Chapter 22: The Numbed Laborers — She Can’t Sleep Without Killing the Devils
But the laborers were already completely exhausted, collapsed on the ground—either with their eyes shut, unaware of their surroundings,
or staring blankly, their eyes following the collaborator’s whip moving unconsciously, their roots barely reliable.
Jiang Yu’s expression darkened slightly and she didn’t dare waste any more time.
Using a large truck as cover, she quickly dealt with all the collaborators with stones,
and immediately began putting the equipment into her spatial pocket.
At this moment, seeing the things in front of them suddenly vanish into thin air,
the laborers lying on the ground finally began to react.
One by one, they sat up and instinctively reached out to protect the ox carts they had been painstakingly escorting.
But just as their hands stretched out, they weakly fell back down.
There was no way around it!
They had been exhausted all day long and hadn’t had a single grain of rice to eat.
The collaborators, to better control them and prevent escape attempts, only fed them right before setting off the next day.
This also ensured they would be too weak to work.
So after Jiang Yu quickly finished collecting everything, many laborers numbingly collapsed back onto the ground.
Damn it!
This situation would soon be discovered.
If these laborers didn’t escape soon, they might become the targets of the devils’ venting of anger.
What to do?
Jiang Yu thought for a moment and quickly took several large bowls of steamed buns and pancakes out of her space.
“Get up! Take this food and leave quickly. When the devils come, you won’t be able to run.”
“Food…”
“Ah—”
Smelling the food’s aroma, the laborers, who had been barely alive moments before, became like zombies smelling blood,
unconsciously growling and scrambling to the bowls, grabbing the food and stuffing it desperately into their mouths.
“Slow down…”
Watching them crazily devour food like wild dogs, Jiang Yu’s anger flared up like a roaring fire.
Damn it!
How hungry do you have to be to starve living humans into looking like half-ghosts, half-monsters?
Damn Japanese devils!
What right do they have? What right do they have to treat laborers like livestock?
No! At least livestock get fed enough.
Thinking of the cows she had taken into her space along with the carts,
Jiang Yu’s hatred almost took a solid form in her heart.
She wished she could immediately turn around and mercilessly kill all the devils right now.
Suddenly—
“Ugh ugh ugh…”
A few laborers were choking from eating too fast, nearly turning pale, but still desperately stuffing food into their mouths.
Jiang Yu hurriedly took out water and revealed herself, quickly patting a few backs to help them cough.
After seeing them swallow the food down, Jiang Yu urged again:
“Eat slowly! Listen, take the food and leave quickly…”
“Leave? Where could we go? We’d just be caught again soon…”
The laborers, whose minds were full of food after Jiang Yu’s sudden appearance, had little reaction.
Only one tall, emaciated laborer whose face was hard to make out answered numbly.
“Well then, why don’t you join the army!”
Finally! A response.
Jiang Yu looked at him joyfully, thinking of Zhao Changyun and the others who must be close to Dahuzhuang.
She sincerely suggested:
“Join the army? If you’re worried about being caught, then become soldiers.
When the Japanese devils come to capture you, you can kill them with guns…”
“But where could we join the army?”
The laborers, finally starting to think clearly after eating, looked confused as they murmured.
“Go out, take the main road, and head toward Chenwu Town. You’ll soon meet Commander Zhao Changyun and his group.
You can join them and then link up with the 66th Army at Jurong. Once you have weapons,
you can fight the Japanese devils hard and take revenge for yourselves…”
“Weapons… revenge… join the army…”
“Yes! Join the army, get trained, then with weapons, you won’t be any worse than those devils.
Then you can kill all the devils and get your revenge…”
“Revenge… yes! We want revenge, damn Japanese devils, ugh…”
“Revenge…”
“Kill the Japanese devils…”
Jiang Yu’s words were like a splash of cold water, finally waking the numb laborers up bit by bit.
One after another, crying and laughing, they quickly grabbed some buns and pancakes and crazily ran toward the village exit.
Jiang Yu said nothing more, just disappeared again, ran ahead of them, and helped clear out a few collaborators guarding the gate.
After watching them leave safely, she turned back into the village.
Actually, according to the plan, she should have left with those laborers.
After all, the village was no longer safe.
But thinking of all she had seen earlier, Jiang Yu felt she had to kill a few more devils.
Otherwise, she would probably not be able to sleep peacefully for a long time.
So after vomiting, she quickly returned to the village, climbed a tall tree outside the Jiang family’s courtyard,
and patiently started shooting stones at passing devils.
Especially targeting those who shouted orders and gave commands—
clearly the devils’ officers.
Though she couldn’t tell exactly what rank they held,
she didn’t care. Better to mistakenly kill one than let any get away.
After all, those guys were still devils.
Unfortunately,
she had barely hunted down a few before the rest of the devils began to panic.
They caused such a ruckus that they immediately alerted the devils inside the Jiang courtyard.
Jiang Yu, who was ready to leave, saw several devils surrounded like stars around the moon coming out to investigate.
She quickly took a thick door panel from her spatial pocket and used it as a shield.
Then she shot more stones.
Suddenly!
“Protect the lord…”
“Baka—”
“Bang bang bang…”
Hearing the chaos and the burst of gunfire below, Jiang Yu hid behind the panel and waited for the shots to subside.
She then expertly climbed down the tree.
Dodging the nervous devils and collaborators holding guns, she slipped into a nearby courtyard.
“Stop! Stop right there!”
“The truck, the truck, lord…”
“Baka! Shut up… wait, what’s going on? Where’s the truck? Where are those Chinese pigs?”
“Baka! Those Chinese pigs must have stolen our supplies, chase after them!”
“Yes!”
Thunk—
Very satisfying!
She had just taken out two more ordering devils.
Without looking at the results after shooting stones from her hiding place, Jiang Yu immediately turned and darted into an alley behind the courtyard.
“Bang bang bang…”
“Who’s there? Come out, coward, only good at ambushes…”
“Come out! If you sincerely surrender, the lord will pardon you…”
…
Listening to gunfire and the collaborators’ nonsense behind her, Jiang Yu turned a corner
and quickly slipped out of another alley near the noise.
Seeing the collaborators still frothing at the mouth and struggling, she threw a stone at each of them.
Then the world was filled only with the devils’ gunfire…
