Chapter 14: Roommates and Class Placement

Ashura left the plaza rather late, and his mind kept replaying what the two deans had said.

He wanted to grow stronger and receive the guidance of the mighty, and the sight of people flying through the air had shaken him to the core…

Before he knew it he had reached the dormitory, and when he opened the door he saw three teenagers sitting on the chairs in the lounge.

The moment he came in, all three pairs of eyes swung toward him!

Ashura guessed that these three would be his future roommates, so he forced a stiff smile.

Before he could speak, a stylish boy in brocade stood up and said with a warm smile, “You must be the late-arriving roommate for Dormitory 138!”

“I hear the students who arrive on the last day all come in on special genius quotas!”

The boy’s words felt like a spring breeze, and when the other two heard the news they sized Ashura up earnestly.

Ashura’s face flushed; he rubbed his nose and said awkwardly, “No, no, I just got lucky, that’s all!”

The other three took it as modesty, and the brocade-clad youth laughed, “We share one dorm, so stop being modest!”

“We’re going to live under the same roof for 9 years, so let’s look after each other!”

“You’re all from the Valencian Empire, right? Let’s introduce ourselves; I’m Jin Ze, water-element Mage Adept Stage 3.” With that he looked at the blond boy in the chair.

Although the blond youth wore plain clothes, his bearing screamed noble pedigree, every gesture refined.

The blond boy nodded slightly to Ashura and said, “I’m Arthur, Martial Master Stage 1.”

Ashura clicked his tongue in secret; the academy really was full of prodigies!

This one had already reached the standard for the assessment 3 months from now.

The last boy, shy with a nest of messy hair, stood up and said, “I’m Angelo… call me Little Lo… I study weapon forging.”

Ashura recalled the instructor at the gate mentioning 100 non-combat majors and figured Angelo was one of them.

The three of them now looked at Ashura, waiting for his self-introduction.

Ashura straightened and said, “I’m Ashura, currently at Warrior Stage 3.”

When he finished, the other three eyed him with doubt.

He knew they were still thinking about the genius quota, and he was about to explain the entrance test to them.

But Jin Ze quickly smoothed things over. “All right, let’s help each other from now on. How old are you?”

Ashura gave his age, and the four turned out to be born in the same year though in different months.

By age Jin Ze was eldest, Arthur second, Ashura third, and Angelo fourth.

After a brief chat they ran out of topics and sat in the lounge staring at one another.

At last the cool second brother Arthur said he was going back to rest, breaking the awkward silence.

The four exchanged farewells and withdrew to their rooms.

Ashura returned to his own room and was overjoyed at the simple single bed; after 6 months of eating wind and sleeping rough, this was his first time lying on a bed since leaving home.

Lying on it, the boy suddenly felt like crying, yet he held back the tears.

He knew tears offered no help; now he could rely only on himself.

In just one day he had already met two classmates a full realm above him, and the pressure and urgency to grow stronger weighed heavily.

Lost in thought, he drifted off to sleep…

At dawn the next day, long used to early starts on the road, Ashura woke up early and loosened his limbs.

With his mind he probed his student badge, which held a brief message telling him to report to Classroom 13 in the building marked on the map.

Leaving the room, he saw Big Brother Jin Ze and Second Brother Arthur eating a simple breakfast in the downstairs cafeteria.

The academy cafeteria provided free food, but most students bought meals in advance and kept them in their packs or storage spaces for convenience.

Saving the trip to the cafeteria left more time for cultivation and greater freedom.

Guessing that Ashura had arrived too late yesterday to buy food, Jin Ze smiled and handed him a roasted-meat sandwich.

Ashura thanked him repeatedly and sat down to eat; Little Brother Angelo was still asleep, and they did not know how his major was scheduled.

After breakfast the three brothers found that their reporting classrooms differed, so they parted with a few words and headed off.

Dressed in a fitted Warrior uniform, Ashura wondered what training awaited today.

Yet the moment he reached the target building he sensed something was off.

Every student, freshman or senior, who entered or left the building wore a Magic robe, leaving him the only one in Warrior attire gaping at the doorway.

A terrifying thought hit him… had he been assigned to the Magic School?

But he had never practiced magic; starting as a mere Mage Apprentice Stage 1 was a nightmare!

He suddenly recalled the meaningful smile of the middle-aged examiner at the gate and ground his teeth.

In his heart he swore he would one day yank out that instructor’s moustache!

But what now? After a brief hesitation he clenched his teeth and strode into the venerable Magic building…

When he found Classroom 13 and stepped inside, the already empty room grew even quieter.

The 8 or 9 early arrivals stared in shock at the black-haired youth in Warrior garb.

Ignoring their looks, Ashura walked to a rear seat by the window and sat down.

The chubby boy directly in front of him recovered and turned around to ask, “Hey, did you get the wrong room? There isn’t a single Warrior class in this building.”

Ashura had no idea how to reply, so he sighed helplessly, “I wish I had, but this is where I’m supposed to report.”

The chubby boy was baffled, and the other students decided he was just odd, so they stopped paying attention.

They split into small groups to chat, and newcomers drew little notice.

Then a silver-haired girl walked in with light steps.

The crowd turned to stone a second time.

If Ashura’s oddity had stunned them, the girl’s beauty robbed them of thought altogether.

She entered calmly, and a lanky boy in an ornate mage robe instantly flashed a radiant smile.

Pulling out the chair beside him, he gestured politely and said, “Beautiful miss, please have a seat here.”

She did not even look at him and walked straight past.

The lanky boy’s face stiffened, yet all eyes still followed the girl.

Since no one noticed his embarrassment, he relaxed slightly and hurried back to his seat.

Ashura recognized the newcomer as Clara.

Realizing she was also a lightning-element magician, he understood why they shared a class.

The moment he recognized her, Clara spotted him as well; after all, his outfit was impossible to miss.

Even though he had hidden at the rear, he was anything but invisible.

Clara, too, was startled by his incongruous clothes, and remembering his antics during the entrance test, her lips curved faintly.

That smile nearly hooked the chubby boy’s soul; in his heart a single voice screamed, “The goddess actually smiled at me!”

What shocked him even more was that his goddess now walked toward him.

She finally sat diagonally behind him… Ashura’s right-hand side… separated from Ashura by only a narrow aisle.

The chubby boy froze, mind racing: “Why did she sit there? Is it so she can look at me whenever she wants?”

“How should I act normally? Does my hairstyle make my profile look better…?”

After sitting down, Clara scanned the room, then tilted her head and simply stared at Ashura without speaking.

Ashura was baffled; she had ignored him yesterday, so what was she doing now?

Still, a man should be magnanimous, so he decided to greet her.

Forcing a stiff smile, he raised his hand and dropped it again, mumbling, “Uh… long time no see.”

Such a clumsy greeting actually made the girl snort with laughter.

With a sweet smile, the silver-haired Clara said, “Idiot.”
