Chapter 15
When the orderly heard the name Mu Qingyuan, his eyes widened in shock.
“May I ask if Mu Qingyuan is here?”
Lu Zhiyao asked again, and although the orderly was surprised, he still nodded. “Please wait a moment. I’ll go report to my superior.”
After speaking, the orderly instructed another comrade and exchanged a few words with him before walking quickly ahead.
The remaining orderly invited Lu Zhiyao and her companions to rest nearby.
“This is a large base. It will take some time to report to the superior. You can rest here for a while.”
Lu Zhiyao nodded and sat down with her two children.
“This is where Daddy works?”
“This place looks so big! Daddy must be super cool, right?”
“Why doesn’t Daddy have time to come back to see us?”
“Is it because he’s really busy?”
The two children chattered back and forth with questions, and Lu Zhiyao smiled warmly. “Soldiers protect our country. Your father is one of them. Of course he has responsibilities and can’t just come back whenever he wants.”
“So that means Daddy really is busy!”
“Little Hu from the village’s dad is like that too. He’s busy for a long time.”
“Exactly!”
“Every time he comes home, he only stays for a day or two before leaving again.”
…
The two little ones expressed their thoughts, and Lu Zhiyao couldn’t help but smile at their cute and innocent expressions.
After they had waited for about half an hour, the orderly returned with someone else.
Lu Zhiyao quickly took the children and stood up to greet them.
“Are you Mu Qingyuan’s wife?”
The person asked immediately. Lu Zhiyao nodded. “Yes, I’ve brought the children to find their father.”
“Comrade Mu Qingyuan went on a mission three years ago. It was a very special assignment, and he hasn’t returned since.”
The man sounded a bit awkward as he spoke.
Lu Zhiyao’s pupils shook with shock upon hearing that. A mission… for three years?
That meant that in the original owner’s memories, Mu Qingyuan hadn’t come home in the past three years not because he didn’t want to—but because he was on duty?
But Bai Shui Shui had never mentioned this.
She hadn’t even hinted that he was on a mission.
So Mu Qingyuan wasn’t even at the base. No wonder Bai Shui Shui had been so bold.
Lu Zhiyao quickly figured it out!
And once she did, her eyes flickered as she immediately began to act. “How could my husband possibly be on a mission? That’s impossible!”
“To tell you the truth, I have a friend who is a military doctor in the same unit as my husband. She never once mentioned that he went on a mission!”
“And if my husband was on a mission, how could he still send us money every month? Even if it’s just 10 or 8 yuan, he still sends it!”
“And my friend told me that he used his salary to buy her all sorts of nice things—clothes and whatnot. I thought, he’s buying things for someone else and not caring about his wife and children, so I brought the kids all the way here!”
“You’re not lying to me, are you?”
Lu Zhiyao cried loudly as she spoke, looking utterly pitiful.
The man who came with the orderly was stunned by what he heard, finding it hard to believe.
“How could that be?”
“The military wouldn’t lie to you. Who is this military doctor you’re talking about?”
“That’s how it is. My military doctor friend told me that. I came to see if she’s really having an affair with my husband!”
Lu Zhiyao cried as she spoke, and the two children watched from the side.
Should they cry too?
They exchanged a glance and pinched their hands lightly. Then, with a loud “waaah,” they burst into tears.
“Little ones, what’s wrong?”
The orderly quickly stepped forward.
Dabao and Xiaobao cried loudly. When they heard the question, they sniffled and said, “That military doctor auntie said we don’t have a daddy. She said Daddy would rather buy her things than buy anything for us. She said Daddy doesn’t love us and doesn’t want us anymore!”
“Waaah!”
“Daddy!”
The three of them stood crying their hearts out at the base entrance.
The two orderlies felt awkward. Seeing how sadly the children were crying, one of them began to believe Lu Zhiyao wasn’t lying. “Who is this military doctor you’re talking about? We’ll call her over to ask.”
“Comrade Mu Qingyuan really is on a mission. If the military doctor is out there damaging another comrade’s reputation, we’ll have to deal with her accordingly.”
Upon hearing this, Lu Zhiyao finally stopped crying.
“It’s Bai Shui Shui. She’s a junior military doctor in the base.”
Once she said the name, the orderly nodded and immediately went to find her.
Meanwhile, Bai Shui Shui had just put her things down not long ago. She didn’t know which gate Lu Zhiyao would come through, so she stayed near the base entrance.
After a while, she decided she couldn’t just sit around. She needed to check each gate.
But before she could leave, an orderly came running over.
“You’re Military Doctor Bai, right?”
“Someone at the gate says they know you. Please come with us.” Although the orderly didn’t yet know the full truth, he felt certain the children wouldn’t lie.
If this military doctor had really made up lies about Comrade Mu Qingyuan buying her things, and even told the children that their father didn’t want them…
Then this woman was truly malicious!
How could a woman say such things to children?
That’s just heartbreaking.
When she heard someone at the gate said they knew her, Bai Shui Shui’s eyelid twitched. Was it Lu Zhiyao?
She quickly followed the orderly to the gate.
When they arrived, Bai Shui Shui did indeed see Lu Zhiyao standing outside with the two children.
“Military Doctor Bai,” said the man who had come earlier with the orderly. He was the regiment commander and Mu Qingyuan’s superior officer.
“Hello, Commander Liu!”
Bai Shui Shui greeted him with a smile. Liu Haijun nodded. “This woman here says she’s Mu Qingyuan’s wife and that she brought two children to find him.”
“She also claims that after you returned from leave, you spread all sorts of rumors in the village, saying Comrade Mu Qingyuan spent lots of money on you.”
“You even told the children their father didn’t want them. Is that true?”
As soon as Commander Liu finished speaking, Bai Shui Shui pretended to stay calm and glanced indifferently at Lu Zhiyao and the kids. “Commander Liu, I don’t even know them!”
Huh?
Commander Liu hadn’t expected that kind of answer.
“Mu Qingyuan’s wife is from our village, but it’s definitely not this woman. She’s an imposter!”
Bai Shui Shui said this with a bit of panic in her heart.
But then she thought—Mu Qingyuan’s return date from his mission was uncertain. No one else in the unit knew Lu Zhiyao. As long as she denied it, Commander Liu and the others would never let Lu Zhiyao stay.
They might even accuse her of causing trouble and send her to the police station for a few days!
