Chapter 13
“I thought Shu Wan had gotten better, but it turns out she’s still lying.”
“I think we should listen to what Shu Wan says.” Yan Lili said.
“Hey, didn’t you dislike Shu Wan? Why did you change your personality today?”
Yan Lili blushed and was too embarrassed to say that she was grateful for what she had received.
Listening to the whispers around her, Shu Wan’s expression didn’t change much. She asked Shu Fangfang: “Du Wendong told you, how much money did he borrow?”
“Fifteen yuan.” Shu Fangfang shouted out the prepared answer.
She had thought carefully about the amount of money, and it was neither too little to arouse suspicion nor too little to get the most money back.
Shu Wan heard this and slowly shook her head, “Sister, you were deceived by him.”
“Impossible.” Shu Fangfang flatly denied.
“Du Wendong has come to me to borrow money almost ten times in the past few months. As you said, he borrowed fifteen dollars in total. On average, he only borrowed one dollar and fifty cents each time. Big sister, do you believe it?”
Shu Fangfang’s face looked grim. She hadn’t even thought of this. But when did Shu Wan become smart?
Shu Wan continued, “Think about it, the round-trip bus fare is 0.1 yuan, and you only borrow 1.5 yuan?”
Everyone’s expression changed slightly, and it was obvious that what Shu Wan said was more credible.
Who would believe that someone would come all the way to borrow money just for one dollar and fifty cents?
Shu Fangfang secretly thought that this was not good, but still stubbornly retorted that she had given Du Wendong 30 yuan today and she must get the money back.
Shu Fangfang gritted her teeth and said, “Even if Du Wendong didn’t tell the truth, I can’t lend you more than a hundred yuan!”
After saying this, Shu Wan showed a hurt expression, “Big sister, why would you rather believe outsiders than me? Do I need to covet this little money from you?”
“Which of the clothes and shoes you and your nephews are wearing was not bought for you by me with the money I saved from eating and drinking?”
“There are also cotton-padded clothes and quilts for the winter, white flour, pork, fruits and snacks for daily use. If you need anything, I will go to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy it. The expenses in a year are far more than a hundred yuan. Do I need to be greedy for your few dozen yuan?”
To Shu Fangfang, Shu Wan’s explanation sounded like showing off. Showing off Huo Zhengye’s abilities and mocking Yu Chengcai for being just a logistics guy.
She clenched her fists at her sides to hide the unwillingness in her eyes, and when she looked up again, her eyes were full of pleading, which made people feel pitiful.
“Your brother-in-law is just a logistics soldier in the army. He has a low salary and is not as capable as Captain Huo. This money is nothing to you and Captain Huo, but to me, it is the savings of the whole family. Second sister, can you return the money to me?”
Shu Fangfang’s voice was filled with grief, and many people looked distressed.
“Sister, I don’t have any money.”
Shu Wan spread her hands, “Besides, who says one hundred yuan is worthless? This is a lot of money for us.”
“Besides, this money was earned by Captain Huo, and he paid with his life. I have no right to dispose of it at will.”
Shu Fangfang didn’t believe it and thought Shu Wan didn’t give it to her on purpose. She looked at Shu Wan with disappointment and full of accusations.
“I know you blame me because of Du Wendong. Do you remember when you were little, your mother didn’t care about you, and I took you out to play and took care of you. I carried you to see the doctor when you had a fever, and I saved you when you fell into the water.”
Shu Wan’s eyes flashed with sarcasm. Not to mention how much truth there was in Shu Fangfang’s care, the original owner was repeatedly coerced by “favors” and did all kinds of stupid things, becoming a nuisance in the compound and losing her reputation.
The original owner didn’t fall for Shu Fangfang’s tricks, but she wouldn’t.
What’s more, what the original owner did for Shu Fangfang was enough to offset all that care.
Shu Wan held her head and cried, “Big sister, what do you want? Do you want me to borrow money from all over the compound to pay you back?”
Shu Fangfang’s face changed and she rushed forward to cover Shu Wan’s mouth.
I never expected that Shu Wan not only did not compromise, but instead revealed the matter of borrowing money.
“You told me to hold on to Huo Zhengye, so I listened to you and gave you all the money. I made a big scene to attract attention, and threatened him to go home by fighting.”
“But the result is that my relationship with him has become worse and worse, and my reputation has been ruined. Big sister, are you really doing this for my own good?”
“Sister, I want to start a new life. Please give me a chance. I don’t want to lend money to Captain Huo and embarrass myself again!”
Shu Wan’s words were full of tears, grievance and resentment, and everyone’s eyes changed when they looked at Shu Fangfang.
Could it be that Shu Wan was causing trouble in the compound and it was Shu Fangfang who was instigating her?
Shu Fangfang denied in panic, “I don’t know what you are talking about. It was obviously you who did it. Don’t put the blame on me.”
Huo Zhengye had just finished training when someone came up to him, had a brief conversation with him, then strode away with a gloomy expression.
On the way back, I happened to meet Yu Chengcai.
Yu Chengcai is Shu Fangfang’s husband. When he returned home, he didn’t see Shu Fangfang, but only a hungry child.
After comforting the child, he went out to look for someone and happened to meet Huo Zhengye.
“Zhengye, have you seen Fangfang?” Yu Chengcai asked.
Huo Zhengye whispered, “Follow me.”
Yu Chengcai saw that Huo Zhengye had a frosty face and a hint of depression, and he couldn’t help but murmur.
Could it be that something happened to Shu Fangfang? Thinking of this, Yu Chengcai quickened his pace.
When the two arrived, they saw Shu Wan and Shu Fangfang in the crowd.
At this moment, there were a few strands of grass stuck to Shu Fangfang’s delicate permed hair, her made-up face was gray, and there were several gray marks on her body. She looked extremely disheveled.
In contrast, Shu Wan is clean and tidy, in stark contrast to Shu Fangfang.
Huo Zhengye’s eyes dimmed, and his aura became even colder.
Yu Chengcai felt uncomfortable seeing Shu Fangfang in such a miserable state, but he didn’t think it was Shu Wan who did it. He knew how much Shu Wan cared about her sister Shu Fangfang.
“Let’s go and take a look first.”
Huo Zhengye and Yu Chengcai pushed through the crowd and heard Shu Fangfang’s voice clearly.
“Shu Wan, I am willing to help you pay back the money, I just hope you can return the rest to me.”
“Forget about you lying to me yesterday about having Du Wendong’s IOU and taking the hundred dollars from me. I’m your sister, and I’m willing to help you.”
Huo Zhengye’s black eyes were as cold as a chill wind, and his face was frighteningly dark.
Shu Wan shrank her neck, feeling inexplicably cold.
She had her back to Huo Zhengye and couldn’t see anyone.
Shu Fangfang on the opposite side had already seen Huo Zhengye. From the corner of her eye she saw that his face was as gloomy as water, but the corners of his mouth were raised in smugness.
She did it on purpose to let Huo Zhengye know that Shu Wan had taken the hundred yuan. Although she was “generous” enough to give the money to help Shu Wan pay it back, given Huo Zhengye’s character, he would definitely return the hundred yuan in full.
“I don’t have money. Even if I had the money, I wouldn’t give it to you.” Shu Wan refused directly.
When Shu Fangfang saw that Huo Zhengye’s face had turned even darker, she felt delighted and raised her voice a few degrees.
“It doesn’t matter if you don’t pay me back, but you can pay back the money owed to my other sisters-in-law first.”
Seeing that Shu Wan didn’t move, Shu Fangfang was surprised and said, “I just gave you the money yesterday, a full 108 yuan. You didn’t spend it all when you went to the city, did you? Didn’t we agree to pay you back first?”
Shu Fangfang deliberately spoke loudly so that everyone around her could hear her clearly. She was so absorbed in what she said that she did not notice the strange looks on the faces of the military wives.
“Brother-in-law, why are you here?”
Shu Fangfang seemed to have just seen Huo Zhengye. After being surprised, she explained in a panic, “Shu Wan just made a mistake out of greed. She knows she was wrong. You must not be disappointed in her and don’t take it to heart.”
After saying that, he glared at Shu Wan and said, “You are too willful. No matter what, you should return the money to everyone first.”
On the surface, every word of these words was spoken out of consideration for Shu Wan, and to help explain, but the military wives who knew the truth felt something was wrong.
Isn’t this just putting the blame on Shu Wan?
Huo Zhengye looked past Shu Fangfang and cast his sharp eyes on Shu Wan. “You say.”
