Since Luo Yunzhe had gone abroad on a business trip, Luo Chenfeng was forced to take over at the office; the second brother was off filming, and the third had been called back to school, leaving only Su Wanru at home.
Hearing footsteps, Su Wanru looked up from the TV. “Yanyan’s back. This must be Ningning, right? What a beautiful girl.”
Before Jiang Yining’s arrival, Luo Yunyan had already told Su Wanru about her and the other two children surnamed Jiang—her most important friends.
Back then, while Luo Yunyan had been abducted, six-year-old Jiang Yining had been sold by her own parents for favoring sons over daughters. Over the years, they had leaned on each other, weathered hardship side by side. Remembering this, Su Wanru’s loving gaze carried a touch of heartache.
“Auntie, it’s lovely to meet you. You’re just as gorgeous. I bet when you and Yanyan go out together, people think you’re sisters.”
“My, what a sweet mouth. Don’t be nervous, treat this place as your own home. Thank you for always being there for Yanyan,” Su Wanru said gently, patting her hand.
“It’s actually her who’s always been there for me. Don’t be fooled by me being two years older—without her, I wouldn’t have achieved anything today,” Jiang Yining replied sincerely.
She hadn’t interacted with elders in a long time, so she had been a bit tense at first. But with Su Wanru being so warm and easygoing, she quickly relaxed. The two soon chatted like old friends, almost like mother and daughter.
Carrying orange juice from the kitchen, Luo Yunyan overheard their exchange and couldn’t help but smile quietly to herself.
It was true—mutual companionship, mutual success. Without either of them, they wouldn’t be where they were today.
She joined them on the couch, occasionally chiming in as the conversation continued.
As time passed, Su Wanru finally stood. “Ningning, Auntie’s going to go start dinner. Let Yanyan take you upstairs to see your room. If you need anything, just let the staff know. The clothes in the wardrobe are all new. I asked Yanyan about your size and style and had someone bring some over. If you don’t like them, have her take you shopping. Just make yourself at home.”
After gently stroking her hair, she headed off to the kitchen with Aunt Wang.
“…Thank you, Auntie,” Jiang Yining said, her eyes suddenly wet with emotion as she turned to wipe away the tear slipping down her cheek.
Luo Yunyan pretended not to notice. “Come on, I’ll show you your room.”
“Ugh, you’re still such a heartless straight girl,” Jiang Yining sniffled but followed behind.
When they arrived at the door, Luo Yunyan tilted her chin toward it. “Go ahead, have a look.”
“What’s with all the secrecy?” Jiang Yining turned the knob—and froze the moment she stepped inside.
She’d expected a guest room at most. What she didn’t expect was a full suite—completely identical to her own bedroom.
Back in those days, they used to sleep on bare floors, and little Jiang Yining had dreamed of having a real room of her own. When she finally bought her first home, she’d designed every detail herself.
Even after she made more money and bought homes across the world, her master bedrooms always retained the same layout—an exact replica of that first sanctuary.
Now, standing in this room, the one she’d recreated time and time again, Jiang Yining couldn’t hold back her tears anymore.
“I hate you so much! You’re the worst!” she sobbed, snot and tears running freely, a far cry from the cool goddess she’d been at the airport.
Luo Yunyan gave her a disdainful glance. Honestly, her makeup was impressive. After crying this much, it was still intact.
“There’s a gift for you on the bed from my parents. Rest up a bit. I’ll come back later.”
As she turned to leave, Luo Yunyan paused just before closing the door and said softly,
“When I was ten, I promised you—every house I own will have a room for you. I don’t break my promises.”
The door shut with a quiet click.
Inside, Jiang Yining collapsed to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably.
…
No one knew how long it took before she managed to fix her makeup and revert to her usual vibrant Ning-jie self.
Jiang Ziang finished his work and drove to the Luo residence, bringing gifts. Receiving treatment almost identical to Jiang Yining’s, the man was genuinely flustered.
That night, only Luo Mom, Luo Dad, and the three of them sat down for dinner. The atmosphere was warm and pleasant.
During the meal, Luo Chenfeng said,
“Yanyan’s brothers couldn’t make it home, so I hope you two won’t mind. Just treat this place like home—they’re your brothers too.”
“Of course not, Uncle. We’re the ones imposing,” Jiang Yining and Jiang Ziang quickly said.
Luo Chenfeng frowned. “How is it imposing if you’re home? We even prepared rooms for you. Stay as long as you like—keep us lonely old folks company.”
Su Wanru chimed in warmly,
“That’s right. From now on, we’re family. You two only had each other before, but now you have us too.”
The siblings’ eyes shimmered with unshed tears.
Family… it sounded nice. This place felt nothing like their old home—it felt safe.
“I think we should just make it official—swear them in as godchildren,” Luo Chenfeng declared.
“I like that idea! I’ll check the calendar later for a good date,” Su Wanru agreed.
Under the table, Jiang Yining and Jiang Ziang frantically kicked Luo Yunyan, giving her pleading looks.
Luo Yunyan frowned, dodged their feet, and cleared her throat. “Mom, Dad… this isn’t something you can decide alone. You’ll need to ask Grandpa first.”
“Why? I want godchildren; what’s Grandpa got to do with it?” Luo Chenfeng protested.
“Because Grandpa already knows them. He once said they were Luo family’s kids but never said whose. I’m worried… your new godkids might end up being your younger siblings. Better ask first. Anyway, I’m full. You guys enjoy!”
She dropped her chopsticks and darted upstairs.
The four of them looked at each other and burst into laughter.
Luo Mom and Dad were delighted—finally, their daughter was acting like a cheeky teenager.
Meanwhile, Jiang Yining and Jiang Ziang felt a warmth in their chests. She had deflected for them, even at the cost of her own image.
Wiping her tears, Jiang Yining said,
“Uncle, Auntie… really, this is enough. We already feel so grateful. Being godchildren is just a label. As long as we’re family in our hearts, that’s all that matters.”
The Luo parents didn’t push it. “Exactly. A title doesn’t change anything—we’re already family.”
…
Jiang Yining: Thank you for sharing your family with me. But I can’t be too greedy. Just like this is already enough.
Jiang Ziang: Same here.
Luo Yunyan: S̶h̶u̶t̶ ̶u̶p̶.̶ How pretentious. Cringe! Get over yourselves!
