Xin’er’s Escape from a Land of Famine Chapter 9

Chapter 9 – Inside the Ruined Temple

Ah Da took a few steps back in disgust, thinking, Humans are really filthy, relieving themselves wherever they please.

The old woman, still terrified, had her hand clamped tightly over her mouth. Her face was flushed red from holding her breath.

Wang Shi was still sitting beside her husband, crying. Of the dozen people who had surrounded Xin’er earlier, only the old, weak, sick, or disabled were left.

Even those who survived Ah Da’s attack had been bitten badly. Without medicine, they wouldn’t live long anyway.

Xin’er didn’t even spare them a glance.
“Let’s go, Ah Da. Don’t play with them anymore. It’ll be dark soon.”

After they had walked a long distance, they could still faintly hear cries and curses behind them—ghastly wailing, mixed with bitter insults.

But instead of getting angry, Xin’er felt pleased.
Serves them right. Hmph.

She and Ah Da kept walking, until the sky began to darken.

Just then, a faint light appeared in the distance. Following it, they discovered a ruined temple.

Inside the temple were quite a few people resting. Some were cooking over fires, and kids ran and played through the broken halls.

From time to time, the cries of disobedient children being scolded or spanked by their parents could be heard.

Xin’er and Ah Da slowly walked into the temple. The moment they stepped inside, all conversation stopped. Every eye turned to them.

Xin’er paid them no mind. She found a relatively clean corner, tidied it up, laid down some straw, and unpacked the bundle on Ah Da’s back. She spread out a blanket over the straw.

The people nearby began whispering among themselves.

Some had lewd looks in their eyes as they stared at Xin’er.

Just then, a little boy exclaimed, “Mom, look! That dog is so cute—I want one too!”

His mother slapped his hand. “Want what? Aren’t you afraid it’ll eat you?”

The boy started crying from the smack. His mother dragged him away, and he sat down, sobbing, still sneaking glances at Ah Da.

In one dark corner of the temple, a young girl glared at Xin’er with intense jealousy.
Why does she get to wear such nice clothes? Why doesn’t she seem to lack food? She’s pale, clean, and even her dog is plump and pretty—living better than me!

She looked around at the men beside her—filthy, ugly, and abusive. They beat her whenever they felt like it. Worse, she had to sleep with them.

We’re both girls. Why did she end up like that, while I ended up here?

She used to be the daughter of a martial escort agency’s boss. She even had a bit of martial arts training. But she was quickly overpowered and captured by these men.

If anyone from the escort agency heard her call herself skilled, they’d probably laugh. All her so-called “skills” were them going easy on her. She couldn’t even beat a beggar in a real fight.

She had never suffered like this in her life—but now, every day, she was violated by these animals.

The more she looked at Xin’er, the angrier she got. Bearing the pain, she slowly made her way toward the main fire where a man called Feng San was sitting—the leader of the group.

Deliberately swaying her hips, she sat down next to him, placing her hand on his thigh and leaning softly against him.

Feng San enjoyed her touch. He tilted her chin up.
“What’s this, little beauty? Missing me already?”

The others laughed and teased, “Big bro’s got charm!”

The girl—her name was Li Li—giggled, pushed his hand playfully, and said, “You’re so bad, Brother Feng.”

Then she leaned in and whispered, “Brother Feng, do you see that pretty little girl over there?”

“I see her. So what?”

“She’s so beautiful… doesn’t Brother Feng want her?”

Feng San smirked and caressed Li Li. “What’s this, Li Li? Jealous?”

“Brother Feng! So many people are watching!” she said, pretending to be shy. “Wait until they’re asleep… then I’ll take good care of you.”

Her flirtation worked like a charm. He grinned and said, “Silly girl, I’ll satisfy you now.” He got up and pulled her along, heading toward the back of the temple.

As they walked away, Li Li turned her head to give Xin’er a sinister smile.

The other men stared hungrily, whispering, “When Big Bro’s done, we’ll take turns. Let’s decide who’s next…”

Soon after, sounds that were not meant for public ears came from the rear of the ruined temple.

Hearing the noises, the women inside the temple blushed deeply and quickly covered their children’s ears, afraid they might hear something they shouldn’t.

The older ones muttered curses.
“Shameless little tramp… filthy wench…”

Meanwhile, Xin’er had already finished setting up her spot and was lying down. She heard the noise but simply thought someone was getting beaten again.

She thought to herself, Not my business. I’m not getting involved.
