Chapter 04: “How come my wife is you?”
That noon, Jiang Yao took a short nap in the office, opened his eyes punctually, stretched his muscles, sipped a few mouthfuls of mocha brought by his secretary, then took out a small sprayer and watered the evergreen tree next to his desk.
The sunlight outside the window was just right, indicating that his continuous gloomy mood had cleared up mostly in this leisurely afternoon.
His phone on the desk vibrated twice.
His old friend Chen Yiqi sent him a message, inviting him to go out and have fun on Saturday.
Jiang Yao: [I’m busy on Saturday, I have to meet someone.]
Chen Yiqi: [Who is it? Another client? You’ve been working overtime for over ten days, aren’t you afraid of sudden death?]
Jiang Yao: [Meeting my wife.]
The next second, Chen Yiqi sent dozens of question marks.
Jiang Yao got up and put the sprayer back in the cabinet, waited for Chen Yiqi to finish raving, and then slowly typed: [To be precise, it’s my future wife, I might get married.]
After sending the message, the name at the top of the chat box immediately changed to “Typing…”, staying like that for over a minute.
The message that popped up was only two words: [Congratulations.]
During this minute, Chen Yiqi did type a lot.
Such as “Who is the person?”, “Why so sudden?”, “Blink your eyes if you are forced”, “Do you need your brothers to help you elope.”
But he deleted all of them in the end.
He and Jiang Yao grew up together, almost like brothers, except for Shen Tang. He had never seen Jiang Yao like anyone else, but Shen Tang was already a married man.
Coming from such a family, not many people’s marriages are completely under their own control.
The two of them were entangled by interests, either politely cooperating and going through the motions, or becoming resentful partners.
For Jiang Yao to be so open-minded, in a way, it was a good thing. Why should he suggest bad ideas that could affect his brother’s mindset?
Moreover, how many examples of elopement have there been in the past, running away from home, having their financial sources cut off by their families, and after eating a few meals of chaff and vegetables, they still obediently roll back to get married. The destined wealth and status in life are not something easily given up.
Chen Yiqi: [If it works out, remember to help me say hello to the future sister-in-law.]
Jiang Yao leaned against the desk, and replied lazily with an [OK~].
Chen Yiqi was someone who couldn’t keep his mouth shut, and within a few minutes, several friends who usually kept in touch were already asking about the situation.
To prevent other people from lining up to ask, Jiang Yao simply sent a “marriage introduction notice” to everyone.
Saying that he might be getting married soon, then he received a basketful of “congratulations” filled with shock.
It was probably some kind of avoidance psychology that haunted him. In the following days, Jiang Yao never asked who the man he was supposed to marry was.
His parents also seemed to be taking care of his emotions, and never actively brought up information about the other party.
In the blink of an eye, it was the day to meet the marriage partner.
Jiang Yao sat in the car, holding his phone, playing cards with Chen Yiqi and another friend, and got three pairs of kings in a row.
Chen Yiqi posted on the public chat: [Your luck is truly amazing. Even stepping on dog poop outside could turn into a pleasant experience. It looks like our Brother Yao is going to marry a good wife.]
Friend: [It’s best to be someone who can handle both the social settings and the kitchen, gentle and obedient, and doesn’t cause trouble. But please don’t be like the two from the Lu family, both of whom were never at home, and divorced in just a few months, causing a huge commotion.]
The friend was talking about the great-grandson of the real estate tycoon and the young master of the private bank.
It was rumored that the two had never even met each other. On the wedding day, the young man from the Gu family even mistook the bride. To this day, their failed marriage has become a joke in the circle.
Jiang Yao never worried about such a situation.
After all, two people who live together for the sake of benefits, like lovers who end up caring for each other, or enemies who envy each other, have a very slim chance of success. In a sense, Lu and Gu could also be considered “chosen ones.”
Jiang Yao: [I’ll take your good wishes.]
He was in a good mood as soon as he won a card, and curled the corners of his lips and laughing loudly, not at all like a doomed person forced into an arranged marriage.
The car entered the last stretch of the road.
Yuan Li nagged in Jiang Yao’s ear: “Yao Yao, the other person is a well-behaved young man. Be polite when we get to the hotel, don’t scare him off.”
Jiang Yao freed one hand from playing cards, waving it a bit impatiently: “I know, mom. I’m already doing you a favor by dressing like this.”
Under his mom’s urging, he deliberately avoided his usual flashy trendy outfits, opting for a thin mustard-colored sweatshirt paired with casual pants. He didn’t style his hair with gel, letting his bangs fall messily over his eyebrows.
Aside from the red highlights at the ends of his hair, he looked like a student who had not yet entered society.
His mom always referred to his marriage partner as a “young man,” indicating that the other party should be quite young and easy to handle. Following the situation, it shouldn’t be a bad idea.
The dinner was held at an elegant Chinese restaurant.
The car slowly drove into the area where the VIP guests were welcomed, and the doorman enthusiastically came forward to help park the car.
After getting out of the car, Jiang Yao followed behind Jiang Qingtian and Yuan Li by about two meters, walking towards the private room on the first floor accompanied by the pleasant sound of a pipa (a Chinese musical instrument).
Passing through the small path to the entrance, he just got a ten-game winning streak and finished the last game.
“Nice!”
Jiang Yao raised his head proudly, and gazed far above his parents’ heads.
Immediately, his dazzling smile was sealed on his lips like cement.
In the room filled with tea smoke, a man as conspicuous as jade was sitting.
Jiang Yao almost dropped his phone, as if he had been kicked hard in the butt, and stumbled out in a few steps.
Seeing the well-dressed and elegant Duan Zhuxian in front of him, Jiang Yao blurted out a perfectly vulgar curse in front of the room full of people—
“F*ck, how come my wife is you?”
