Chapter 38: Vacation
The sky gradually darkened.
Grandma Guo and Wen Wan chatted for a while, cleaned up the kitchen, and then went back to their rooms to wash up and rest.
As soon as she entered her room, Wen Wan locked the door and immediately went into her space.
Picking up her hoe, she started digging potatoes and white radishes. As she dug, a guess formed in her mind.
The potato slices she had just fried might have tasted different from ordinary ones because they were grown in her space.
She didn’t know if it was due to the seeds or the soil in the space, but it was a great surprise to her either way.
After more than two hours, Wen Wan wiped the sweat from her forehead, selected “Sell,” and sold most of the potatoes and radishes she had harvested to the mall. She kept ten kilograms of potatoes and radishes, planning to take some home when Wen Jianguo came to town.
Next, Wen Wan quickly planted the seeds in the ground, hoping for an early harvest and an early upgrade.
She hummed a little tune: Money loves me, I love money, money is pouring in from all directions…
After finishing the work in the field, Wen Wan rolled up her sleeves and poured feed into the pasture. She was now looking forward to her chicks laying eggs soon.
At ten o’clock that night, Wen Wan finally lay down in bed and fell into a sweet dream within minutes.
…
Time flew by, and six days passed quickly.
Wen Wan had basically familiarized herself with all the goods in the supply and marketing cooperative, even knowing how the fabric counter worked.
“Xiaowan, I need to go to the hospital this afternoon. Can you watch my counter?” Chen Xiu asked Wen Wan during their lunch break.
Wen Wan was indifferent, but she pretended to be hesitant. “Sister Chen, I’m not very good at it yet. I don’t want to make mistakes.” In the workplace, one must learn to hide their weaknesses.
“You won’t make mistakes. My counter only has seasonings; everything is accounted for.” Chen Xiu was a little anxious. “Besides, Sister Wang and Yumei are there. You can ask them if you don’t know anything.”
In the past, the three of them rotated at the counter.
Wang Fenglai rolled her eyes and curled her lips. “Don’t ask me. I won’t help. I’m not a high school student.” Hmph, she disliked anyone who got along well with Wen Wan.
Chen Xiu’s face darkened, and her eyes were filled with longing and pleading as she looked at Wen Wan.
A smile played on Wen Wan’s lips as she said soothingly, “Sister Chen, don’t worry. Yumei is here if I don’t know something.”
“Yes, I’m here too. Sister Chen, don’t worry,” Li Yumei echoed.
Chen Xiu breathed a sigh of relief, packing her things and repeatedly thanking them. “Xiaowan, Yumei, thank you for your help today.”
Seeing Wang Fenglai watching the show from the side, Chen Xiu was filled with dissatisfaction and anger. They had been colleagues for years, but Wang Fenglai was so uncooperative.
Watching Chen Xiu leave in a hurry, Wen Wan treated Wang Fenglai as invisible, not even glancing at her. She deliberately moved her chair to the other side, turning her back to Wang Fenglai to read her book.
Speaking of the book, she had to thank Zhou Haoting. After he went to the army, he called home.
During the conversation, Zhou Haoting revealed that he had a friend at the town’s middle school and told Wen Wan to look for him if she needed anything.
She quickly used her connections and borrowed an agricultural book from him.
“Some people are so pretentious. If they have the ability, they should go to university,” Wang Fenglai sarcastically sneered, almost directly naming Wen Wan.
Wen Wan closed the book, a flash of anger in her eyes. “Wang Fenglai, stop beating around the bush. If you have something to say, say it directly.”
Stared at by Wen Wan’s sharp gaze, Wang Fenglai’s eyes shifted nervously. She mumbled, “I wasn’t talking about you.”
She was terrified. She felt like she was being targeted by a wild beast, afraid that if she said something wrong, Wen Wan would pull out a knife.
“Wang Fenglai, I’m telling you this once and for all. Don’t try that with me. I, Wen Wan, am not someone you can easily mess with,” Wen Wan said calmly but with a sharp warning.
Wang Fenglai was so scared she didn’t dare to speak, timidly nodding her head. She could feel that Wen Wan wasn’t joking.
Li Yumei quietly gave Wen Wan a thumbs-up. She had thought they were going to fight and almost called Manager Wu to stop them.
Wen Wan smiled. She could rest tomorrow. She was in a good mood today and didn’t want to bother with Wang Fenglai.
Early that morning, before dawn, she went to the food station and bought two kilograms of pork. She had traded for the meat coupons and bought some other seasonings, plus potatoes and cucumbers, filling a whole back basket.
She had bought several spring onion pancakes, and she had become familiar with Zhang Tao. Sometimes, she would ask Zhang Tao to keep an eye out for things, and she would just pick them up.
“Xiaowan, Xiaowan, when do you get off work?” Wen Jianguo called out as soon as he reached the entrance of the supply and marketing cooperative.
Hearing the familiar voice, Wen Wan stood up abruptly, waving with a smile. “Big Brother, I’ll be done in a while. Come in and sit for a while.”
“I’ll be guarding the bicycle outside.” Wen Jianguo replied honestly. The security wasn’t very good these days; petty theft was common.
Seeing the sweat on Wen Jianguo’s face, Wen Wan, using the back basket as cover, took out a pack of biscuits from her space.
“Big Brother, have some biscuits to fill your stomach.”
These were defective biscuits she had exchanged with Li Yumei; they didn’t require coupons.
Even though they were defective biscuits, they were basically all distributed internally within the supply and marketing cooperative.
Wen Jianguo didn’t stand on ceremony. He took the biscuits and ate two. A young man could eat a lot. He was only twenty-three or four years old and could eat a lot.
After waiting for more than half an hour, as soon as six o’clock arrived, Wen Wan quickly started to clean up the things on the counter.
She counted the items and submitted the form. Seeing that others were still cleaning up, Wen Wan said goodbye to Wu Sen, picked up her back basket, and left with Wen Jianguo.
“Yumei, I remember Xiaowan’s basket was quite full, wasn’t it?” Wu Sen doubted his eyes. Wen Wan could lift it with one hand; something didn’t seem right.
Li Yumei was busy counting, without raising her head, she casually replied, “I don’t remember.”
Wu Sen choked. He must have seen wrong. A young girl like Xiaowan shouldn’t be that strong.
Wen Wan, who had walked far away, didn’t know that she had almost revealed her great strength.
“Xiaowan, what did you buy?” Wen Jianguo took the back basket and tied it to the bicycle. He used a lot of effort to lift it.
Wen Wan said indifferently, “Just some meat and vegetables. I bought everything we needed, and even some we didn’t need.”
“You bought meat.” Wen Jianguo licked his lips, his saliva starting to flow.
Wen Wan nodded and patted Wen Jianguo’s back. “Big Brother, let’s go quickly. If we go back late, we won’t be able to eat the meat.”
