He couldn’t smell anything.
“Yes… I forgot to take my own out of my luggage,” Pei Qi explained, “I just used yours, I won’t do it next time.”
Guan Yue: “Why?”
“Huh?” Pei Qi didn’t understand.
Why what?
Guan Yue: “Mine isn’t good?”
“No,” Pei Qi finally understood a little.
“Then use it.”
Dropping those three words forcefully, the man walked out of the room.
Leaving the bewildered capybara standing there in a daze.
It seemed like there was a generation gap between his and Doctor Guan’s brainwaves.
The capybara shook his head. He felt he was more suited to working with his hands than thinking.
He hurriedly started cleaning the room.
The room was actually very clean, with very little dust.
The bedsheets were also neatly made.
Mm… ready for immediate occupancy.
Pei Qi collapsed onto the bed, eyes open.
In his line of sight was an unfamiliar ceiling light, an unfamiliar ceiling.
His brain slowly confirmed.
This was his new habitat.
Many habitats flashed through the capybara’s mind.
The long ones might last for years, the short ones only a few months.
When he was a child, he lived in his hometown for several years. Later, he moved several times with his third aunt, spent several summer and winter vacations at his parents’ house, then high school boarding, then university, then work… his habitats were always changing, only settling down recently.
He wondered how long this habitat would last.
The more he thought, the heavier his brain felt, and he fell asleep quite smoothly.
When he woke up in the morning, Guan Yue had already left, leaving a pot of millet porridge.
Yujiang Mansion was very close to Pei Qi’s workplace, only two subway stops away, with the subway station right at the entrance of the community.
His commute time was greatly reduced, and he could even sit down and leisurely eat breakfast.
There was a message from the appendectomy doctor on his phone.
G: [There’s porridge in the kitchen.]
G: [Eat it.]
Pei Qi inexplicably felt that these two words were very intimidating, “Eat it.”
You wouldn’t know what he was supposed to eat otherwise.
He scooped out a bowl of still-hot millet porridge from the pot. There were a few small dishes on the dining table.
After finishing a bowl, he took a “photo” of the empty bowl and sent it to the appendectomy doctor.
The white coat’s phone vibrated twice. At that time, the appendectomy doctor was handing over shifts.
“Bed 55’s oxygen saturation was 75 this morning. After giving him oxygen with a mask, the oxygen saturation stabilized at 95. I’ve already asked respiratory medicine to consult…” The nurse held up a folder and reported on the ward situation.
“This patient had better be transferred to respiratory medicine,” after the handover, the director said, hands behind his back, his gaze falling on Guan Yue beside him, “Xiao Yue, are you on duty today?”
Guan Yue had just put his hand in his pocket when he paused: “Yes.”
A group of people followed the director out: “After checking the wards, there’s a gallbladder reconstruction surgery. You and I will do it, bring Dong Yi along.”
“Okay.”
He agreed, estimating the end time. If it went smoothly, it would probably be noon.
Noon, twelve o’clock.
The man came out of the operating room, tilted his head, and rotated his sore neck several times.
The junior brother followed behind: “So hungry! There’s definitely no food left in the cafeteria by now. Senior brother, let’s order takeout.”
Guan Yue finally had time to check his phone messages.
Among the many red dots, the man subconsciously locked onto the capybara’s avatar and clicked on it.
Seven: [Photo jpg.]
Seven: [Finished eating.]
The man lowered his head and pursed his lips.
This was probably the first time the capybara had sent him a photo.
Lü Dongyi, who was behind him, put his arm around his shoulder and leaned in: “Hey, who are you messaging?”
In an instant, Guan Yue turned off his phone screen.
“So mysterious?” Lü Dongyi said softly, “Do I have a sister-in-law?”
Guan Yue: “Mm.”
“Cut it out, I don’t believe it.”
Lü Dongyi and Guan Yue had known each other since university and were from the same school. Over the years, he had seen how cold and straight his senior brother was, causing many young men and women to leave disappointed.
“I might not be good at other things, but I’m definitely better at finding a partner than senior brother.” This was Lü Dongyi’s last pride.
Guan Yue didn’t answer, but his eyebrows rose slightly, glancing at Lü Dongyi.
This look made the junior brother feel a little intimidated: “You… wh… what kind of look is that?”
The man raised his eyebrows a little higher: “A look of concern.”
Lü Dongyi: “Thank you, you specifically removed two words.”
Guan Yue: “You’re welcome.”
Lü Dongyi: “…”
At noon, the sun was golden and warm.
It took away the dampness of the rainy season, adding a bit of dryness.
Pei Qi had just finished the last bit of reinforcement work, put the brush back into the pen holder, stood up, and stretched.
He was a little hungry, too lazy to go to the cafeteria and too lazy to wait for takeout.
The young man simply brewed a bowl of braised beef noodles in the tea room. Lao Jiang saw this and clicked his tongue twice: “Just eating this?”
Pei Qi slurped a mouthful of noodles and swallowed: “Just making do.”
“Come to my house for dinner tonight, your master’s wife made buns again,” Lao Jiang was always worried that his little apprentice would starve himself one day, “Eat less of this unnutritious stuff.”
“Okay.” Pei Qi smiled, his dimples appearing.
His phone “dinged” twice at this moment.
The young man checked his messages while stirring the noodles with a fork.
He noticed that the appendectomy doctor hadn’t replied.
He couldn’t help but wonder if… he was bothering him.
After all, the appendectomy doctor seemed to have told him not to bother him unless necessary.
The young man pursed his lips, praying that WeChat would soon have a function to retract messages at any time.
And that retracting messages wouldn’t send a notification.
He turned off his phone screen, sighed softly, and continued eating his noodles.
At night, the young man appeared at his master’s house as promised to clean up the food.
His master’s wife greeted him enthusiastically: “Eat more, Xiao Qi.”
“This is the fifth one, master’s wife,” Pei Qi was feeling a little full.
His master’s wife was originally from the north, and her pastry skills were top-notch. Every time she made big meat buns, Pei Qi would eat until he was full.
The woman put another plump white bun into the young man’s bowl: “Then have a vegetarian one, bamboo shoot and green bean bun.”
Pei Qi couldn’t help but burp.
The phone on the table lit up at the right moment.
The pop-up window showed.
G: [Okay.]
G: [A little busy, just got some free time.]
G: [Have you eaten?]
Seven: [Eating now.]
G: [What are you eating?]
Seven: [Big buns made by master’s wife.]
Then, Pei Qi took a picture of the big bun in his bowl.
G: [Looks delicious.]
A conversation that seemed like it could already end.
But out of courtesy, the young man also asked: [Have you eaten?]
G: [Not yet, just had an emergency.]
G: [I haven’t had buns in a long time.]
Seven: [Mm-hmm.]
After replying, the young man felt something was wrong.
He felt his reply was a bit strange.
He weakly added: [Do you want some?]
Then he felt his reply was even weirder.
It felt a little smug.
As if saying, you can’t eat any, right?
So he had to add again: [I can send you some.]
He thought Doctor Guan would definitely say no, so he just sent it.
No new messages popped up, he guessed the man had gone back to work.
So he put down his phone and bit into the soft bun.
The aroma of green beans and bamboo shoots mixed with the aroma of the dough. He hadn’t chewed for two bites when the phone screen lit up again.
G: [Okay.]
G: [A little busy, just got free time.]
G: [Have you eaten?]
G: [I haven’t had buns in a long time.]
Pei Qi’s chewing paused.
Why was it different from what he expected?
This…
He could only answer: [No problem.]
Seven: [I’ll give you a little of each filling.]
Seven: [But you’ll have to wait a while.]
G: [Is it far?]
G: [Forget it if it’s far.]
His master’s house was near his workplace, and not far from the Second Municipal Hospital.
The capybara answered honestly: [Not far, probably about ten minutes.]
G: [Okay.]
G: [Thank you.]
He casually threw an emoji, swallowed the bun, and not very honestly told his master’s wife, “Master’s wife, I want to take a few buns back to eat.”
He wasn’t very good at lying, and his ears would turn red when he lied.
Fortunately, his master’s wife and master didn’t notice, and they were busy packing for him.
Lao Jiang: “Pack more for him, so he doesn’t eat all that unnutritious stuff every day.”
Thus, the young man stepped into the hospital gate with a bag of buns.
This was his first time at the Second Municipal Hospital.
The Second Municipal Hospital was the first Class-A hospital in He City, with a long history. The expansion and renovation had just been completed this year, and it was so large that he stood dumbfounded at the gate, not knowing where to go.
He could only silently take out his phone to message the appendectomy doctor.
Seven: [Is it in the inpatient department?]
A few seconds later.
G: [Mm, 19th floor.]
G: [Take elevator 8.]
G: [Can you find it?]
The young man typed out his confusion and honesty: [I can’t.]
Immediately, a video call notification popped up.
Pei Qi was stunned for several seconds before pressing the answer button.
On the screen was Guan Yue wearing a medical mask.
The man, whose face was mostly covered by the mask, only showed his deep eyes, but his elegance was still hard to conceal.
“Where are you?”
The man’s slightly magnetic voice came from the receiver.
Hearing the voice, the young man cautiously leaned a few centimeters closer to the camera: “Here.”
