Chapter 34: Song Qiao Finds Out She’s Pregnant!
Despite the many doubts in Song Qiao’s heart, she didn’t want to worry Bai Shuyu. She pouted slightly and smiled as she replied, “Don’t overthink it. He did all that out of love and respect for me.”
Bai Shuyu’s expression darkened slightly, and she looked like she had something to say but held back.
Still, seeing how certain Song Qiao was — and with the two of them about to get married — there wasn’t much point in bringing anything else up now. In the end, she could only hope that she was just being overly suspicious.
After returning to her room, Song Qiao thought carefully about her years of dating Chen Yang. They rarely argued, and compared to other couples, they seemed loving.
Yet, this kind of love felt like there was always some invisible barrier between them. They weren’t as close or intimate as other couples. But what exactly that barrier was, she couldn’t quite put into words.
Her mind wandered briefly before drifting to Xie Yanli’s cold expression earlier that day at the Marriott Hotel, along with what he had said to her. He clearly saw her as some kind of heartless woman, yet in this relationship, she was clearly the one who had been hurt.
But Xie Yanli’s pain and anger had seemed so real. Song Qiao couldn’t understand why. She tossed and turned in bed, unable to fall asleep.
Eventually, she drifted off just as dawn approached, still unable to figure it all out.
The next morning, she was woken by Bai Shuyu knocking on her door. Groggy, she got up, washed, and went to eat breakfast. But when she saw the fried dough sticks (youtiao) on the table, she immediately covered her mouth and ran to the bathroom to throw up.
Bai Shuyu hadn’t slept at all the previous night. After thinking it over thoroughly, she was convinced that Song Qiao had lied to her. No matter how respectful Chen Yang might be, he was still a man. And given Song Qiao’s reaction last night, she clearly seemed pregnant. That’s why Bai Shuyu had deliberately prepared the greasy breakfast this morning to test her.
Sure enough, as soon as Song Qiao smelled the greasy food, she ran to the bathroom to vomit again. When she came out, Bai Shuyu sternly insisted that she go to the hospital for a check-up.
Song Qiao was in a rush to get to the studio, so she reluctantly agreed. But to her surprise, the moment she got into the car, Bai Shuyu followed right behind her and sat in the passenger seat.
Knowing her mother’s personality, Song Qiao realized there was no escaping this, so she called her assistant to explain and obediently drove to Incheon Hospital.
At the hospital, Song Qiao registered for the gastroenterology department. When it was her turn, Bai Shuyu insisted on following her into the consultation room. After hearing her symptoms, the gastroenterologist recommended a B-scan ultrasound to check for pregnancy.
Just as Song Qiao was about to refuse, Bai Shuyu quickly nodded to the doctor and said, “Alright, thank you, doctor.”
She then pulled Song Qiao out of the room and straight to the obstetrics and gynecology department. Without letting her protest, she swiftly booked an appointment with Liu Min — a highly reputed OB-GYN and the department director — on her phone.
Song Qiao was speechless. “Mom, how can you not believe me? I’m really not pregnant. Why are you taking me to OB-GYN? I need to get back to the studio — please just let me go.”
“Qiaoqiao, I already got the appointment for you. And the doctor at gastroenterology also suggested a B-scan. Just do it for my peace of mind, okay? As soon as you finish the scan, I’ll let you leave. But if you refuse, I’ll stick with you all day.”
With arms crossed and an unyielding attitude, Bai Shuyu stood firm.
Song Qiao knew her mother didn’t believe a word she said last night. She also realized that if she didn’t do the scan, Bai Shuyu would never let her go — and would keep obsessing and making assumptions.
Thinking it over, Song Qiao figured that since she was already at the hospital, she could at least ask Dr. Liu about her unusual period this time. It was rare that Liu Min was even available today. After much deliberation, she finally agreed.
Once it was her turn, Song Qiao briefly explained her symptoms to Liu Min. After listening, Liu Min explained, “It’s still possible to have a period when you’re pregnant. In early pregnancy, especially with signs of threatened miscarriage, bleeding can still occur.”
From Liu Min’s repeated explanations, it was clear she suspected pregnancy. Song Qiao looked doubtful.
Liu Min then suggested the B-scan to either confirm or rule it out.
“Alright, Dr. Liu, please go ahead and write the order,” Bai Shuyu agreed from the side.
To put her mother’s suspicions to rest, Song Qiao didn’t object this time.
It wasn’t crowded at the hospital, and since they were at a private facility, the process went quickly. Soon it was Song Qiao’s turn for the ultrasound.
After the exam, Bai Shuyu sat waiting in the hallway, excitedly chatting about things Song Qiao should do if she were pregnant. Song Qiao didn’t believe for a second that she was and completely ignored her mother’s chatter.
Half an hour later, a nurse called Song Qiao to retrieve her results. Bai Shuyu immediately stopped talking.
As they both stood up and walked toward the doctor’s office, Song Qiao gave her mother a heads-up. “Mom, whether you believe me or not, you’ve really overthought this. When the doctor gives you the results, please don’t be disappointed.”
Bai Shuyu just smiled and replied, “Qiaoqiao, if you really are pregnant, I’ll help raise the baby, okay? I promise they’ll be healthy and chubby.”
Then she added, “Xu Qin is the child’s paternal grandmother. If she’s also willing to help, I’m happy to co-parent with her. That way neither of us gets too tired, and you won’t have to interrupt your work.”
Hearing how far ahead her mother was thinking, Song Qiao decided to let the facts speak for themselves and said no more. She quickly entered the office, with Bai Shuyu following close behind.
As soon as Song Qiao sat down in front of Liu Min, before she could say anything, Bai Shuyu anxiously asked, “Dr. Liu, is my daughter pregnant?”
Knowing she wasn’t pregnant, Song Qiao remained calm, about to ask Liu Min to confirm this for her. But to her shock, Liu Min smiled and nodded. “Yes, congratulations — your daughter is indeed pregnant.”
Bai Shuyu nearly jumped up with joy. She gently patted Song Qiao’s shoulder and beamed, “Qiaoqiao, this is wonderful news!”
But Song Qiao was completely stunned. Pregnant? How was that possible? She and Chen Yang had never even been intimate — how could she possibly be pregnant out of nowhere?
She stared at Liu Min and asked in disbelief, “Doctor, are you sure you didn’t make a mistake? How could I be pregnant?”
Liu Min looked displeased at her question. As a highly respected OB-GYN, she wasn’t used to having her judgment questioned.
She replied sternly, “I don’t make mistakes. But if you don’t believe me, you’re welcome to get checked again at another hospital. That said, I need to warn you — the bleeding you experienced was a sign of a threatened miscarriage. If you intend to keep the baby, you’ll need to take medication to support the pregnancy and stay on bed rest for a while.”
Song Qiao was in total shock. Her thoughts scattered, she mumbled to herself in confusion, “What on earth is going on? How could I possibly be pregnant?”
