“Are our Dabao and Xiaobao being good today?!”
When Zhang Hong came home, it was nearly 2 p.m., much later than his usual off-duty time.
Exhausted, he didn’t go to eat lunch right away.
Instead, his first action was to quietly check on the two children who were already asleep in their room.
“Dabao and Xiaobao must be good, not crying or fussing—so sensible, well-behaved, and obedient. Lao Zhang, why are you home so late?! Have you eaten? Was there a major surgery in the department?!”
Fang Xinyu looked at her husband with concern, thinking he had been busy with hospital affairs all morning.
…
For a long moment, Zhang Hong didn’t say a word in response to his wife’s questions.
He stared at the sleeping Dabao and Xiaobao for a while before quietly turning to leave the room.
Sensing something was wrong, Fang Xinyu immediately noticed her husband’s unusual expression—he looked heavy-hearted.
“Did something happen?!”
She followed him to the living room, carrying a bowl of warm food while gently asking.
“Ah… Huaiyuan and Xiaoru have been reported. Just as I was about to leave work, some people from Jing University secretly came to warn me. By the time I got there, Huaiyuan and Xiaoze were taken to the investigation committee, while Xiaoru and Xiaowan were taken home for a search.”
Zhang Hong had been hiding far away and dared not approach because those people hadn’t left yet.
He didn’t show up immediately because he knew that recently Qiao Jiuru and Su Huaiyuan had made many arrangements.
As long as no harm came to the Su family and they could hold on until the relocation, the suffering now would be nothing.
Still, it didn’t make it easier for him.
He waited quietly until those people left and was relieved to see that Qiao Jiuru and Zhou Wanwan had not been beaten, then he left.
After all, he still had to go to work in the afternoon and couldn’t get too close to the Su family.
Not to mention, Dabao and Xiaobao were still at home. His job was to protect these two children.
What?!
Fang Xinyu was shocked and found it hard to believe what her husband said after hearing about trouble at the Su family.
“That can’t be right. The Qiao family made great contributions back then. How could they treat them like this?!”
Not to mention the Qiao family, the Su family’s contributions were no less—they had donated more than half their wealth and helped gather a lot of supplies both domestically and abroad.
Fang Xinyu couldn’t believe that two families with such great merits would be treated so badly now.
This is…
“Do you think only the Qiao family is being treated like this? What about others who contributed?!”
Zhang Hong said helplessly, lowering his head to eat quickly.
After finishing, he had to go back to work.
Fang Xinyu was speechless.
She felt a chill in her heart and took a long moment to regain her composure, worry-filled, glancing toward the two children in the room.
Thankfully, Dabao and Xiaobao were brought here yesterday; otherwise, who knows how frightened they’d be?!
Probably hadn’t even had a proper meal.
“For now, you take care of the two children. We’re working through connections to arrange things. Once the relocation location is confirmed, we’ll send the kids to Huaiyuan and Jiuru.”
Zhang Hong finished eating in just a few minutes, and before leaving for work, he reminded his wife once again.
“I’ll take good care of Dabao and Xiaobao.”
“No, no, you mean Dabao and Xiaobao have to go with Jiuru and the others to be relocated?! Lao Zhang, I don’t agree!”
Fang Xinyu hadn’t heard clearly at first, but once she understood, she exploded.
These are two kids under two years old!
How could they follow adults to such harsh places?!
No food, no drink, if they got sick, it could be deadly.
What are Jiuru and the others thinking?!
The kids are being sent out?
Shouldn’t they be trying to find someone to adopt them quickly?!
“Old Fang, don’t worry. Jiuru and Huaiyuan know what they’re doing. We know what we’re doing. Without absolute certainty or a good place, even if Jiuru and Huaiyuan disagree, we won’t let Dabao and Xiaobao go with them.”
Zhang Hong hinted subtly to his wife—not because he wanted to hide things, but because before things are settled, he feared changes or accidents.
“I can’t bear to see these two children suffer. Just thinking about them having a hard time, not eating or dressing well, it hurts my heart.”
Fang Xinyu always loved children, especially Dabao and Xiaobao.
Her own grandchildren weren’t around, so she doted on these kids all the more.
After spending a day with Dabao and Xiaobao, she loved them so much that if the Su family couldn’t raise them, she was considering raising them herself.
“Jiuru and Huaiyuan are even more unwilling to let Dabao and Xiaobao suffer or get hurt. I have to go to work now.”
Zhang Hong sighed deeply. How could he feel good inside? But he was helpless.
..
At the investigation committee, Tan Shuwei silently glanced at the two rooms opposite the courtyard.
One held Su Huaiyuan; the other, Su Ze.
At this moment, shortly after the father and son were brought there, their Director Lin entered.
Tan Shuwei didn’t even have to eavesdrop to know what Lin would say—threats against their family and underhanded tricks.
“Su Huaiyuan, have you confessed everything?! Don’t lie to us. Those who lie never have a good outcome.”
Director Lin stared coldly at the man sitting in the chair, not fully trusting the information he had given.
Su Huaiyuan lowered his head expressionlessly, avoiding eye contact, but his clenched fists showed his inner anxiety and unease.
Lin didn’t care. Sooner or later, Su would reveal all the good stuff.
He was in no hurry.
Now, he needed to check the houses Su Huaiyuan had mentioned.
Who knew what treasures were hidden inside?!
Tan Shuwei watched Director Lin leave Su Huaiyuan’s room, then quickly rose from his desk to greet him.
“Director, are you heading out?”
Lin Keshen was about to leave when Tan Shuwei called out to him.
Knowing today’s events couldn’t be hidden from him, Lin nodded in agreement.
“We’re going to confiscate the Su family’s exploitative properties. Old Tan, want to come?”
“Director, I won’t go. Such hard work? I’d rather stay in the office where it’s comfortable. Besides, I know you won’t forget me.”
Tan Shuwei shook his head smiling, showing no intention to grab credit or benefits.
Lin Keshen, seeing Tan’s flattering attitude, couldn’t help but smile smugly, very pleased.
If he and this man didn’t get along well and always opposed each other, he would have removed him long ago.
Keeping a compliant person around is better than replacing him with someone who might compete for power.
“Old Tan, I like someone like you who knows what’s what.”
