Rebirth in the ’80s: The Old Lady Abandoned Her Son and Daughter Chapter 17

Chapter 17: Showing Filial Piety

“Bought me a courtyard?” Fenglan asked in surprise.

“Yes, that money was just sitting there. Buying a house, whether you rent it out or live in it yourself, is an asset.  It can even be Manman’s dowry later!”

“Mom~” Fenglan was moved to tears. Her mother considered everything for her and her child.

“Alright, stop crying and hurry up and cook!” Wu Zhiqiu impatiently pushed her eldest daughter aside and pulled Manman into the house.

Fenglan was still moved. Her mother was like that—a tough exterior but a soft heart!  She cared for Fenglan but wouldn’t let her express her gratitude.

The three of them happily ate dinner, Wu Zhiqiu describing the small courtyard.

“Mom, maybe we can move there later, it’s close to Grandma!”

“Okay!” Fenglan agreed; she wanted to be closer to her parents.

“You can decide when the time comes!” Wu Zhiqiu was happy, this was the first big thing she had accomplished since returning home.

While their family was harmonious, the Li family’s atmosphere was far from it!

When the second son returned home for lunch, he saw his older brother bringing his grandparents into the lane from afar.

The second son ran home, shouting, “Chunni, let’s go, Big Brother brought Grandma and Grandpa!”

Chunni was putting the third child down for a nap.

Seeing her husband’s frantic arrival, she was confused. “So what if they came?”

The second son glared at his wife, exasperated, quickly putting shoes on the older two children.

“My grandparents are very difficult.  In their eyes, only Big Brother exists! Let’s go quickly, don’t waste your energy on them and get nothing in return!”

“But what about Mom?” Chunni was still worried about her mother-in-law, who was now quite fond of her. She wasn’t comfortable leaving her mother-in-law alone at home.

“I’ll tell Aunt Liu later, ask her to keep an eye on Mom and have her go stay with Big Sister for a few days!” The second son quickly came up with a plan.

Chunni thought it was a good idea. If her mother-in-law knew in advance, she wouldn’t come back to get upset.

The second son led his wife and children out the back door to his father-in-law’s house.

The eldest son brought his grandparents inside and found the house empty.

He had hoped his sister-in-law would cook for his parents, but no one was home.

He went outside and saw Hu Dala cooking lunch in the kitchen. He asked, “Auntie, have you seen my sister-in-law?”

Hu Dala had been busy cooking and hadn’t noticed anything unusual at their house.

“Not at home? I saw her playing with the kids a while ago!”

The eldest son shook his head. “She’s not here!”

“Then I don’t know. Why are you looking for your sister-in-law?” Dala started to pry.

“Nothing, my grandparents are here, and I thought my sister-in-law could cook something.”

“Can’t you cook yourself? You, the eldest son, are ordering your sister-in-law around? Your grandparents came all this way; aren’t you taking them out to a restaurant?” Dala went on and on.

The eldest son regretted his decision to talk to Dala!

Before Dala finished speaking,

The eldest son rushed out.

Dala spat, “Coming empty-handed, and still ordering his sister-in-law around; what a shameless person!”

The eldest son went out and bought a few buns for his parents to eat. He had no money left; Wu Zhiqiu had taken his bankbook, and she had also taken the twenty yuan in his pocket. He had to borrow money from a colleague to go back home!

Wang Yue was furious when he heard that his mother-in-law had taken his bankbook, and he had been giving her the cold shoulder for the past few days.

Now, even buying a few buns for his parents felt like a burden!

The old couple happily ate the meat buns.  The buns in the city were so fragrant!

The eldest son accompanied his grandparents, waiting for Li Mancang and Wu Zhiqiu to finish work.

The second and his wife didn’t go back all afternoon, and the eldest speculated that she might have gone back to her mother’s house!

When it was time to get off work, the third son arrived home first and saw his grandparents had come.

With his cunning mind, the third son quickly realized that his older brother couldn’t outmaneuver their parents, so he had brought them back from the village as support.

The third son called out to his grandparents, and they responded in a bland manner.

Just then, Li Fengchun returned from school and, before she could greet her grandparents, the old lady called her to cook.

“Grandma, I still need to study! Let Mother cook when she gets back!”

The old lady raised an eyebrow. “You’re eighteen or nineteen years old, and you still wait for your mother to cook dinner? What kind of nonsense is that? Studying doesn’t take long; hurry up and make dinner! You don’t even act like a proper young lady; I don’t know how your eldest brother is raising you!”

Li Fengchun… she had been doing housework these past few days! Cooking was not her responsibility!

“Why are you standing there? Hurry up! Why is it so difficult to do some work?” The old lady was impatient; she had never seen such a lazy girl.

The eldest son’s wife was useless; the girl was so spoiled!

Li Fengchun didn’t dare argue with her grandmother and reluctantly went to cook.

When Li Mancang got home, he saw his parents had come.

“Dad, Mom? What brings you here?” Li Mancang quickly stopped his bicycle. He had just been home a few days ago to deliver money; there was nothing going on at home, so why the sudden visit?

Seeing their grandson, the old couple frowned, but seeing their eldest son’s face grinning like a flower made them happier.

“Your eldest son Xingguo insisted on bringing us here to stay for a few days! He wants to show us some filial piety!” The old lady looked at her eldest son with delight. This son was the most successful; he had settled down in the city and even had such an accomplished eldest grandson.

Li Mancang glanced at his older son, realizing the intention behind his actions.

“Dad, Mom, since our eldest wants to show you some filial piety, why don’t you go stay with him? It’ll let him show off a bit! His place is much better than our old courtyard!”

“Yes, Grandpa, Grandma, my big brother’s place is great! They have a TV and radio! The bathroom is inside the house, much better than ours!” The third son quickly chimed in.

The eldest son… his place wasn’t as nice as they claimed!

Hearing about the TV and radio, the old couple’s eyes lit up. They didn’t have a TV in their village and had never seen one!

Both looked at their eldest son, Li Xingguo.

“Grandpa, Grandma…”

“Dad, Mom, I’ll take you over! You’ll see how successful your eldest grandson is now!” Li Mancang interrupted his older son, helping his parents toward the door.

“Third son, ride your bike to take your grandparents over!”

“Okay, Dad!” The third son hopped on his bike, taking the old man with him, while Li Mancang took the old lady on his bike, speeding off to the eldest son’s family quarters.

You want to show filial piety? Let me help you with that!

Li Xingguo was jumping up and down behind them. He hadn’t planned on bringing his grandparents home; his house was tiny, and how would they fit?

He ran after them, but Li Mancang didn’t care; if he wanted to cause trouble, he wasn’t ready for it!

Li Mancang and the third son helped their parents into the eldest son’s room.

Wang Yue looked at the old couple in shock. What was going on? Why were they here?

“Sister-in-law, don’t just stand there; Grandpa and Grandma haven’t had dinner yet!” The third son said gleefully, enjoying the situation. It seemed their father had a plan; the eldest brother was likely digging his own grave!

“Make sure to prepare plenty of food for your grandparents! Li Xingguo specifically brought them here to show filial piety!” Li Mancang added, digging the knife in deeper.

Wang Yue felt dizzy. They wanted to show filial piety? On what basis? They were the grandchildren; how could they claim to show filial piety?

But Wang Yue knew the purpose behind Li Xingguo bringing their parents here. Until that goal was achieved, she didn’t dare show any displeasure toward them!

Even without showing her displeasure, Wang Yue’s expression was anything but pleasant!
