What’s Wrong with Being a Vicious Female Supporting Character in the [1970’s] Chapter 21

Chapter 21: Finalize the location for going to the countryside and handle the work

Director Liu reviewed the materials.  To help Comrade Yang, he needed to find the best location.  “Yes, the entire Red Star Commune is near both mountains and the sea,” the educated youth office director said, pointing to the commune on the map.  “Shandong Province, Red Star Commune.” Director Liu remembered a close university classmate who worked there. He liked Yang Mumu and could ask his classmate to look after her.

“That’s it. Call the Red Star Commune’s educated youth office. Let them decide the specific team. Just make sure the team leader is kind.” He added, “I’ll also call the commune’s Revolutionary Committee. They know the situation best and can find a suitable team for Comrade Yang Mumu.” He stood up after taking a sip of tea. “I have other things to do. I’ll go now.”

“Alright,” Director Zhang said, standing up to see him off.

Meanwhile, Yang Mumu returned the gongs and drums to the aunties and went to the educated youth office. She met Director Liu at the entrance. She smiled and greeted him. “Director Liu.”

He nodded. “Comrade Yang, here to inquire about your assignment?”

“Yes, I heard I was registered, so I came to find out. I’ll prepare for the countryside. I’ll follow your example, serving the country and contributing to rural development.” Mumu’s enthusiasm and lack of resentment pleased the educated youth office director. She wasn’t here to cause trouble; she was a good comrade who deserved to be treated well.

Director Liu chuckled. “Comrade Yang has great spirit!  This is Director Zhang from the educated youth office.  I’ve already inquired about your situation; he knows everything. I’ll leave you two.”

“Thank you, Director Liu. I’ll work hard. Goodbye, Director!” Mumu saluted as he left, delighted. The banners and letters had worked; Director Liu personally inquired about her assignment.

Director Zhang took Mumu into the office and showed her the information about the Red Star Commune. “Comrade Yang, Director Liu specifically asked about you. He emphasized that we shouldn’t let you down.  Your assignment was our mistake; we’ll compensate.  The Red Star Commune is good.  If you like it, we’ll finalize it here.”

Mumu reviewed the materials.  The abundance of resources—hunting, gathering, fishing—was her dream life!  She thanked Director Zhang, expressing her enthusiasm for the Red Star Commune.

“Good, Comrade Yang. Let’s finalize it here,” said Director Zhang, pleased.  He decided to provide extra supplies.  “Since the location is decided, let’s get your supplies.”

Mumu received a kettle, two washbasins, toiletries, towels, shoes, bedding, clothes, and 100 yuan.  Director Zhang helped her pack and load everything onto her bicycle.

“The assignment notice will be ready in three days, giving you another three days to prepare.  The office will buy tickets and send you to the station.”  Director Zhang felt for Mumu, a young woman facing hardship and having to leave for a distant location.

“I’ll handle everything here.  Things are easier to obtain in the city. Write if you need anything from home,” he advised.

“Thank you, Uncle. I’ll prepare everything.” Mumu left, planning her six days.  Her priority was her job at the machinery factory.  She had two options: a year’s leave of absence or selling her position.  The latter would bring a substantial sum, allowing her to find another job later.  She also had her “golden finger” and could work physically if necessary.  She decided to sell her job.

Mumu considered who to sell it to, planning to spread the word.  Aunt Wang was a good contact.

Meanwhile, Director Zhang, remembering Mumu’s job, considered buying it for his daughter, whose job at the textile factory was demanding.  He decided to discuss it with his wife and approach Mumu quickly, as the job was in high demand.
