Chapter 53 – Sick

“Aunt Chang, has he taken the medicine the doctor prescribed?”

Yue Han reached out to take the bowl of porridge and asked the housemaid.

The two nannies nearby were hired temporarily by the Bai family for this place, but the maid before him was a long-time employee of the Bai family. She had taken care of Bai Xichen since he was a child. Now that Bai Xichen had been sent here, he was entirely entrusted to her care. The Bai family didn’t feel comfortable leaving the child in the rough hands of Yue Han, who usually lived a rather coarse life. Besides, Bai Xichen had been intermittently sick for the past two weeks, which was why she had come along.

Of course, the Bai family had access to the best private hospitals. He had already been examined there, and all his indicators were perfectly normal before being sent here. Still, he kept getting sick every few days.

Who knew if those disreputable fortune-tellers were right—maybe the Bai family really had attracted something. After all, the things happening recently had been strangely ominous.

“This morning he was feeling nauseous and refused to eat,” Aunt Chang said, her face full of heartache as she looked inside. After all, she had raised him from a young age, and being older now, she couldn’t bring herself to be too strict with the child.

“Alright. Aunt Chang, I see the kitchen is still cooking something. You all keep going. I’ll go check on him.”

Even though he hadn’t had much interaction with the Bai family in the past, Yue Han was still quite attentive when it came to taking care of his younger cousin.

But as soon as he turned on the light, he saw a small hand reach out from under the blanket. The hand was tiny, its skin a pale, cool white, making the bruises from needle marks on the back of it appear especially stark and pitiful. The child curled his fingers around the only small pillow left on the bed and threw it hard toward the doorway.

Yue Han dodged to the side, glanced down at the porridge in his hand, then looked at the pillow that hit the wall and dropped to the floor. “Xiao Chen, you have to eat something.”

Yue Han felt like he was turning into a nagging old woman. He walked to the bedside, lowered his head to look at the small lump buried under the blanket, and reached out to give him a gentle nudge.

The next second, his hand was pushed away by another small hand.

That little hand was shockingly cold, making Yue Han shiver on contact.

“Go away. I don’t want to eat.”

A weak, childlike voice spoke again. The blanket rustled, and a small head poked out.

His hair was already curly, now even messier. His round, cat-like eyes were tinged red at the corners. His delicate little face looked pale, but his lips were a deep red. Long eyelashes fluttered slightly, and fine beads of sweat dotted his forehead and the tip of his nose. One look and it was clear he felt awful.

“Why are your hands so cold? Are you feeling chilly? Should I ask them to turn the heater up a bit more?”

Yue Han hurriedly set the porridge aside and looked at the little young master, who was sitting up with an irritable and impatient expression in his eyes.

To be honest, even though he was only three years old, it was already obvious he was going to grow up to be very handsome. His features were delicate without being feminine, elegant yet carrying an air of noble aloofness. There was also a touch of arrogant coldness in his demeanor. It was rare to see him throw a tantrum. Yue Han couldn’t understand how the Bai family had raised such a child.

“I’m not cold. Can you just let me be alone for a while?”

His voice was weak and a bit hoarse. His large cat-like eyes looked over at Yue Han, while his hands clutched tightly at the blanket.

“No can do. You need to eat a little porridge after taking your medicine before you can go back to sleep. Otherwise, I’ll have to take you back to the hospital.”

Ah yes, another reason the Bai family sent Bai Xichen to him was because this little young master really hated going to the hospital.
