Chapter 38: I’m Going on a Mission
Su Anan struggled to swim ashore.
Only after falling into the pool did she realize the water wasn’t cold; it was perfect for swimming.
In the war zone, swimming was always in the river at the foot of the mountain, outdoors.
Not very friendly to women.
At this moment, Su Anan felt refreshed, as if all her fatigue had vanished.
She couldn’t help but swim a few more laps.
Her smile deepened.
Looking up, she saw a small stream flowing down from the mountain, converging into this pool.
In the pool, she could observe her surroundings more carefully.
There is an acre of land and a not-so-high mountain. Between the mountain and the land is this pool of water. The area of the pool is larger, about ten acres.
The edges where the pool met the land and mountain were clear, but the other edges were indistinct, as if shrouded in a layer of mist.
This intrigued Su Anan.
She swam towards the mist.
But she seemed unable to reach the edge.
So she gave up.
After returning to the shore, Su Anan waited until her clothes and hair were dry before leaving the space.
She carried some vegetables harvested from the space.
The time was consistent with before.
Whenever she entered the space, she came out at the same time.
This increased her safety factor.
It was really good.
Then, she pretended to water the vegetables she planted yesterday in front of the house.
Gousheng came over, wiping his nose, and took a broken bowl to help water.
He looked serious and worked hard.
Su Anan was amazed. The little guy was faster and more efficient than her. It seemed he had done a lot of work at home.
This made her look like a useless person.
However, she could carry water.
The little guy couldn’t.
“Sister-in-law, why are you carrying water yourself? Let me do it!” Xiao Ge had gone to the county town to do some errands and bought a lot of snacks. As soon as he arrived, he saw the battalion commander’s wife, who looked so weak and delicate that a gust of wind could blow her down, carrying water. He was worried about Su Anan’s safety.
He quickly took the bucket to fetch water.
Seeing Xiao Ge, Gousheng was unhappy.
“Come on, Gousheng, let’s go eat candy.” Su Anan didn’t compete with Xiao Ge; she couldn’t win anyway. She pulled Gousheng to rummage through the bag for snacks.
Gousheng was actually a little shy.
However, after Su Anan washed his face and hands and gave him a few pieces of honey-glazed three-layer cake, he calmed down a bit.
Gousheng was usually dark and dirty, and his clothes were torn. Now, clean, he was a handsome boy with thick eyebrows and big eyes.
He was just a little timid.
“Do you help with housework at home?” Su Anan also took a few pieces of honey-glazed three-layer cake. The more she chewed, the sweeter it became, making her eyes narrow in pleasure. She looked at Gousheng gently.
“I help my mom fill the firewood, pull weeds, water, and hoe the fields…” Gousheng counted on his fingers, very seriously.
Children are as pure as a blank sheet of paper, clean and innocent.
“Then you can help me pull weeds and water too.” Su Anan smiled at him.
“Okay, I’ll come to help my sister water tomorrow. What about that uncle?” Gousheng tilted his little head and looked at Xiao Ge who was watering.
He couldn’t afford to offend him.
Su Anan’s eyes curved into crescents when he called her sister: “It’s okay, that uncle will be leaving soon. He has to work like your dad, he can’t keep watering!”
Hearing this, a touch of sadness appeared in Gousheng’s big eyes, and his little shoulders slumped.
“What’s wrong?” Su Anan felt helpless. She liked children, but she really didn’t know how to coax them, only knowing to give them snacks.
Xiao Gousheng looked at Su Anan before speaking again: “My mom cried last night, saying my dad will be gone for a long time.”
This is the war zone, the northernmost border. Missions are common.
But the mission that made Xin’s wife cry must be very dangerous.
Su Anan didn’t know how to comfort him either.
Such matters are arranged and deployed by the superiors, and no one can change them.
“Hmm, does your dad often go on missions? Does he always bring back bonuses?” Su Anan thought, Xin’s wife is not young, so Xin’s platoon leader must also be quite old. He frequently goes on missions but hasn’t been promoted, meaning he chooses the bonus.
From the clothes of Gousheng and Xin’s wife, it can be seen that their family is not well-off.
What they lack most is money.
“When my dad comes back, there will be delicious food.” Gousheng didn’t understand so much, only delicious food.
Usually, he didn’t have enough to eat.
There are many children in the family, and only one person earns money.
Xin’s wife also works in the mountains, with a meager income.
Su Anan rubbed the little guy’s head: “You should be happy, when your dad comes back, there will be delicious food.”
A child’s world is simple. Hearing this, Gousheng’s eyes lit up.
When Lu Jingchen returned, Su Anan had already chopped and prepared the vegetables for lunch, and the rice was washed, just waiting to be cooked.
“Should my work be arranged now?” Lu Jingchen put on an apron, Su Anan followed, and asked.
“You’re pregnant now, won’t it be too tiring to work?” Lu Jingchen didn’t treat her like a canary, but simply didn’t want her to suffer.
Just like now, no matter how tired he was, he would come back to cook for her.
Su Anan didn’t think so: “No, you’ve done all the housework, I’ll just go to work, how could it be tiring!”
“I…” Lu Jingchen hesitated. He had already accepted a mission today.
This was a decision he had considered for a long time.
This meant he would be separated from his wife for a while.
This mission was particularly dangerous.
But as the captain of the eighth battalion, he had to lead by example, even Xin Dazhi was willing to go on the mission.
He couldn’t back down.
It was also his chance to prove himself.
To silence those gossips.
Su Anan, who was passing bowls, plates, and seasonings, looked at him strangely: “What’s wrong?”
Lu Jingchen couldn’t hide it, of course. This mission was urgent.
He also had to leave a will for his family.
He was reluctant to tell Su Anan.
Su Anan had only been here for two days, unfamiliar with the place, and he was about to leave.
He suddenly felt he was being too much.
But he was a soldier, and obeying orders was his duty.
He had to consider the people first, then his own little family.
Even though Su Anan was more important to him, he couldn’t forget his beliefs and principles.
“I’m going on a mission.” Lu Jingchen put the stir-fried vegetables on the plate and looked into Su Anan’s eyes.
This decision was beyond his control.
All he could do was ensure he could return safely.
And arrange for someone to take care of Su Anan.
Su Anan understood: “It’s okay, then wait until you come back to arrange my work.”
She originally had her own unit, and she could still bring her original work quota with her when she followed the army.
It just needed to be coordinated by the army.
Once he left, it would be put on hold.
However, she still asked: “Where is this mission?”
Actually, she shouldn’t ask, but she remembered that in the original text, Wei Zhiming, in order to continue his promotion, accepted a very dangerous mission.
That time, except for Wei Zhiming, no one came back.
They all became stepping stones for Wei Zhiming.
