sunglasses and black clothes approached, “Lets go to the small park on Tianqiao South Road.”

Gu Congli’s eyes lit up. The Park was at least twenty kilometers away; this was a huge opportunity.

Gu Congshuang glanced at the man in the rearview mirror; he looked familiar, but she couldn’t place him.

“Okay, please sit tight.” Gu Congshuang was hesitant; the place was remote, and the man seemed intimidating.

“Are you afraid I can’t pay?” The man pulled out his wallet, showing hundreds of yuan, with more banknotes in his pocket.

Gu Congli was shocked by the disparity in wealth.

“My friend is about to give birth. I’m going to pick her up and need you to bring her back.”

Gu Congshuang thought Gu Congli was there, so it shouldn’t be a problem. Plus, she could help someone. This fare would cover Grandma’s medical expenses for years. She agreed.

Twenty kilometers wasn’t far, but in that era, transportation wasn’t convenient. After driving through a section of the city, they entered a dirt road.

The man in sunglasses was silent. Gu Congshuang felt uneasy because she saw him glancing at her in the rearview mirror several times.
