“What’s going on?!”
“Where are Mom and Dad?!”
After Su Ze and Zhou Wanwan woke up, they found the house empty, and they almost fainted in shock.
Luckily, due to their usual biological clock, the couple, still half-dazed, sensed something was wrong and quickly got up, realizing they had almost overslept.
The couple quickly dressed and rushed out of the room, only to find that their parents’ door was still tightly shut, which struck them as odd.
One of them hurried to wake up the parents, while the other rushed to the kitchen to start the fire and prepare breakfast.
However…
“Su Ze, there’s porridge, steamed buns, and eggs in the pot.”
Zhou Wanwan entered and found the prepared breakfast but didn’t see her in-laws. She quickly came out and said.
“Dad, Mom, it’s almost time to go to work.”
Su Ze had already called several times, but there was complete silence from inside, no response whatsoever.
Something was wrong.
Something was definitely off.
Zhou Wanwan and Su Ze looked at each other, not understanding why the old couple wasn’t at home. It seemed like even the two sons weren’t around either?! They both began to feel uneasy.
“Dad, Mom…”
“What are you shouting for? We’re out for a walk.”
“Have you eaten breakfast? We’re all done, just waiting for you.”
To their surprise, just as Su Ze called out “Dad, Mom,” they heard two helpless voices from behind him.
“Dad, Dad, Mom, Mom.”
“Mom, Dad.”
Dabao and Xiaobao, each holding a small piece of steamed bun, eating while holding their grandparents’ hands, tilted their heads and looked at their anxious parents, also calling out in their soft, baby voices.
Who else could it be if not Su Huaiyuan and Qiao Jiuru?!
They both looked so leisurely, as if they had just returned from a stroll.
Su Ze and Zhou Wanwan: “……”
The couple immediately went to wash up, then quickly had breakfast, or they would be really late.
Meanwhile, Su Huaiyuan and Qiao Jiuru both sighed in relief.
They had just arrived and almost missed it.
Soon, the family set off together to work.
“In a few days, I want to get someone to make a pushcart bed for Dabao and Xiaobao. That way, they can play on it and also sleep on it. We won’t need to constantly keep an eye on them.”
Qiao Jiuru had been thinking about this for a while.
However, one reason was that everyone was busy with the spring plowing and planting, so there was no time for carpentry. The other reason was that they didn’t want to attract too much attention since they had just arrived.
But, low-key was the way to go. It was the same as making money quietly.
“You tell me, what kind of design do you have in mind? It’s best if we make it ourselves from wood. If we hire someone, some people might have thoughts and opinions. Who knows, they might even report us.”
Su Huaiyuan thought for a moment, shook his head, and believed it was definitely not a good idea to hire someone. It was better to do it themselves so no one could gossip.
After hearing her husband’s words, Qiao Jiuru thought for a moment and realized that indeed, as long as it allowed the children to play and sleep, it didn’t need to be too neat or precise. Sometimes, having things too perfect could be a disadvantage.
“I’ll tell you, this pushcart bed is like this…”
She described to her husband the baby carriages and cribs she had seen in her past life, using her hands to illustrate.
For someone like Su Huaiyuan, a senior professor, making a wooden pushcart bed was like child’s play.
Sure enough, after hearing her, Su Huaiyuan nodded without hesitation. He could do it himself.
Su Ze, who was listening attentively, also had sparkling eyes. He could do it too.
“Mom, Dad and I will do it. It’ll be ready in no time.”
Su Ze was confident. He thought this wooden cart was a small task, and he could easily make it himself.
“Alright, then I’ll leave it to you two,” said Qiao Jiuru.
At noon, on their way back from work, when they passed by Uncle Jiu’s house, Qiao Jiuru, holding Dabao and Xiaobao’s hands, didn’t go directly home like usual.
Instead, she walked toward Uncle Jiu’s house.
By now, most of the crops had already been planted, and the remaining ones could still be rushed. Uncle Jiu was spending less time in the fields, so he should be at home.
“Uncle Jiu.”
“Uncle.”
“Uncle.”
Dabao and Xiaobao obediently followed their grandmother’s greeting and cutely waved their little hands at Uncle Jiu.
Uncle Jiu, who was sorting the medicine cabinet, heard their voices and immediately put down what he was doing and rushed out to greet them.
“Dabao, Xiaobao, you’re here! Uncle will give you some candy, alright?!”
Uncle Jiu always carried some candies with him.
While speaking, he took some out and handed them to Dabao and Xiaobao.
Dabao and Xiaobao smiled so wide their eyes became slits, their little hands tightly clutching the candy Uncle Jiu gave them.
“Uncle Jiu, I came to find you for two things.”
