Chapter 23: Highest Bidder Wins

Unaware of any trouble, Ashura decided not to go to the training field today.

He thought he would spend a day attending classes at the Magic School to give his battered body a break, but before he even entered the classroom homeroom instructor Ella summoned him to her office.

Helpless, Ashura followed Instructor Ella inside, stopped in front of her, and she asked him to pull up a chair and sit.

He flatly refused and insisted on standing while she lectured him.

The truth was, when he bowed his head from that spot he could see a stretch of snowy cleavage.

Ella looked at this boy whose grin was a little roguish and wondered how to broach the subject in a way that sounded tactful.

Not wanting to wound his self-confidence, she finally forced a smile and asked, “Ashura, would you mind telling your instructor what level you are at now?”

Ashura said indifferently, “I’m currently at Mage Apprentice Stage 3 and feel I’m about to break through to Mage Adept Stage 1!”

Ella froze for a moment; she had not expected such tremendous progress in only a few days since school started and silently wished he had not fallen behind before, otherwise he would certainly have been one of the top lightning-element mages in the class.

She sensed a lively, agile mind in the boy, the kind possessed by many great and Ashura happened to have exactly that quality.

Ella then asked, “Some classmates told me you often skip class and wander around the training field; is that true?”

Ashura did not need to guess to know it was surely Kyle who tattled, and he resolved to stay away from that petty guy in the future.

He immediately admitted, “Yes, Instructor, my foundations are too weak to understand some of the lessons, so rather than waste time here I would rather hone my martial skills at the training field!”

Ella had not expected such a candid answer and secretly worried for him.

Concerned, she asked, “Ashura, is there anything your instructor can do to help you? Just tell me; I believe you can pass the assessment as long as you study wholeheartedly!”

Ashura looked at the homeroom instructor in surprise, seeing nothing but genuine sincerity in her eyes.

He then laughed and said, “I also believe I can pass the assessment! What you can do for me is simply stand on my side on the day of the test; if there’s nothing else, Instructor, I’m heading back to class!”

With that, he waved, turned around, and left for the classroom, while Ella failed to understand what his last sentence meant.

After pondering for a while and finding no clue, she simply stopped thinking about it, believing that the clever boy would get through the ordeal.

Back in the classroom, Ashura again sat beside Clara, and the girl’s unique fragrance made him take a deep sniff.

The silver-haired girl sitting next to him gave no response, but her face flushed to the tips of her ears, and the two listened to the lecture quietly without passing a single note.

However, during the morning break, Ashura’s desk was piled with challenge letters slipped in from outside, some from people who wanted to spar and level up and others from jealous rivals who wanted to duel him over Magina and Lan Yu, leaving him completely baffled.

Ashura tossed them all into the trash can and grumbled, “This is infuriating; I thought they were love letters, but every single one asks to fight me!”

Clara laughed until her eyes curved like crescent moons and said, “You’re so bad… what girl would ever write you a love letter?”

Before Ashura could retort, a chubby boy burst in from outside… the slightly narcissistic student who had sat diagonally in front of them, named Na Wei.

Soaked in sweat, he ran up to Ashura and shouted excitedly, “Ashura, I heard the two great beauties Lan Yu and Magina actually fought over you at the training field!”

“Ashura, hurry and teach me how you chase girls… how did you pull it off? You’re not even as handsome as I am…”

Na Wei kept babbling, but the silver-haired girl who had just been smiling turned her head away, pressing her quill so hard it was about to bend.

Ashura was equally puzzled… fought because of him? Weren’t they teaming up to beat him? No wonder so many challenge letters had arrived; this was pure trouble…

Ashura nervously sat through the remaining Magic classes, then bolted back to the dormitory the moment the bell rang.

In the dormitory lounge, Jin Ze and Angelo were whispering to each other while scribbling and drawing.

Ashura craned his neck for a look and discovered they were editing gossip cards for a Top-10 Beauties ranking, apparently planning to launch a tabloid venture.

He did not disturb them, went straight upstairs, lay on his bed, and thought about what to do tomorrow.

Although he had been beaten up these two days, the near-real combat sparring had benefited him immensely, and every time he went all out against the two girls who were stronger than he was, the gains were enormous.

In the end he decided to compromise with reality and go negotiate with the two girls tomorrow.

Having thought it through, he sat up and resumed meditation, sensing that his Magic level was on the verge of a breakthrough, perhaps within the next few days.

The next morning, before the first class began, Ashura arrived early at the entrance of the training field where only new students trained and waited for them.

Soon he saw Lan Yu and Magina arrive at almost the same time, and their slightly damp uniforms showed that they had both gone for early-morning training.

Indeed, the strong were disciplined and diligent; Ashura felt a little embarrassed, but remembering he had spent the whole night meditating balanced his mood.

The two girls were stunned when they saw Ashura… was this guy actually waiting for them?

They immediately sprinted over, each grabbing one of his arms and dragging him toward her own class line.

Ashura almost split apart and quickly shouted, “Stop, stop right now, you two crazy women!”

The moment he shouted, both girls let go of his arms, but before he could breathe a sigh of relief a whip-kick and a heavy punch struck him and sent him flying.

Before he could get up, two pairs of warrior shoes stomped heavily on his chest.

Ashura looked up to see the two girls still furious and ready to finish him off, so he hurriedly cried, “Stop, stop, I came to negotiate… if you kill me who will spar with you?”

Only then did the two girls withdraw their feet, still glaring coldly at Ashura as they waited for him to continue.

Ashura climbed up from the ground and, feigning elegance, brushed the dust from his clothes.

Showing a cultivated smile, he said, “I hear you both benefited greatly from sparring with me and have advanced to Martial Master Stage 2; indeed, battling the strong is the fastest way to grow!”

Both girls could not even be bothered to answer and rolled their eyes in unison.

Ashura was not embarrassed and went on, “I also heard you fought because of me yesterday; that sets a bad example, so if you both want to spar with me, please don’t ruin the harmony by fighting each other.”

“How about this: from now on you can spend credits to hire me as your sparring partner, and I’ll work with whoever offers the higher amount!”

“The credits I take are merely compensation for the injuries I suffer and my labor fee; with credits I can raise my level faster, which will make our sparring more evenly matched and help you improve more quickly under my guidance, right?”

“You two should know that someone has already offered 500 credits to spar with me, and many others are lining up for a slot; I’m sentimental, though… since I’m familiar with you and you even fought for me, my conscience can’t ignore you.”

“So, you can start bidding right now; the highest bidder wins…”
